Am scheduled for surgery after many years of continuous pain and major discomfort. No meds work past 1week of starting. This includes Aciphex and there is another new one that did nothing. Took ZEIGRED when it was a prescription and now it is OTC. I take about 4 a day which is rediculous. Even water hurts going down. Heard you can no longer burp. Is that true once you have had the surgery?? Bloating is supposed to be bad also. AM I MAKING A MAJOR MISTAKE IN HAVING THE SURGERY??? SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANKS!! I am 67 years old, if that helps.

Hi Susan,
I went through the surgery in Feb, 2012, I am doing good after good and bad days recovering.
After all the discomfort I had before and now, it was worth it. I had no quality of life although I did not take meds like you are describing but suffered, hardly ate and spent a lot of time in bed.
I now am back at work, I can't eat big meals lost about 50lbs, I am better off.
My advice you need to map out your plan of care, meds for pain(liquid pain medication, you can't take pills as you are healing internally), a lot of doctors make the mistake of prescribing pill form but it is not good for the healing process.
The other is the liquid diet, no solids for 2 months, you must follow this or will not heal properly.
Please let me know if you need any other advice.
I don't say I am an expert but I went through open surgery and not the usual but survived it all so you can do it.
Good Luck,
Norma

Hi All, i'm 39, and last year i was diagnosed with Hiatal Hernia, back in september i started to have chest pain and back pain, went to my doctor and did blood test and an Ultrasound where they found a gallbladder stone and i was told the stone was the cause of all the pain, i was given some meds and after a few days the pain stopped but then after a week the chest and back pain came back, i've had chest and back pain for almost 2 weeks, and told my doctor that i was afraid of having esophageal cancer, he told me not to worry and put me on Omeprazole and Sucralfate, all that pain kind of eases when i sleep on my side, i suffer from anxiety and all that cancer thoughts are killing me!!,
am i alone!
Thanks

Hi Louis.

You have to take it one day at a time . As you suffer less pain this means that your medicine is working . Did you have an endoscopy to diagnose your hernia as they usual do biopsies for cancer and your consultant can see if you have cancer of the oesphagus. You are more at risk if you have barretts. I advise you to do meditation before you sleep and don't think too much by clearing your mind. I lit candles which I found quite soothing in the dark. Your scared of having cancer because you are scared of dying . I think you have to come to an acceptance that dying is part and parcel of life and you won't have much of one if you are afraid. Hernias aren't life threatening but are worse when you are always tense . Try to take some deep breaths and relax .

Hi Anita,
I haven't done an endoscopy yet, my doc said that my anxiety could be aggravating the pain and insists that i have no cancer, i've been driving my wife crazy with all these cancer thoughts,
Anita, thanks so much for your reply, i'll take your advice :)

Hi Denise....I too have been having severe abdominal and back pain for past 11 months. I have been diagnosed with a large hiatal hernia and am supposed to be seeing a surgeon later this week. My primary dr. doesn't think the back pain is related.(I do) I feel as if the muscles that support my stomach are straining my back muscles. I'm afraid to have surgery...esp if it will not stop the back pain. I hope all goes well with your surgery...if that is what you choose to do. I will decide what to do after speaking with surgeon. Good Luck.
Deb, I agree that back pain is a part of the symptoms of my large hiatal hernia. Two thirds of my stomach is above my diaphram, and when things act up, the pain is between my shoulders. Why in the world wouldn't you have back pain with things inside all pulled in the wrong direction? I also, occasionally, have a torqueing of my esophogus - very painful! I am getting ready to talk to my doctor about having it repaired. I have had this since birth, but as I age (I'm 64), it seems to get worse. Good luck to you and Denise.

HI nana
you need to find a surgeon who is experienced in bariatric surgery They are experienced in putting on weight loss bands. Many over weight people have hernias which are repaired at the same time.
If your hernia is only recent it may take 4 to 6 months for it to settle down and heal. Don't do any lifting at all. Eat small meals and bland meeals but more frequently and to take proton pump inhibitors if necessary. Surgery is only necessary if your hernia is really large or you suffer acid reflux. With time it may become more manageable.
Hope this helps.

I was also diagnosed with a hiatal hernia last spring and I don't have pain. But i do get problems with feeling like I can't catch my breath. It's so scary and really annoying. It only does that when its acting up. Ugh! Does anyone else suffer from this?

