NixaMan, your story is very interesting. But I have an interesting story for you. My brother's wife sister had a mesh removed and no mesh was used to replace it. They did not even stitch it up. I think this is what a surgeon proposed to "Another Jeff"- Dr. Peter Billing. I am new to this and in a lot of pain and decided to take the whole summer off and the fall and go back to school in the winter time. I may drive to see Dr. Ramshaw. I am not sure who the surgeon was that did my brother's wife sisters surgery. I called and they didn't know. But I believe if there is no hernia and it could be the scar tissue is sufficient to keep the hernia from recurring. I think this is also Dr. Billings theory. I don't know because I have not spoke to either of them.

Hi Steamer:

Very interesting... please do investigate further and report back.

Thanks!

Howie;
I'm now a full 5 weeks out from having the mesh removed from me and I fill great. Last weekend I went fishing for the first time in a year. Where I fish from the bank is pretty rocky and I have do alot of moving around and bending down. Then on July 5th I was out in my boat. I was a little sore from using muscles tht I had not used in over a year. But I had NO PAIN.
Dr. Ramshaw did a mesh removal and repaired the herina with sticthes. He did not want to use the lighter wiegth mess, since I my body was rejecting the mesh.
He is a great doctor, very friendly and his staff is great.
Contact his office and he has a Reseach article that he can send you that will explain your pain and has some great information. It actually helped my wife understand why I had become so irritable and depressed.
Let me know if you have other questions.

Hey Another Jeff;
When you see Dr. Ramshaw in August will you be driving or Flying?
Also, there is a Hampton Inn just across from the hospital. Just in case your staying in town. It's brand new and my wife stayed there while I was in the hospital.

As some of us are trying to do some research into the top surgeons can any of you give you your experience with DR. Petersen. He is also mentioned on Dr. Goodyear's board.
Also, about Dr. Peter Billing, I thought there was somebody that had seen him. Can you elaborate if you did?
P.S. I am aware of patients with the other surgeons.
I've had 2 consultations with Dr. Petersen and he seems qualified and experienced. He told me that I need to have hernia surgery again since my surgery was "botched".

To Lala

I thought I read you were a patient of Dr. Towfigh. Why are you not going back to her? Are you seeing Dr. Petersen for surgery? Sorry I am a little confused.

Dr. Petersen is right there in Las Vegas. I think there was someone else that had surgery from a Dr. Towfigh but there was never any long term follow-up I have seen on this board.

Anyway, Lala, please let me know what is happening. I may travel to Las Vegas myself, but still looking into some of the other docs (Dr. Ramsahw, Dr. Peter S. Billing in Seattle or Edmonds, Wa, Dr. William Myers in Pennsylvania at Drexel University).

This is important, if you have gone to Dr. Shirin Towfigh for surgery or a redo, please let us know how you made out. She is on the board of the American Hernia Society and I can't find anyone that had real positive outcome with her. So please, please, this is very important as many of us thought about going to see her.

Michelle:

You need to read here and at the other two hernia discussion boards the many posts by "jeff." He has recently had a very positive experience in a redo surgery with Dr. Towfigh. His posts are very recent -- I'm surprised you've missed them.

I'm sorry, it is very confusing. Dr. Towfigh performed my surgery, but I've had numerous complications (in addition to severe pain) and she didn't seem to know why. When I recently visited Dr. Petersen to get a 2nd opinion, he stated that she's only a 2-year intern and maybe not qualified to perform complicated hernia surgeries. Additionally, Dr. Towfigh said that my appendix had pushed through the hole in my pelvic area, but Dr. Petersen said that it was a fallopian tube.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with Dr. Jonathan Yunis in Sarasota, Fl. I'm in touch with him, and he seems experienced and knowledgeable about redo/repair surgery for pain complications. He has some seemingly good ideas, he does over 400 hernia surgeries a year, and he's involved in up to date training and thinking about the major debates and issues...

Thanks to anyone with relevant experience...

Hi Michelle...I had a re-do surgery by Dr. Towfigh 6 weeks ago. The mesh inside me was so balled up and was causing so much damage and pain. After 8 months after original surgery no one would operate on me except Dr. Towfigh and Dr Grischkan in Ohio. I chose Dr Towfigh because I live in Los Angeles.

