Ohio VA hospital: 9 tested positive for hepatitis | The Columbus Dispatch

Officials at a Veterans Administration hospital in southwest Ohio say nine patients have tested positive for hepatitis in screenings conducted because of a dentist who failed to change gloves and sterilize instruments properly between patients. Read more

Half the doctors at the Columbus facility received their training and certification from a foreign country, and the American doctors are either retired and/or not capable of non-government work. Service is terrible, except for the veterans that assist in providing needed care. This is another example of an agency that needs to be privatized.

The Chief of the Dental Service, Chief of Staff and the facility Direcer should all be replaced. Where was the mandated quality control? Even under obamacare verrterans will still be treated as second class citizens. Wonder if the dentist was even licensed in Ohio. The VA should not be permitted to hire foreign educated medical personnel. Most speak but do not understand english and their dedication to heath care is questionable. Just want to send money home.
You are so right.

The facilities and equipment don't make it a A1 facility. In fact who ever planned and developed this facility did not project the future use, another prime example of government inefficency. Parking is terrible, the facility is congested and the service is terrible. The administrators act like they are there to do you a favor, after they drink their coffee and finishing BSing with each other.

Did you report this inadequate VA customer service to your Patient Advocate? Who did outpatient back surgery on you?

There is a VA clinic in Columbus. But I'm pretty sure it is just a clinic, not a hospital. It's on the east side.

There is no excuse for this, I'll bet it would not happen in one of Ohio's prisons. Shame on this dentist and on the VA clinic for not finding out about this sooner.

Mr Lion, Please aquaint yourself more fully with the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus Ohio @ 420 North James Road. It is not a Hospital. You stated that this clinic treats mostly older men. It offers a wide variety of services to Veteransof all age and gender. There are Social workers and Homeless specialists. There are both a Geriatric department and a Women's Clinic on the second floor of the building. One on one side of the building and one on the other.

There is also a community council made up of veterans that meet each second and fourth Tuesday at 3 pm on the first floor in the mental health dept. The name of that group is VAIM and there is a website. Come into your veterans facility and get the facts. Mental Health awareness day will be observed at the Clinic on June 8, 2011. Lets quit sniping at each other.

Under president Barack Obama and our current Sect. of Veteran Affairs, who btw is a retired General, there is in place now both vision and oversight for Veteran's healthcare that has been nonexistent for years. Along with top to bottom upgrades and approaches to patient care at VA facilities this new Sect. rolled out an initative to END Veteran Homelessness. Why not? I salute this president and his sectretary of Vet. Affairs.

FACT: The Cheney/Bush administration defunded the VA, causing the elimination of a large chunk of Vietnam era and other veterans from medical elegibility. Their Republican congress put in a bill that "vets not seen for 12 months and able to earn, get this,$20,000 per year" were eleminated from the roll and our medical records were "retired." I was a victim of this patriotic legislation while my son was being sent to Iraq, where thousands more new casualties were created.

This game of damning us for not worshipping military might and the super wealthy, believing in ourselves, an economic middle class, loving working class human beings and God and country and voting for Democratic political candidates has grown past anoyingly stupid to the point of intolerable nagging insult. I too sing America, and I do not wish to live in a country where only an ignorant, mean spirited, rightwing, cultic, antiScience and antiChrist religious worldview is the only one everyone is demanded to believe in and adhere to. I too sing AMERICA.

In the light of documented facts like this it is no fun to listen to bald faced Rush Limbaugh lies and Glenn Beck fantasies posted by the criminally insane who have nothing better to do but type out polarizing neocon propaganda from undisclosed locations, regardless the topic. Garbaging up information is a dangerous childish prank akin to yelling FIRE in a crowded theater. Take your fear, hate and low self esteem elsewhere. Masturbate and go to sleep.

One must assume that you are either one the the staff or part of management. Defend the VA all you want there is no reason for it to exist. Up until about 1980 it was staffed with doctors and nurses and staff that were veterans. Foreign educated doctors were unheard of. Now you either get a foreign doctor that while speaking english they do not understand it or an OSU redident who is learning on veterans. Once a foreign educated doctor achieved any higher position they immediately recruit their buddies. Regardless of education their culture views life differently than do american doctors.Currently the VA is occupying its third location in Columbus. Why build a hospital to be a training ground or a home for foeign educated doctors? Eliminate the whole facility and let vets be treated near their homes by better educated better caring home grown physicians.

There is a first rate VA ambulatory care center in Columbus with an urgent care. I have excellent private insurance and use the VA facility because I love the treatment I receive there. Reception at patient enrollment could use a few lessons in customer service, but other than that everyone has been wonderful and the facility is amazing.

I do not work for the VA, but I will defend the facility in Columbus. Two of my doctors are veterans as are several others here. My one doctor just got back from his third tour in Iraq. I have had several appointments at the facility and only one doctor was foreign. 37% of the facilities employees are veterans. They are big on hiring disabled veterans as well where as many other places turn their backs on veterans. No one HAS to come here and many are grateful the place exists.

It's a standardized care facility like any For-profit organization. The truth is, if the only way you have to pay for your health care is by insurance, the best you'll get anywhere is ONE SIZE FITS ALL.

Try to get a rare disease treated at the VA. You might just as well be at McDonald's and try to order Chateau Briand. You'll still walk out with a Big Mac.

I have to go clear to Germany for info on my condition. I get the meds at the VA. And that's all that's available since they refuse to answer questions. But researchers in Germany are more than happy to help. Go figure.

Yo Bob, get off your soap box, a retired general in charge of a VA agency doesn't make it great, i.e, Benedict Arnold. And the facility is named after a VA Republican advocate, and was approved for construction under the Bush administration. Now, in regards to your boy Obama, he is now taking air and ground troops that are needed in Iraq and Afganistan, to provide protection for the arabs in Libya. Makes a hell of a lot of sense. You know Bob, you have been watching to much of that liberal, left wing, union loving, hind tit news network, MSNBC, anchored by mr/ms Madcow. You have now what psychologists call a "Warped Mind."

Indeed, it's a lovely facility with state of the art everything, except doctors. Many of those docs are retired from their own practices and wrapping up their career. Many were trained by the VA and are indentured servants until their contract time is up. Many, including urology can't cut it in the ForProfit system. Many have been sued so many times, they can't afford their insurance any longer.

The facility is everything money can buy, including the new Valet Parking run by volunteers, which we truly appreciate. Much of the staff is nothing to write home about and some of them are quite dangerous to the health and welfare fo the patients. Buyer beware. Its why they have patient advocates on board.