I am having the surgery this coming Thursday. I hope it works as I have so many problems. Have had hiatal hernia for 15 years. My surgeon is a thoracic surgeon. I was shocked when he said he had to first take my stomach out of my chest. Good luck to all of you and I sure hope this works. I also have 3 ulcers in my esophogus and lose my voice very quickly when talking because of the acid burns on my vocal cords.1633

I have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, but am showing symptoms of pancreatitis. I'm really worried. 2 doctors did xrays and said it was the hernia. I have severe back pain under my left shoulder blade, I have horrible chest pains and its difficult for me to eat, drink, and breathe, and now I am starting to feel like my jaw (below my chin) is swelling and I'm feeling slight discomfort. Has anyone else felt this under their chin? It's beginning to feel like under my tongue is swelling also. It's strange. Any thoughts?

I started having really bad stomach pains, have been in the ER several times, they said it was stress, I was sent to the cardiologist, everything was OK. 2 years ago I had an Endoscopy and Colonospy done, the results were only a small hiatal hernia and diagnosed and treated for H pyloris twice. After almost three years of intensive pains and lots of meds, (a burning feeling, like my stomach is on fire, vomiting, back pain, acid reflux, unable to eat a lot of foods, a big bulge in the upper stomach between the ribs and pain in the upper left side under the rib cage and lately breathing problems and choking and coughing)finally I was sent to have an X-Ray and Barium Swallow which came up with a diagnosis of large hiatal hernia and was recommended for surgery and sent to see a surgeon on 1/11/13, I am concerned about the possible effects after the surgery but I really can live like this anymore.

Hi Alma,
I read your post and it felt like I was reading my own story more or less.
I have had my surgery and went through a lot in my recovery and would like to discuss this procedure with you before you have the surgery so you can prepare yourself and have minimal discomfort.
I am doing as good as can be expected, I still have some reflux but have learned to eat smaller meals, and plan meals a whole lot more different than how I did before my surgery.
One thing I will say, I did lose a lot of surgery but a lot of it was swelling around the mid section due to the bulge.
Could you let me know who is doing your surgery?
I had mine done at USC with Dr Katkhouda, who pioneered the first Hiatial hernia surgery in France.
Please let me know if I can be of any help to you.

Hi,
I had surgery 81/2 weeks ago all of my symptoms are gone. I am still pretty tender and sore but able to eat.
The surgeon I used is in Southern California and he is great.
The only thing I can suggest is to make sure you find the right doctor and ask questions before undertaking the surgery.
Hi Norma, I have had an H. H. for years over the last few year with a ton of test the doctors always say the same thing it's a very LARGE hiatal hernia and they don't want to operate. One dr.(excellent reputation ) said he would love to do the surgery if he thought it would help but he dosen't want to put me thru it because he dosen't think it will. A month ago I had another dr. do an endoscopy again large hernia but he won't operate i'm on Dexilant twice a day since nov.my regular dr. gave me until jan.17th when i see him he said if it isn't working he wants me to see a surgeon he thinks will help me in the mean time they say i have IBS from all of this so i am on meds. for that as well as almost always feeling sick to my stomach and the pill for that even a third of a pill makes me just want to sleep. I'm happy at least one person feels better. I live in fla. between orlando and tampa there are a lot of great drs. but i just about have had it !! Happy New Year !!! Pat

Hi Pat,
I am sorry to hear about what you have been through believe me when when my symptoms started up, I thought it was because I was eating in a hurry, skipping meals, etc, it took slowing down work wise to finally realize I had a problem going on.
My H H was so huge it had protruded and pushed my stomach out of place, my surgery lasted 6 1/2 hours, the doctor said it was a mess.
I am telling you if you have a good surgeon and this one invented the technique he uses, he will tell you he can or can't do it.
Of course I had to have a lot of testing before I could even go through surgery.
I am doing fine now compared to almost a year ago.
Good Luck, Happy Holidays and keep me posted.

I just had the hiatal hernia repair on Dec 10th. Mine was the size of a grapefruit and the diameter of the whole from the esopho into the stomach was about 3 1/2 inches wide. over 1/3 of my stomach was inside out.
I feel awesome now. They did laproscopy - I was back to work on the 22nd. I eat normal. No problems. I do feel some uncomfortable kinks but they are getting better now. I'm SUPER happy that I've had the surgery. I feel like a new person, I feel I can breathe again and LUCKY that it did not strangulate me. This is not a joke to mess with. If you have a hiatal hernia, please be careful and if it needs to be repaired, do it. It's better than dying.
I was going to do the bariatric surgery but...I have already lost 40 lbs. Now I can finally lose weight like a normal person.
