I don't know what other's experiences are with prevpac, but I took it for the prescribed two weeks and nearly died. I had my reservations about taking this massive barrage of pills, but submitted to it per Dr.s orders. I started feeling very tired, tachycardic and weak over the two weeks. As I didn't feel any differently two days after I had finished the pills, I went to my doctor to have blood work. My hematocrit had dropped from 31 to 18 in the two weeks. That is like losing nearly half of your red blood cells! Apparently, I had a hemolytic reaction to these pills, most likely to the Biaxin.
I had a bad feeling about taking this prevpac and wish I had just done a wholistic treatment. I would strongly admonish anybody who is faced with taking prevpac to reconsider and try natural cures. Plus, from all I understand, H.pylori can and most likely will return despite the horrific treatment with prevpac because the doctors don't address the underlying reasons why some people have this bug and live in harmony with it, while others sustain harm from it. Typical doctors; easy to dish out the drugs. Also, h.pylori apparently can live on toothbrushes. I wish I knew that after having gone through the treatment. NO doctors tell you this. You will just reinfect yourself if you don't have your whole family treated AND basically sanitize your home where it can breed.

i so agree with you. i have been on prevpac for 12 days now. i thought it was depression makin me more sleepy, which h.pylori also does to a person. ive been experiencing more bloating and gas pains and pains in my lower back. oh and not to mention the chest pains that run down my arm. so like it makes me paranoid. my fear is re-infection. i think my kids got it too. when you are a parent, your children have the tendencies to always want to eat and drink out of your stuff. so now im off to buy a big jar of listerine and im going to soak my toothbrush in fresh listerine daily to see if that help with re-infection. good luck feel better to all the sufferers

I havebeen diagnosed with H.Pylori and prescribed the double antiviotics (two different kinds) and Pepto Bismol for two weeks. Even though I explained how any type of medicine does me, they say I have to do it. Well, after reading some of these forums, I don't plan to take the medication, didn't even get it filled. I am searching for a natural source and gathering my information on why I can't go with the theory that zapping them with antibiotics is the cure all when in fact in appears to cause even worse problems for some.

DO NOT TAKE PREVPAC. It is for your own good. I took one course of this garbage and right now looking for a good lawyer. There were no side effects while taking it but after two weeks passed I started having pain in my lower back and pelvis area. It is being more than a year, I took many different probiotics, went through many tests to determine the cause of the pain(with no success). My vitamin B is decreasing which means the digestion system does not work properly. I have never had any problems before taking prevpac. Kathy, do you still experience problems? This can be class auction suit against this pharmacist. I am thinking of including my "doctor" into it.

I just finished the 14 days of the Prevpac. Wow, I have had almost all the side effects mentioned. The worst being first the headaches, then the awful taste in my mouth, then my throat feeling very closed off, then my tongue feeling swollen, my back hurts, but the worst, THE YEAST INFECTION. The corners of my mouth are so cracked they are painful. Called the doc for some antifungal meds, don't know when that will work. My mouth is very uncomfortable. Surly there are other drugs to combat this H-pylori other than Prevpac. This was unbearable to do. Beware, Ask Questions, be informed.

Oleg. Sorry to hear about your problems. I recently finished a course of Losec (which includes 2 of the 3 items in Pevpac I think) and immediately after I finished I also started having lower back and pelvic pain which I still have. I am interested to know what type of pain is yours? Mine is not constant but when I bend or twist in a certain way..

I recently was diagnosed with H.Pylori. I was prescribed a PREVPAC. This is my fourth day on the medication.
The first morning I took the four pills on a empty stomach as required. I became involved with working on a computer issue and forgot to eat for a couple of hours. The pain in my stomach became acute, I then forced myself to eat and the pain subsided by half. I was determined to never do that again. I have since eaten after each dosage.
About ten minutes after finishing both the dosage and the meal I begin to feel pain in my upper stomach area. It is accompanied by a pressure at the lowest part of my ribcage and migrates to my right side and then to my back. This pain at times is very strong and dull. I feel bloated within a hour after eating just a handful of food.
I have a decreased appetite, for example a few tablespoons of soup are enough to satisfy my appetite. I know this is not enough so I force myself to eat almost all of the bowl. I eat only soft foods because any meal with meat hurts to much to eat. I guess I am a vegetarian for the next 10 days. I have lost 10 lbs over the course of 10 or so days due to the pain envolved in eating prior to and including the treatment. I hat yogurt but that strangely seems to ease the pain dramatically so I eat that twice a day. Late at night I wake up with a painful stomach ace and the pain subsides within 30 minutes after eating a Yoplait yogurt. Inactivity makes the pain worse, I tried to sit and lye down the first day and realized that made it worse. It was the weekend so this was possible. As the days progress I am feeling better and I hope it continues.
I just wanted to share this with those who experience more pain from the cure than from the illness that started this fourteen day process. That pain was scaring the hell out of me and I thought I would quit the medication on the second day.
I realize that it has been only four days and that is not the total experience but aside from the pain and bloating I have not experienced any other side effects. The pain is becoming less with each day. I hope this helps someone with similar symptoms. Have a good day

