Ear pain and GERD

I guess there must be a relationship between GERD or other stomach acid-problems, and ear itching/pain. Besides these, I also have a burning feeling inside the back of my head, sometimes less in my neck and spinal cord. Interesting: I have been diagnosed with chronic gastrites, GERD, possibly Barrett, but very rarely feel heartburn or food up high, and don't have a acid taste in my mouth. I also have a low functioning thyroid (inflamed), and am wondering of this could be connected too. Maybe Chinese medicine understands these connections better.

I have a diagnosis by HIDA scan and I have gallstones with a slowing of my digestive processes. This has been going on for two years with occasional classic gallstone pain however recently I have been getting very distressing pain and extreme irritation in my right ear and throat with bruised feeling at base of skull. I thought this was an ear infection and although the GP could not see any infection he gave me antibiotics in case. I also had drops which did not help. The condition comes on suddenly for no apparent reaosn and seems unrelated to types of food and I am on a fairly low fa diet now. Having read thse other posts I feel sure it must be to do with gas from my digestive system as described above. I am taking Protium at intervals for Gastric reflux. Right now it is 2.27 am and I am being driven insane by this part pain part itch inside my right ear and deep in my throat. It could well be an irritated eustachian tube but I can also feel very sensitised places just inside my outer ear..feels intensely inflamed .

Yes I had some resolve. I cut out all junk food, all sweeteners, additives to eat as pure as possible.I eat more protein and vegetables ( I didn't eat enough off those, I used to eat more carbs). I feel less burning and other aggrevation like my skull is gone. I think my indigestion is somehow helped by change of diet. I also did a food IgG test, to find out what my food intolerances are. For now, I'm off my stomach medicine, but I still have painful throat. I found out that indigestion is majorly important and if it goes wrong your ears even lungs can be affected! I had a middle ear infection, which could not be helped with drops because the drops can't reach them. I toke antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, but after 7 antibiotics cures for this and that I decided to go the natural way, so far I didn't need any antibiotics. I also tried Chinese Footreflexology, very painful but maybe THE reason I am starting to feel better. Good luck!

O and I also discovered that there is a connection between hypo-thyroidism (slow body) and digestion problems. It's all related, the hormones (lack of), the digestion, the ear / skull pains, etc. I prefer the multi approach: food intolerance diet, low dosage of the supplement natural thyroid medicine (and am being tested for neurotransmitters (urine test) and adrenal glands (saliva test 24 hour) as well to optimise my supplement needs)and whatever Chinese Medicine/reflexology comes on my way!

Just want to chime in - I'm sure others have mentioned it (I didn't read the whole thread) but I too have GERD (throat irritation, ear pain and irritation, gas, acid burps, heartburn) and when it flares (usually stress-related or ibuprofen-related) I take Zegerid OTC for a few days and it usually takes it away pretty quickly. I've had GERD and IBS (?) for about 4 years. Eating pickles or drinking pickle juice eases my throat pain and scratchiness a bit as well. Hope everyone feels better soon.

One more thing - if it's a bad episode, I find the "BRAT" diet helps tremendously (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast).

I REALLY THINK THAT I HAVE SOMETHING ELSE. IVE HAD IT FOR 8 MONTHS JUST RIGHT AFTER THE DENTIST TOOK OUT MY WISDOM TOOTH OUT. OH WELL I GUESS I WILL TRY PEPCID. ANYONE HAS THIS TYPES OF SYMPTOMS
I had a sensation of my neck burning (like someone was holding a hair dryer at my neck) for several years after I had my tonsils removed due to a staph infection. Eventually, this feeling went away but now I have other issues. The sensation of a lump in my throat, a nodule (hard lump) in my neck under my jaw and recently, ear pain in both ears which seems to be getting worse. I have been to dozens of doctors over the years, but not one of them can come up with a diagnosis of any kind, or help me in the slightest. I'm beyond frustrated.

I have been having the same issue for more than 2 months, i used to smoke and i have quit smoking now.
I went to 2 ENT , both confirmed that its not cancer.
ITs due to acid reflux.

The other choice for ringing in ears could be due to TMJ , this will cause , ear ringing, headache and jaw pain. Have that checked out too

I have been diagnosed with GERD. My GP prescribed Prolosec daily. Recently my GERD has been more severe so my GP put me on Protonix X2 daily. I often awake around 2a.m. with very itchy ears and throat which I'm convinced is caused by the reflux. This only happens when I eat acidy foods right before I go to bed.

