I have suffered from frontal lobe seizures since I was 15 and have been on Carabamezapine this entire time(now 20 years) and have tried lamictal and in the past and am today taking keppra, and topirimate. I still suffer the odd seizure atleast once a month. The headaches are not so frequent but the drowsiness can be overwheleming from time to time. Is this a healthy combination and good result? I usually have only partail seizures today.

topamax, iagree that i feel i have lost a lot of brain cells since taking topamax and dilantin but i rarely have seizures anymore and can work partime now.my doc told me that i have to concentrate harder to do the same things that used to come easily.i read constantly to fill the void that conversation used to replace.

Diva.It will never be easy to have epilepsy and i didnt mean to set myself up as an expert.we have both had our fill of those!but i wish you all the best.i still find it hard to get work as a cleaner of all things!bosses act like i have a mental disorder and will start doing handstands or something?my brain is still there and still quite active but my words often come out wrong and i get worse trying not to stumble over what i wish to say.so self confidence is the key!and a little finger in the air doesnt hurt either%%

Am on 300 mg Topamax for seizure control. Have been on it for 2 years now. Had some pins and needles for the first few months but now I don't have any side effects...except weight loss. Not only are my seizures controlled, but I've lost 20 pounds over the last 2 years. I needed to lose it anyway, but I swear this stuff is a wonder drug. I had been on Depakote for quite some time and had gained an excessive amount of weight...not to mention elevated LFT results. Needless to say, this drug has changed my life. I know another person who takes Topamax for migraine prevention and she had pins and needles too when she first started. Almost a year later, she has been completely migraine free with no side effects. Not to mention the 11 pounds she dropped. The comments about "dying brain cells" and "shrinking heads" are ridiculous. Do some of your own research and you'll know that it's simply not true. The best thing we can do is educate ourselves so that we know more about our bodies and our individial disease state...even more so than our doctors.
cindy my daughter is on 200 mg a day of topamax only for 10 daysnow nad she had a seizure this morning how long before you got control over yours and how long did ita take the doc to put you on 300 mg a day ?

thanks

Topamax is a problem waiting to happen. I've been battling my seizure disorder for over 35 years and have been on most meds. Topamax was a total failure and gave me nothing but terrible side effects.

Find the right neurologist. It's no easy task, and you can't believe or trust many MDs. Gaining experience in treating your epilepsy can result in frustration. Not everyone is blessed with persistence and parents that stick by them, but you still can't give up.

i am sorry you cant cope with topamax i find it works for me,i also take dilatin with it and together they work fine.i sometimes find that when i get stressed or overtired that the meds really have to battle to stay on top then its time to back off and remember that i am an epileptic and need to rely on my doctor and listen to his advice.

I've been taking Topamax for 10 months. I take 200 mg a day. I have not had a seizure since taking it. If I remember to take it at the same time of day it also takes care of my migraine headaches. The only problem I have is that it affects my memory. I keep a journal, read more and try and do as many brain exercises as possible to keep my mind going. My neurologist suggested I try Keppra 1000 mg - 2000 mg a day (depending on wether or not I had any seizure activity) because the side effects for memory loss weren't as great. He said that it was likely that I would have seizures during the transition, which would take 2 weeks. After researching Keppra and its side effects and going with what I already know about Topamax, we decided that Topamax was best for me. It's not perfect, but it does the job. I'll take a memory lapse over another hospital stay any day.
As far as it being a miracle weight loss drug, I did lose a few pounds, maybe 10 or 15 total, but it's not something that happens for everyone. My cousin takes it for migraines and she gained weight. It's different for different folks.
Good luck to every here. I hope you find the right "juice" for you.:)

I have grand maul seizures and was put on 600mg of dilantin that was starting to become quite uneffective. So my Neurologist put me on about 3 other drugs that were making me basically act like I was drunk all the time. I got fired from a job and with todays economy how many companies want to hire someone with epilepsy. I had to apply for SSI and luckily was approved for it.
I found that Topamax works quite well and controls my seizures. I lose weight (its like legal speed) and I find that if I take some Mens vitamins along with my medication in the morning except for on occasions.
I just wish I could get approval for an rx for marijuana as well. When I used to smoke I never had any problems with seizures.

Topamax main use has always been to treat children and adults with their seizures problems. However, there is a debate about its safety especially on pregnant women because a lot have reported that Topamax use is synonymous to giving birth to children with cleft palate. In fact, this has resulted to a number of cleft palate lawsuits which you can read more from this internet site that I found:
