Had McMinn Birmingham Hip Resurface Jan 2004.Private patient. Although recovery was slower than anticipated (gym fanatic) I have not had any real problems other than stiff/or tight muscles which I put down mainly to my exercise regime. 2010 had the other hip resurfaced, same hosp.same consultant/surgeon etc. All fine infact seemed easier this time. Returned to the gym 5 months later - all has been well until recently when I was standing on one leg (new hip) and bent down it makes a noise like a creaking door! Does not hurt me, although I do get tight around top of thigh and need to stretch this leg out more etc. Noise is really loud everyone around/near in gym could hear the sound? Any one have ideas on this?

Had first McMinn Birmingham Hip resurface Jan2004. Felt like i had a bolt in side of buttock, but all has been well with it, I am a regular gym user ie body pump/LBT etc. 2010 I went in for my other hip to be resurfaced, Private Med cover so same consultant/surgeon etc. This time is all felt easier, 5 months off gym then returned in the Nov - all has been fine until a few weeks ago. Was balancing on one leg as I bent knee and went down my new hip made a perculiar noise "creaking door sound" everyone nearby could hear it and asked me if it was my hip, it does not sound like metal and it didnt hurt, it sometimes still makes that sound to everyones amusement - should I be worried! has anyone got any idea what it could be and why! Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. June last had a yearly check up + xray hip joint showed as ok.

If you have been experiencing burning pain, rashes, and other symptoms, you could be experiencing infection or other problems. If you have had metal on metal implants then the risk for metallosis is high. Metal debris often lodges on the surrounding tissues and cause inflammation. it is now five years since I had the Birmingham hip replacement done,at first my recovery was excellent but after two years I started getting this strange stiffness around my hip area but very much inside my body it has never felt just like muscle ache it is strange to describe but it has got worse and is extremely painful, I have had an xray and the joint is still nicely in place, my consultant thinks it could be an allergy to the Titanium coating but is not really offering any solutions, i have had quite a weight gain where it is becoming impossible to lose a 1lb and it feels as if there is a link. I manage to walk my dogs everyday and have avery active lifestyle but nobody seems to understand the wall of pain that I go through to be active. The stiffness feels that it is spreading through my body I can barely get out of bed or up from a chair, I am turning a young 55 in Sept but certaily do not class myself as old. Would like to hear if anyone else has suffered these side effects.
I had a right Birmingham hip in 2008 in february 2010 iwas in agony with my back my stomache and my left hip. I was in bed one night and I woke up so quickly as I felt as if something had dropped of my BHip. I take ages to get up in the morning I go the gym and swim, but the pain is always there in my left hip. The pain has gone right across my abdomen and is now in my left hip. I am in pain as soon as I get into to bed I do not sleep and I am up peeing every 2 hours. I can't turn over in bed as the pain is so bad, seems to be better when I am standing, but have to wait for things to settle. I have had bloods, xrays, mri scans which I thort would sort the problem out, was absolutely useless. I struggle to even clean my own bed room but I struggle on as I car for my mother. I have also had scans on uterus, kidneys, ovaries, bladder,+. I am at my wits end as now all they can do is send me to a pain clinic???? My quality of life is low as I can't walk for long, can't ride my bike, my sex life has gone down the drain and I am always tired. My surgeon cleared off, he said he had to keep an eye on me for the nxt 5 years (that was in 2010), never seen sight nor hair of him since. I get to see a orthopedic on the 10th. Yippee!I am also really really stiff around my hip area. I know what you are going thru and can't shift this weight. Also i get the same feeling thru my body sometimes I can't move. I hope you find your solution and soon. Best of luck.