Anyways what she found was a complete mess. To make a long story short I am feeling very well most of the time. Keep in mind its only been 6 weeks and I had extensive damage and now back to doing everything I did before, relatively pain free. So whatever she did works for me.

Her follow up care has been wonderful. I am back to exercising and having great sex again. I only say that because none of that was possible after botched surgery.

All the different Dr's I spoke to before my surgery spoke very highly of Dr. Towfigh. Someone posted earlier a comment by a Doc that said she may not be qualified is absurd. Why any Dr would say that about another is just not ethical.

Thats my positive experience. My email is travlagt@yahoo.com if you would like to know more.

My husband had a right subinguinal varicocelectomy done back in 2001. He's felt uncomfortable ever since. The discomfort has grown to be almost unbareable over the past 2 months. I'm looking for a good Dr. in the San Diego area who has experience with hernia repairs. Any suggestions? Every Dr. we've visited keeps telling us that there is nothing wrong with him! They would not say that if they felt what he was going through!!!

Yes, Drive to LA and see Dr. Towfigh

For others in various vicinities, you may see
Dr. Bruce Ramshaw at Columbia Ohio (Univesity of Missouri)
Dr. Kevin Petersen, in Las Vegas
Dr. David Grischkan in Cleveland Ohio
Dr. William Meyers, Drexel University College of Medicine in Pennsylvania
Dr. Peter S. Billing in the Seattle, WA area
Dr. Jonathan Yunis Center for Hernia Repair in Sarasota Florida

From what I have read, I think any of them would be a good choice

Someone by the name of Lala above stated that Dr. Petersen told her that Dr. Towfigh was only a two year intern. I don't know Lala but I would seriously doubt that Dr. Petersen would tell her that. Dr. Towfigh has been around for a long time and I spoke with someone who had Dr. Towfigh do a complicated surgery re-do. In fact, Dr. Amid would not do this surgery. This makes me wonder about Dr. Amid. Howie had indicated that DR. Amid uses a state university as a front for his Lictenstein Institute. I am not sure if this is ethical or not to advertise a private practice on his state of California bio.

The someone is "me" who posted the comments. I understand that your surgery was a success but mine was not. I am merely stating the facts in that regard. I too was referred to Dr. Towfigh by another physician who spoke highly of her. That's how I came to be her patient. However, I am posting to this forum looking for a solution since I obviously will need another surgery.

Dr. Towfigh is very pleasant and willing to answer questions, but she doesn't have any answers for my situation. She said she doesn't know why all of these issues occurred. Unfortunately, I have experienced numerous complications that have resulted in a significant lifestyle change for me. I cannot work, I can't walk for even 20 minutes; I can't sit for long periods of time. I can't sleep on my left or right side; I can't cross my legs or squat. If I do, I experience immediate pain and numbness in my pelvic, inner thigh and pubic area. I was able to do all of these things prior to my surgery. I have nerve damage in an area that I feel should not have been impacted by the surgery and that tissue will never recover.

I'm not bad-mouthing Dr. Towfigh, I'm just stating that all of her surgeries have not been successes. As far as the other surgeon who made the comments regarding her expertise. That's his opinion and I don't see his comments as "unethical", but rather bold and maybe unprofessional. I personally wouldn't say anything bad about her, but at the same time, I need help.

Michelle, you are correct, you don't know me. How would you? I'm not looking to promote my integrity or my reputation. I don't want to exchange words with someone about my experience when they obviously haven't experienced it. I just put the information out there since it was indeed said. He mentioned that that some hernia surgeries require a surgeon with more experience. He felt that Dr. Towfigh is at a teaching hospital and has only been out of medical school for 2 yrs. I don't think that's true since she graduated 7 yrs. ago. I'm not sure why he said that or if he looked up some obsolete information. I was really surprised in fact since he doesn't know me that well.

I'm sure Dr. Petersen told me this information not expecting me to post it in a forum, but he did challenge her expertise. However, I didn't challenge her expertise, I just truthfully said that my hernia surgery was not a success. I know that I need a surgery re-do, I'm just not sure who to trust at this point.
