Paying your out of pocket expenses in the calendar year

Any help here would be appreciated. I have searched all over for the answer and no one seems to directly answer this. My mom had surgery and radiation last 3 months. She has a $6700 out of pocket maximum. She certainly reached that level as per the eob's. She paid out in actual payments only $2200 so far. If she goes into 2013 not actually having paid out the remainder (she doesnt plan to. SHe plans on making small payments to the providers over the next year). Does she incur any penalties for not physically having paid out the $6700? Meaning, can she get stuck with all the outstanding amounts not paid by her insurnce co by the end of the year.I tried to make my question as clear as I could. Any thoughts and thank you.