Two days ago I had the same noise develop . I had a BHR 4 years ago and also have had no serious issues yet . I'm active in sports gym and very heavy use in activity level and weight as a carpenter setting concrete forms . My squeaky noise is in the same range of motion , from a squat to upright or climbing ladders or stairs .Very audible even at 50 -60 feet away , but with no pain . Mine did start however the day after I fell off of a ladder at work , landing on my rear end ,and we wonder if it is due to swelling or muscular misalignment in the joint area . I will be seeing my doctor in 2 days for evaluation and update if there is any help there .

its really interesting that some of you have said about weight gain, i have found it impossible to lose weight and seem to be gaining all the time but it does not feel right as I am careful about what i eat and busy all the time and fairly fit, i have had this strange stiffness inside my hip and feel it is getting worse i also suffer from regular headaches as well as strange sensations in my ears and head, they just get dismissed all the time by the doctors, i now have very bad anxiety as a result, i have just been sent a letter from my consultant who is offering blood tests for anyone with birmingham resurfacing.

i had a partial birmingham hip & partial replacement just over 6 years ago when i was 33 since then i have been in constant pain ,i walk with a limp,i have lost alot of movement that i had before the op,my hip is now swollen down the outside of my leg & is easily noticable through my clothes,i cannot bear anyone to touch my hip as the sensation is awfull & i keep getting thumping headaches i have had 1 blood test 2yrs ago but was never told the results i am due back next month not that it helps it seems my pain is the least important thing!!I think the problem is not just with the DePuy metal implants but with them all

a close relation of mine has had two BH full hip replacements. Immediate result fine.Thereafter periodic stiffness and aches and poains in the hips,She has Diabetes 2 but this may be nothing to do with m on m replacements. Blood tests show elevated cobalt and chromium levels but who knows what is acceptable level?Impossible to replace prostheses beacuse uncemented and would cause massive problems. Surgeon unwilling to communicate. Anybody with similar experience?

I had a birmingham hip resurfacing done in 2003. Totally changed my life in that I was able to do lots of things that were impossible before. No problems until recently so am going for a blood test next week. Feel so tired all the time; menopausal problems seemed to have returned with a vengeance; can't lose weight at all; headaches quite a lot; backache and general aches and pains. I just feel like my body isn't my own any more. I am really young at heart and want to do things but the body isn't willing.

Am contimplaiting Birmingham Hip Resurfacing , am 65years of age and have a little arthritis in my hip that causes me to limp and have occasional pain.So far the advice from friends has been ,I am to old for BHR , rather have full hip replacement.
Am I to old ? and do they make non-metal , perhaps ceramic BHR's ?
It seems so much less invasive to have BHR rather then have the head of a perfectly good femur cut off and a metal rod shoved into it

Hi folks, I had the Birmingham Hip resurfacing done five & a half years ago and it has given me my life back. I have had zero pain or problems but the last couple of autumns I have too noticed that it occasionally squeaks. I asked my surgeon and he immediately took ex-rays. Everything looked perfect and because there is no pain associated with the squeaking we decided to just monitor it and not worry too much about it. He told me he is not sure why it only does it at certain times of the year but there is no deterioration that we can see either in the bones or the prosthetic. Therefore as I said we are just going to watch it. Weird stuff hey?

following my experience with the BHR.. a total fiasco, i wouldn't recommend to to anyone. Why select a prosthesis which seems to be causing so many problems? DePuy recalled their product, its probable only a matter of time til something similar is done by Birmingham.

How many devices are there to choose from with BHR? Could any of the problems be with the surgeon's experience, or have you--all of you--gone to a doc that has done a thousand or more?(that was what was recommended to me)

Had a Birmingham replacement 5 years ago and had to have an MRI scan last year as was suffering from pins and needle type sensation down my thigh. Have had n o other adverse side effects or symptons since the intial op and regular blood tests showed nothing.3 months on and today I saw my Specialist and he told me I have pockets of fluid around the sight of the hip which may be causing this. He then tells me to have another scan in 3 months time to see if it's got worse. I asked him what has caused it and he couldn't answer me......I do reguklar exercises which my Physiotherapist recommended and I do have a fairly manual job as a gardener/builder. If the problem hasn't changed he says I weill 99% sure have to have another op. They had to remove quite a moajor amount of my thigh bone due to arthritus so I will be unable to work again if this happens. Has anybody else had these problems or symptons and if so what was the outcome. Thanks

worse thing i ever did was to get Birmingham hip,(2009) i,ve been in constant pain since, i've had it revised to a THR ceramic 2 yrs ago with no improvement in pain levels, recently has a psoas tendon release to no avail. I'm desperate now, unable to tolerate any exercise, cannot walk any distance despite a lot of pain meds. I've been off work for 6 months. 1 surgeon has said implant is impinging, 3 other surgeons disagree. I dont know where to turn to get my life back