Before I was diagnosed with GERD I was convniced I had throat cancer. I was a smoker, and had developed a swollen feeling on the right side of my throat accompanied by a radiating pain in my right ear. When I ran a search on the internet those symptoms kept coming back to throat cancer. Does anyone else ever get pain in their inner ear that they associate with GERD?
Went today to doc. pain on the right side of throat and moves up to my right ear....he said I had an irritated asopagus from LPR reflux and gave me meds and wants to see me in six weeks. He put a scope up my nose and followed it down my throat and said 'no tumor and no signs of cancer. However the real test would be a endoscopy if all symptoms continue. Try not to freak out. god Bless

It does get better and worse, yes. You can also get a hypothyroid issue after childbirth. I don't know if it is related in your case, but I do know that it IS possible. You can also order your own bloodtest/salivatest through labs on the internet, without the need for approval of the doctor, these labs also have locations where you can go to have the blood drawn. I had a saliva test for adrenal stress (cortisol and DHEA) 24 hour test done, am glad I did that, not a lot of doctors advise you to do that, but it clarified a lot for me. The thyroid test is a blood test, test TSH and free T3 and T4 levels. If the medicins your doctor prescribes are not helping, you have to be the captain of your own ship, take charge, and look at other options. Good luck!

I have had some of the symptoms a lot of you describe...hoarseness, headache, ear pain and difficulty swallowing. I was scoped and found to have GERD with no significant tissure damage.
Also, I cough so violently at time that I almost hurl..and my ears itch too. MD says the itching is caused by acid refluxing up the eustacean tubes.
I am on one Nexium per day with some relief, but it is not curing everything.
Thankful that I don't have much heartburn pain, but I sure do have a lot of other weird, annoying symptoms.
The kicker is, I dont always know what will bring the symptoms on. Sometimes there is not any atributable realtionship to my eating or activities and the onset of this stuff. FRUSTRATING!
hi
I see your post is old and you may not respond. I have all the symptoms of silent gerd and lpr reflux. I keep a diary of things that I eat and what provokes it, try to avoid them things and have been on an anti candida protocol with anti candida diet. Sometimes I do not even feel the symptoms. I refuse to take PPIs as I think they are dangerous. Hope this helps someone

Hi
I was interested in your post because you are seeking to deal with it naturally, me also. All this stuff has affected my lungs and ear, right side. Did you do the chinese foot reflexology yourself?

Even a simple thing like drinking ice tea sets off the ear and throat pain. I think our bodies have to heal from this stuff. I once read that when you have problems like this you need to avoid everything you have been eating for years and just drink water, in a way makes sense because our bodies have developed allergies to those foods and our bodies are saying no more.

Yes it sounds logical: to just drink water for some days, or maybe fast. My doctor said it can be counterproductive, I tried it for 2 days, did helpsomewhat, but temporary. I don't feel like fasting for more days. The best is probably to either eat small meals (difficult) or fast one day per week. The Chinese foot reflexoly did not help a lot for my stomach (I went to a Chinese master), but temporarily for improving my immune system. I am still off medicins, becuase it hasn't become severe anymore, and I think that is because I changed my life style (very healthy food, no late nights, quit smoking and alcohol). Let me know if you find an alternative method, I am convinced it is out there!

I too have noticed that it starts with the swollen feeling in my throat then progresses to a constant right ear pain. This would be bareble if it wasn't for the severe lightning-like jolts of pain that rip through my head intermittently every few seconds/minutes. Also the entire right side of my head feels like I have a sunburn and even the wind blowing on it is excrutiating. I had GERD, don't have it anymore, but this seeems more neurological to me. Any ideas?
I have exactly the same, I had a small piece of bone removed from my jaw line after I had a infected tooth removed. Now 1 year later I have this same pain in the right ear, under my jawline and up and down my throat only on the rightside, which I am sure its a lymph node inflared. Some teeth hurt but the eectrical blasts everytime I almost moved is making me physically ill. The maxiollofacial surgeon took x-rays but see nothing and no sinus problems as well. Why cant I figure out what this is. It is ruining my quality of life. Did you get any answers for what you have. Please respond. Thank you.