I finished my antibiotics a month ago and I have lower abdominal pain, pain under rib cage pelvic pain since the 2nd day of medication. It is mostly on my right. I started mastic gum and probiotic recently. They seem to help a bit. I should see. I think there is tiny amount of blood in my stool. I am so tired of these side effects!

Hi Anna
So sorry to hear of your pain. This really is a horrible thing to deal with. I have been taking mastic gum for several weeks now (having been found still positive after the Losec). I've been been feeling pretty good apart from the back pain, definitely not so tired and bloated. Will be getting tested again this week to see if the mastic gum has worked or not. If not, I think I will have to try more antibiotics as much as I really don't want to. I will keep you posted as to whether the mastic gum has worked or not.

Okay, its day seven on PrevPac for H-pylori. Things are better, and pain is subsiding. Night 5 , I could not sleep. I had a slice of pizza for dinner at 6pm and by 8pm I was in total agony. I new it was wrong but I have not had any meat since this started. It was a bad idea.

What works for me is to eat a full vegetable meal with either mac and cheese or mash potatoes in lieu of a meat. I eat at 6pm and at midnight I wake with a minor stomach ache. I feel hungry so I get up and eat a yoplait and small glass of water. I apply heat to my stomach area with a heating pad and fall asleep in about thirty minutes and sleep till 5am. I have no pain when I wake up, drink a few cups of coffee the take the dreaded 4 pills and eat immediately after. I get ready for work and I'm good to go till noon when I again eat soup with about 3 saltine crackers. The soup is either potato or pea or chowder, and I feel good till dinner.

As the days on the medication become greater the pain and discomfort and bloating are less and less. My constipation has relented and I can now pass gas, my bowels are working reducing the bloating greatly. I believe I am over the hump and pray I don't experience any of the after effects those in the preceding posts have mentioned. I can really understand why some would quit this medication after 2 days. I almost did. If I experience any thing unusual I will post back but for now I am felling much better. Thanks to all who have posted. It has helped me through this.

I took the prev-pac and got blood sugars flunctuated, and it made me feel nausea and my bones felt week. I then developed a thyroid problem and now have bad cholesterol and only weigh 143 lbs?? so, prev-pac was horrible with horrible headaches, etc.. I thought I literally was going to die, it was terrible, I drank vitamin water and chicken noodle soup and saltine crackers, the only thing that made me feel better, I too lost my appetite and my vit b-12 level was lowered and also vitamin D became more deficient. It was an the worst experience of my life, I have never been so sick.

Julia, check with your doctor, nausea is one of the side effects you should report. I combated the nausea by eating very small portions at first and I would have to lay down after every meal. Find something you can eat, Lisa mentioned soup and saltine crackers and that worked for me too. About 3 or 4 crackers was all I could eat in the beginning. This medicine (at least for me) has been the toughest stuff I have ever had to take. But in all fairness I almost never take medicine as I don't get sick much.

It is day 10 for me and almost all of my side effects are gone now. Last night I slept the entire night for the first time since this all started. I ate fish for dinner and it sat well on my stomach with no pain or discomfort. In the begining I thought this would never end. Good luck

I took the Prevpac [once] about two years ago, as prescribe by my internist for my frequent heartburn/acid reflux - caused by H-pylori. The long and short of it, it was the most barbaric medicine treatment I've ever had to do. Did it cure my acid reflex? Short answer, no. To it's credit though, I was reflux-free for about year, only getting having what I would call "the normal burps"-not that throat knotting kind I was having. Fastforward to today, I'm back to the throat-knot heartburn again. I just started taking the Mastic Gum and so far I'm having some encouraging results. Personally, I will never do the Prevpac a again. I't just too much [cost, pills, suffering, etc] for too little or no result.
