I had total hip replacement May of 2006. It used to squeak ocassionally but now it is 15-20 times a day and is quite loud. I am almost 60 and do not relish the idea of having my side opened up again. I went to my orthopedic surgeon in Dec and he said it was fine, after looking at new x-rays. It makes me feel very insecure about this and wonder if something is really wrong. I don't like to feel if I am being brushed off. What to people suggest. Mine is a titanium appliance.

It's very reassuring that a positive direction in hip replacement surgery is taken- the anterior approach through a minimal incision is a definite advance. Be very aware, however, that it is not the immediate post operative recovery that is important but the long term survival of the implant. What implant should be chosen? What is its proven performance and survival over 15 years or more? We cannot know this about new technology for sure. What is the composition of its bearing surfaces (which WILL wear) and what are the likely and possible effects of this wear and their products over a long period of time in the body? These are the issues of most paramount importance in hip replacement surgery today.Think about it and talk very directly to your surgeon about these issues before making the final decision to proceed. A lot depends on this!

Hello - I also had a hip replacement 4 years ago with great success. Ceramic on ceramic, a few weeks ago I began to hear a high, think squeak now and then, when all my weight is on that leg. The noise is getting to be more pronounced, and more often. Am seeing a surgeon in 2 months. Have been assured meanwhile that it is not dangerous, but does happen rarely. I am concerned that it will continue to increase.

I had both my hips replaced under the NHS in Basingstoke in 2005, the first in March and the second in July. Both are steel on steel. Yesterday to my surprise and embarassment, I discovered my right hip squeaked intermittantly, but quite noticably to all around me, when walking. I have no discomfort in either hip. I've not yet managed to speak to my consultant about it . Today I am taking it easy but I'm very concerned that if I do any strenuous work, the squeak will worsen. As I'm 56 and currently renovating a house in Southern France, this is most frustrating. Any suggestions as to what I should or shouldn't do would be much appreciated
I think 3 in 1 should do it! Terrie may have a good contact for you

Hi Neil, I had my Hip replaced 5 years ago and I hear a crakling sound while I do exercise, also I have a little pain coming up since I work out. I'm not keen to see a Dr. since you never get a answer which will put your mind on ease. My advise to you is just work out a little every day and dont get in to onother OP befor you really need it.I'm just doing the same I recoment for yoy. Take care

Well I just see what happens to you, same here, but everybody tells me to work out and never stop. I only hear the noise while I excercise, well it is disturbing and I feel little stressy too.
But before I face another OP I rather work out less and take it easy. There is no loud sound until now. Take care please Ursula

Mine does the same. About 3 years after surgery now and squeak/vibration has occured 2 times just in the past week. I was advised by my surgeon to expect it. Hip ball and socket are ceramic.

Try taking a look at www.defectivejoints.com . There is a bunch of information on here in regard to fda recalls on joint implants, revision surgeries, and if a person might have a case with a faulty product.

Look how long this topic has been discussed and how many people have been affected by these defective ceramic artificial hips.

I hope someone can start posting information about successful lawsuits. The manufacturers sure don't want to talk to me about their squeaky parts.

Hi Fellow Squeakers!!
I'm Kristin and I haven't posted anything for over a year!! It's really disheartening to see the number of people who continue to have issues with bad hips!
To give a little of my own background with hip issues; I'm 38 yrs old and have had 8 surgeries on my right hip. I've had the right hip replaced 4 times!! My 1st & 2nd replacements were Stryker products and those failed miserably!! I did seek advice from a lawyer regarding possible legal action against Stryker, but unfortunately, without hardcore proof - the actual hip replacement hardware, MD transcripts, labs, radiographs, etc - supporting the evidence that Stryker is in fact responsible for the failures, there is almost no hope for winning. It's heartbreaking!! For the 3 years we went thru all of my surgeries - the money we lost, the time with my family, medical expenses - the damage it did is countless and it just doesn't seem to stop. My lawyer said that huge companies like Stryker have tons of money and all the time in the world to fight lawsuits, both of which most regular people do not have.
My husband will frequently search the web to see if anything new has come out about the Stryker implants and he recently found something very interesting. I don't know if anyone has seen this or not, but a MD in Law Vegas, Todd Swanson, reported on a research study he had done on ceramic on ceramic hip replacment. If you google "squeaky hip", you should see a link to his study. I'm including links, that he suggested in his article, for further info regarding hip problems.
"Based on the findings of this study, the authors recommend against using the Stryker Trident cup with the Accolade stem. More information on the study can be found at http://www.minitotalhip.com/webpages/squeakyc... ... and http://www.minitotalhip.com/webpages/aaossque... ... "
Just more info if you're interested. I truly hope people find relief from their hip problems. I have been there and it is an absolutely horrible way to live. It has taken me 2 years of very hard work, including outpatient detox from 3 years of pain meds, to get to a place in my life where I'm "living" again. My hip problems continue to be something I deal with all the time, but the issues are different and things are better. I'll keep my eye out for more info.

Anyone out there with an all metal hip replacement that squeaks? I'm 2 years into my THR and have developed a squeak...no pain.

My surgeon says he has never had a patient with an all metal hip squeak...and he has used metal for several years and has done thousands of hip replacments.

Options he gave me were surgery to put in a plastic cup...which would take care of the squeak but wouldn't last as long as metal. Also said to try walking with different strides or with my toe pointed more outward to see if that changed the squeak.

I've recently lost about 40 lbs...we talked abou how that has changed how I walk and maybe even my muscle tone in the hip. He thought that for some reason the "film" that the body forms to lubricate the joint is gone.

He didn't have an answer and basically told me to keep my next appointment in 2 years or to let him know if I want to try surgery.

I was hoping that there might be some sort of specific muscle toning that help or that he would know of some sort of supplement that seems to help with these joints.

Just don't know what to think...prior to, I was walking with a cane and in so much pain...the surgery was the best thing I did to improve my life and health...I thought.

I am 48 years old.I had a total left hip replacement about 7 years ago. It is a completely titanium hip, metal on metal. Before the replacement I lived an extremely active, athletic life, and told mom orthopod that I was going to continue this lifestyle after the replacement, hence we decided on titanium. About a year after the surgery I started to squeak. Now I squeak all the time with every step I take. It is EMBARASSING!! I have done every hip exercise known to man, I had the hip injected with synvisc to see if that would help and nothing has! The only thing that helps is taking off a couple of months of not running, or doing any leg work for my legs. I am in the process now of trying to cut as much body fat as possible to see if that helps, and I started to take glucosamine/chondroitin. I feel very discouraged at times and wish this damn sound would go away.

Eric, you talking about being active made me realize that my titanium hip started squeaking this spring...when I became more active. My main form of additional excercise is just walking, but I do quite a bit of that.

I've lost the weight and thought that might have reduced the fluid in my body enough to create the squeek.

One day this week my legs felt tight and my ankle was puffy...not normal for me...but, the hip did not make even a peep that day. Thus, extra fluid build up for some reason.

I've thought about trying the glucosamine to see if that helps. That will be my next plan of action.
