Hi everyone ,
I had the inguinal hernia surgery 3 years ago, I still having burning and pain. I just meet with the
surgeon last week and he found that I have a small reccurence hernia on my left side. Next week I will have an open operation to repair the reccurence hernia. The surgeon said he will cut all 3 nerve this time. I said how about just repair
the hernia without cut the nerves, Surgeon I may still have pain after the repair, if do not cut the nerves. anyone have any ideal???
Thank you very much for your information in advance.

If the surgeon cuts the nerves, you will have numbness and possibly a burning sensation in the upper thigh and lower abdomen.
My surgery was 3 and a half years ago, the nerves were cut, and I still have the numbness and burning.
Hope this helps and good luck.

I believe the burning is caused by neuropathy, damaged or irritated nerves.

My last repair for an inguinal hernia to the left side groin area left me with a slightly swollen and numb area running down the upper inside of my upper thigh. it's been a year now and I am not expecting any feeling to return. i'm not sure why the area is still swollen, but there is no discomfort to speak of, so i'm just rolling with it

I had open inguinal hernia surgery five days ago. Havent had bowl movement in six days untill today. Ever since then i have noticed it feels like the hernia is back in my left scrotum. Also alot of pain in rectum. Could the severe constapation have pushed back threw and caused reacurrent inguinal or insicional hernia.

I had double inguinal heria surgery three weeks ago and I think that I am making a good recovery. I had the hernia for 30 years and decided to have the operation after it recently became strangulated. I haven't suffered any numbness so far, but was constipated the first time I passed a motion after the operation, and my penis was very bruised for a week or so. I have found considerable variation in the post recovery advice from doctors and on the web. I resumed sex, but gently, on the third day three times a day, without ill effect. Gentle massage by my partner may have helped the bruising to disappear. I have not returned to the gym yet but I think I can resume a normal life soon but without heavy lifting.I am aged 70 and consider that i was pretty fit and active beforehand. I think I have been fortunate but my experience may encourage others to proceed who may be contemplating the operation.

I would welcome, and thank god for numbness, and cannot believe people are saying it is a problem.
How about stabbing, burning, severe, keep you up at night, affect all aspects of your life pain instead of numbness?

I HAD RIGHT OPEN INGUINAL SURGERY WITH MESH LAST WEEK. I THOUGHT I WOULD BE BACK TO WORK IN A FEW DAYS (YEAH RIGHT!). I SEEM TO BE GETTING A LITTLE BETTER EVERY DAY EXCEPT FOR THIS CRAZY STABBING/BURNING PAIN RIGHT WHERE THE TOP OF MY PENIS AND SCROTUM MEET. IT HAPPENS ALL OF A SUDDEN FROM ODD STUFF LIKE RAISING MY ARMS OVER MY HEAD OR TRYING TO GET OUT OF BED OR SHIFTING POSITIONS. IT FEELS LIKE SOMEONE IS TAKING AN ICEPICK AND STABBING ME. THE PAIN IS VERY SUDDEN. IF I PUT MY FINGER ON IT. IT SEEMS TO HELP. BUT WHAT I ALSO FIND STRANGE IS THAT THE HERNIA OPERATION INCISION IS LIKE 4 INCHES ABOVE WHERE I AM GETING THIS SHARP SUDDEN PAIN. ANY IDEAS??

Hello, all. I'd like to know just how much pain there should be from open hernia surgery after two weeks. I'd like to know how I'm doing. I'm about a two on a one to ten scale. Not horrible, but still unsettling. Thanks!

To Consuelo, I'm not sure the numbness would bother me a lot, unless it affected sexual function, or it actually hurt.
To Tom New York, I guess strange pain several inches from the actual incision is normal. I think we've all had it. Also, the penis/scrotom area of pain probably is normal too. I have it. It's been three weeks now, and I'm just beginning to think I might be a normal person again soon.

You seem to be suffering from chronic nerve pain associated with the hernia repair. You need to discuss your case with the surgeon who performed your original surgery. He or she will know details of your original procedure. You may benefit from a re-exploration with sectioning of your ilioninguinal / iliohypogastric nerve. A nerve block may provide some temporary relief. A pain management specialist may be able to locate the offending nerves and kill them.
<quoted text>
This is all well and fine, but the big thing is, when you kill the nerve you also kill other sensors which the nerve branches off to. I know this for a fact because I myself have had 2 surgeries to fix the problem. The original was to repair a inguinal hernia, the second 3 years later, was to repair the repair and I wound up with an entrapped nerve which NO surgeon will touch because of possible further complications. My best advice is to do your home work and seek specialists to get an informed decision and lastly, here's the bad news, based on my experience, you are more than likely going to have to live with it. Contrary to what "surgeons" say. It has been over a year since my repair (march 2011) and through a lot of physio therapy and the love of my wife and family and lots of gabapentin it still hurts like there is no tomorrow, but you just have to deal with it. I am trying to get a class action going here in Canada over the Bard perfix plug and mesh and even got in touch with Davol, they said there are no complaints so far and I was the first. So, anyone with those particular products which failed, please email me at [email protected]
