My dad had 2 hip replacements within the past few months. First R hip was February 2012, second L hip August, 2012. He had Dr. Alexiades both times. To soon to give results of second but first is great. most importantly he is a wonderful doctor with a great personality. Don't hesitate about going to him or HSS. Best doctors and best caring staff at hospital for Special Surgery. You only know that from personal experience.

I've been living with AVN --Avascular Necrosis- for 19 (yes) 19 years. And my walk has been lopsided for most of them. Pain has just become a day to day for me as you can imagine.

I've scheduled and put off and scheduled and put surgery. But now it's time. I've been thinking about using Dr. Alexiades at HSS or Dr. Thomas Brown at UVA (heard many great things about him).

I was wondering if anyone recently has a replacement done at HSS with Dr. Alexiades

I had bilateral THR in 2006 and unfortunately had the DePuy ASR devices implanted. I never had any relief and was in pain for years until I found out why. My Chromium and cobalt levels were very high and the surgeon said the left one appeared loose on X-ray. He wanted to do a revision ASAP which I did in 2010. That surgery had many complications and I suffer even more now. I've tried everything, PT, pain management, acupucture etc. nothing helps and no Dr seems to be able to help me. I do not want to return to my original Ortho doc (long story) but since I'm involved in the lawsuit it seems hard to find a new Dr. willing to see me. I'm thinking of traveling to NYC to HSS so can anyone recommend a Dr that would specialize in a problem case such as mine. Thank you for any help

Hey Marve,,

it's been over a year and I'm doing well. Actually my youngest brother is a HSS right now after having DOUBLE hip replacement on Tuesday!! Imagine! It really is genetics in my case.
I'm actually ready to do my other hip. Dr. Alexiades is the only doctor at that hospital that does the anterior approach. Good luck to your mom!

Hi, I had a hip resurfacing with Dr Su at HSS almost 5 years ago. I've been completely problem-free; don't even know that it's there! Full range of motion, no discomfort, and I never give it a second thought (except at airports). I can't speak to the other doctors you listed, but Dr Su has uniformly great reviews and I can personally attest to great results.(Regarding earlier comments on a bad resurfacing outcome, from what I've read it seems the Depuy implant is problematic, and the Birmingham implant--which I have--has had a very low problem rate.

Has anyone used Dr. Friedich Boettner at HSS in New York for total hip replacement. If so were you happy with your results? I want to have my surgery there but I must have a Doctor that takes my insurance. I have noticed that many of the very well known surgeons at HSS do not take any health insurance.Do you feel that a less know surgeon at HSS is still a very good choice for a hip surgeon because of the reputation and ranking of HSS?

I too am looking for a doctor who has had a success rate with the revision THR. I have the recalled DePuy hip since 2009. I am in constant pain and my cobalt level is 15. My original surgeon doesn't feel I am ready for revision because he has only do e 3 revisions with zero success rate. I don't feel anyone cares about my pain and yet the cobalt just keeps I creasing. Can anyone recommend a doctor who can help me??

Dr Douglas Unis has been doing the anterior hip replacement surgery for the longest in NYC, since 2005. He is also the one teaching it in nyc and to surgeons from as far away as Australia. He's at mt. Sinai/Roosevelt.

I'm scheduled for a bhr w/doctor Su 1/24. Can not sleep, eat, lost 10 lbs last 8 days.
I was so scared when I read NHS in Britain is banning all metal on metal implants.
But not in the US (NHS-Britian health system)
I wanted all ceramic but scared of little time outr and Doctor Su doesn't do ceramic.
I have read an amazing amount and Doctor Su's success rate at 7 years out is the same as Doctor McMinn (inventor of BHR) but the average w/other surgeons is much lower.
I am literally scared out of my mind.

I am considering a total hip replacement with dr Seth jersbek at HSS. I have congenital hip dysplasia with a 3/4 inch leg length discrepancy. I would also have the leg lengthened as part of the surgery.
Has anyone done this.? What were the results? I am very scared. Been suffering with hip pain and sciatica for years

I am so lucky that my friend recommended to me to an excellent surgeon for anterior hip replacement surgery! She had her hip done by Dr. Nakul Karkare using anterior hip technique. Apparently this is a surgery that results in much less rehab time and no muscle cutting. The problem is that there aren't very many orthopedic surgeons that know how to do it. Even the ones that have specialized in joint replacement don't do this kind of surgery.
I am very happy with my hip replacement surgery by Dr. Karkare. I went straight home after the surgery not to a rehab facility. I have no pain now and I had amazing flexibility right after the surgery. I am not limping anymore.
This doctor was at Hospital for Special Surgery in the city and I feel he is simply the best! Google him and you should find his number. I got my surgery done in long island because I hate the drive to the city.
