I was diagnosed with giardia based on my symptoms. I did like 5 stool test and 2 colonoscopy/biopsies.
Everything would always come back negative. I did 2 rounds of Flagyl and 2 rounds of Alinia.

Yeah that's good you have a naturopathic doctor who is willing to test your stools for yeast etc.

So what were your symptoms before? Are they different now?

The main symptom with giardia was weight loss. After I got rid of it, I started puting weight on fast, which is a sign of candida. The problem with Flagyl is that most doctors start out with 250mg 3x a day for 7 days, where they should do 500mg 3x a day for 14 days. The giadia becomes immune to it and it no longer works after the first round. Or my dr said I could of had cryptosporidium which Flagyl doesnt help anyway but Alinia does both. After 4 rounds of stomach antibiotics I picked up Candida, which came up in the lastest stool sample. However, candida and giardia symptoms were very similar: diareheah, stomach pains, teeth grinding, cold feet, rectal itch etc.

Also swollen eyes. I will tell you what product helped a lot was VitaCoco. Its a new sports drink sold in the US. Parasites hate coconut water and I felt like it made a difference.

Gerald -

"If you do not take metro in the beginning this can kill you."

I don't know where you get your load of misinformation to base such an ignorant and uninformed statement. I definitely beat it using natural methods, and look - no Metro at all and I'm still alive. Please do your research on Oregon Grape Root & Pau d' Arco and learn what a natural antibiotic can do for you.

The best thing that I ever did for this was take Primal Defense - a mix of many probiotics. Let healthy bacteria push this foreign bacterial infection out.

Good luck.

Hi Brady,

How long did you have giardia for? And how much weight did you lose? I lost a lot of weight in the first 2 months, but then it kind of stabilized. So I'm not sure if it's gone because I'm still underweight but I'm not losing anymore.

I think I had it for 6 months. I lost about 15 lbs. After I took the Alinia, I got my appetite back and started to gain weight fast- about 20 lbs in 2 months. However, I still had a lot of the same symptoms like diarrheah and stomach pain. Thats when the dr told me about candida.

I tried almost everything at first, I lost 2 stone in weight and

I now believe that given time your body will fight back to help BUT eating fresh coconut which contains coconut oil and I drank the water inside helped me put some weight back on and feel better.

I also believe that MSM helped kill the parasites and the Allicinmax kills off the bacteria from the parasites. I have gained back almost all my weight now and can eat what I like.
I take a good probiotic every day!

I think Celeste is right about the probiotics and also Brad about the candida afterwards, I would think probably the antibiotics cause this problem.

Antibiotics wipe out all your good bacteria as well as the bad, so then your body is sepectable so you need a good probiotic to put back the good bacteria which your body need to protect you.

Remember what works for one might not work for another but the above definately worked for me.
I think the natural products are far better for you BUT if you prefer to take Metro/Tinidazole then please take a good probiotic.

You are what you eat, so a good diet is important, I ate junk food before all this and that's probably why I had a low immune to catch giardia in the first place. Keep a good immune system take vit 'C'
I hope this helps you!

Just got diagnosed with giardia. I've been symptomatic for about 4 week. Dr. prescribed Flagyl. Hoping for best.

Flagyl for 7 days didn't work -twice. Had 5 stool tests in 5 months all positive. Then specialist put me on Flagyl 14 days straight. I've now had 2 stoll tests both negative. Also colonscopy as double check all OK.

However it did make my minor IBS much worse. I can manage it though I made the dreadful mistake of taking 3 days of antiinflammatories after a fall and stomach went through torture. Obviously I've stopped taking those. I guess the point is your stomach is worse for wear after Giardia - I guess it eats your stomach lining or something.

I picked up giardiasis 12 months ago in th UK and have now had 5 episodes. After several negative stool tests I tested positive with a antigen test which seemed to provide more accurate results. Have had 3 courses of Metronidazole and 1 course of Quinicaine/ Tinadazole. Symptoms have recurred every time within 2 months. The GI says he has not seen anyone like me without immune deficiencies with refractory (recurrent) giardiasis. Having read the clinical papers posted by Brad, I am now trying a 3 week course of Metronidazole (3x 400mg) combined with Quinicaine (for 10 days). Not finding the drugs too bad at all- a little bit of nausea from Metronidazole is nothing compared with giardiasis! 2 weeks into treatment and feel much better but time will tell if it returns.
Jane, You should have finished the 3 week course by now. Let us know how you are feeling.

Hi All,

There has to be a distinction between Chronic Giardia and Giardia, because they are not the same thing.

The answer to your question, Celeste, is specialists whom specialize in this for the military and civilians. Western medicine and Oriental medicine, including Ayurvedic medicine, has all lead to me successfully managing this for 18 years. No metro since 1998!

Good luck and goodbye to all. This is my last post.

Gerald: Stay with us please. We need your knowledge gained thru experience. Would you mind sharing how you are managing it. I have been dealing with it for 30 months now. It took me a year to find out I had it and after 5 days of Flagyl, the stool tests were all negative for the nex 12 months. However, the symptoms were there. Then this April the biopsy tested positive. In the last four months several courses of antibiotics, including a 21 day course haven't worked. Felt good while taking them and then the symptoms would be back. In the process, I believe I am worse off now with my stomach nerves and most likely the yeast.

Hi Brady,
Can you tell me what dosage you took of the flagyl and Alinia to finally get rid of the giardia. I just finished a 10 day course of flagyl 500mg 3xday and it didnt work. Also, did you experience any side effects from the Alinia?
Thank you

Maggie,

Very little side effects with the Alinia compared to the Flagyl. Alinia- 500mg a day for 7 days.

I had giardia last year with a confirmed stool sample. Took flagyl for 7 days, 500mg 3xday and it went away. I slowly got better and was feeling back to normal when this summer we went camping and I swam and tubed in the American river. It never entered my mind that I would get giardia again. Sure enough, about 7 days after we got home I started to feel bad. Stomach pains, LOUD stomach gurgling, loose yellow stool that floats, anxiety, loss of appetite, feeling weak, no energy. I went back to doctor and she put me on 10 day course of flagyl at 500mg 3xday. My stool sample came back negative prior to treatment but she still treated me based on my symptoms. I finished the flagyl and was feeling much better, then 7 days after stoping all of my symptoms are back and I feel just horrible!! I have an appt with a gastro, but not until the 26th. I would appreciate and and all advise. has anyone ever heard of getting giardia twice and also having a false negative elisa stool sample?

Sorry this is so long, just going crazy feeling so bad.
Thank you so much!!

Read this website below schroll down to parasites:

http://www.msm-info.com/

I believe that MSM does get rid of the giardia parasites but you have to stay with it to get results, it has worked for me.

Because of intermitent shedding of the giardia cysts, this causes many results to come back negative when infact you may well be infected with giardia.
After taking metro it will kill the parasites but does not kill the cysts, so in many cases this is why it can start up again. Nothing kills the cysts to date BUT MSM makes your intestines unfriendly to parasites they can not stick to the intestine so they drop off and get washed away out of your system.
