I have had a chronic cough for little over a year. My Doctor and emergency room doctors insisted I take cough syrup as if I had a cold. I coughed so bad I would wet my self. I was informed yesterday that I have emphysema.in moderate stages, but they refuse to give me oxygen. I have to sleep at night with a least 7 pillows just to breath. I'm tired of suffering and don't want to live like this anymore.

I take Codeine tablets which both suppress my cough and ease the soreness in my chest and stomach caused by the coughing.

Some cough syrups are designed to MAKE you cough, so as to help bring up the mucus and relieve the chest congestion but, while they have their place, sometimes you just want a break from the constant coughing.
