I have been diagnosed with a huge HH (90% of stomach in my chest), but I have no symptoms of GERD or anything else. Just sporadic anemia. Surgery is recommended to prevent volvulus, as it is 50% fatal if it occurs, which the surgeon admits is rare.

Anyone have experience with elective asymptomatic HH repair?

Did you go back to your surgeon and is your pain getting better? It could be theo operation failed.

I have all these symptoms and more, I had my gal bladder removed, had two very large stones in it. They also said I have a large hiatal hernia, anyone ever feel like they have swallowed something and it is stuck, hurts into my head and ears and then goes away? I too can't sleep laying on my sides, can't breath, I want to have this fixed!!

I had this surgery and I regret it. I had all the pains, panic attacks and problems ppl are talking about. The pains in your back and shoulders are the stress on your diaphram. I know from experience. The nerves in your upper back attach thru there. Those pains did go away with the surgery. Although my acid reflux is gone, other problems have developed. For starters, I cant vomit anymore. You dont realize how convenient this is until you cant do it any longer. I have pain when I eat constantly. And also have horrible hunger pains if I dont eat often. I was only aware of one style of repair for this problem. Do your research people. If you get the wrap style repair, much of your life will be changed. And there isnt much they can do for you after they perform the surgery because of scar tissue. The doctors wont tell you about all the complications unless you ask the questions. I would rather deal with things the way they were. For those with the major back pain, I can say that losing weight will help a lot before any kind of surgery. Also, strengthen your abdominal muscles too. this helped me a lot before the surgery.

After being sick for six month,they did a barium swallow test on me & found a large Hiatal hernia & decided my gallbladder was bad,so they finally decided on surgery to remove my gallbladder & do a Hiatal hernia repair.Let me tell you after all the excruciating pain & sickness I went through this surgery has been a breeze except for one problem I'm having.I'm having severe pain in my shoulders that I didn't have before.I'm on pain medication but just get a mild form of relief for about 2-3hrs.I go to the doctor in 2 days & I hope to find out the problem & I'll try to let you know.But by all means, surgery was by far the best choice for me.Best of luck Dr.Campbell of Premiere surgical in Knoxville did mine,& he's done two other hernia repairs for me like they were nothing{/QUOTE}

Thank you miduncan6823. I am trying to decide whether to have the surgery on my large periesophageal hiatal hernia. I have no symptoms other than occasional anemia from friction bleeding in the hernia area. When I have been anemic, I have twice had transfusions, and once had IV iron over the last five years. Not bad for an old gal. But the MD says if I need the surgery later, I will likely not withstand it as well, that is the reason to do it while it is elective. On the other hand, I may never need it as I have had this hernia for about ten years now, and these are my only symptoms. What do others with few symptoms think?

I cant believe the doctors don't think the back pain symptom doesn't relate. I had stomachand back pain for years was diagnosed with GERD,hiatal hernia, and gall stones. Had the gall bladder removed been doing pretty good for about 6 yrs now and all the suddenly laying flat tonight and I started getting a very heavy painful feeling on my chest and pressure in my upper back. I'm only 24 and do not believe it has anything to do with my lungs or heart. It's gotta be the hernia, but gosh is it a scary feeling!

Wow, now I dont think I'm crazy anymore. I have been dealing with pain in my left shoulder blade, chocking sensation, like my throat closing and pain around my stomach and left ribs for at least 4 years now. I did have a scope back then and doctor said they did not see anything..Just gave me medicine for Gerd..which I told him I did not have..I then seen 3 other doctors who all said it was in my head and wanted me to take antidepressents......I'm going to find another doctor tomorrow....Does anyone, when they feel like there having a chocking sensation feel it more on the left side than the right?

I don't mean to sound cruel, but Im so glad to find people with the same burning back pain symptom. I feel like I'm going insane, and at times think I have lung or stomach cancer, because of the burning and tingling in my back. My doctor put me on Omeprazole two months ago, and for the first month they worked fine - I forgot all about the hernia. But now the pain is back, and the breathlessness, especially at night. Isn't it awful? What is you're doctor doing to treat your hernia? I feel that hernia sufferers are just fobbed off with 'oh, just avoid caffeine, smoking and fatty foods - off you go'. I'd love to hear if you find a medicine that works for this symptom.

When you had the hiatal hernia did you feel like if you throat was closing in on you, a tight feeling?
Yes - sometimes I just can't swallow. It feels like there's a lump there, or even worse, that the muscles just won't work. I understand this is due to the hernia making a kink in the throat.

Would you mind talking offline?

amazed that after 15 months of back pain that there are others who are feeling the same. two years ago i was diagnosed with hiatal hernia & then got pregnant shortly after. no symptoms until after birth of large baby. back started hurting about 2 months after birth. i have went to a back specialist, chiro. had xrays and mri and no one can find anything. i feel crazy. my upper back pain is very real & debilitating. recently, noticed my back pain is always with heartburn. left shoulder was so bad about 3 weeks ago that I had to get an immediate appointment for the pain. cortizone shot was no help. since reading this forum I have a call in to the doc's office for a consult to see if the two can be related.

Hi I have been having pain in my left shoulder blade when I am eating, but only after my stomach starts to fill. For example, I can only eat half a hamburger, then it hurts each time I swallow. I believe I have a hiatal hernia, but have only had mild symptoms above my stomach.(Pain if I overeat,or cough,sneeze,etc.) Has anyone had this? Thankyou

I am having the laproscopy surgery April 6th....I am worried, but I cannot live with the symptoms. I will come back and let everyone know how it goes and how I am feeling. I hope it will help someone else make the descision after I have it done. Can someone tell me the diet you were on and how long after the surgery. I am having them call me back to let me know, because I forgot to ask and they didn't say. Did you loose weight? How difficult was it (the diet)? I think I am more worried about that then the surgery itself. Thanks..Any help will be appreciated!

Yes like you can get anything down your throat kind of like something is stuck in there. I get it when the hiatal hernia is very aggravated. Sorry you are experiencing this too. It is very scary.

I am going to see a surgen today and YES I felt like i was choking. I woke up one night and freaked out i thought i was chocking but could still breath, went to the urgent care that morning and they said it was clear, went to the doc later in the day got a cat and a swallow test and some antacid and they said i had a hernia in my stomach. when i get stressed or anxiouse that feeling worsens but is tollerable through out a normal day. It sucks but yes that is part of it at least for me.

I had hiatal hernia surgery a year ago, and I lost 10 pounds. I'm finding it very difficult to gain any kind of weight back. Is that because of the surgery? Can I gain the weight bacK?
