I am 25 and was recently diagnosed with diverticuitis. I had a bad inflammation but I have recovered. Still have little flare ups every now and then but they go away. Before this all happened I was weight lifting a lot. Will I still be able to weight lift even though I have diverticulitis? I am not referring to body building. Just lifting heavy enough to get at least 8-10 reps with a decent struggle, not enough to hurt your self obviously.

I can't think of any reason that it would be bad for you, except during an attack, but maybe someone else can.

Hi, I am 59-yrs old and had my first and only attack in July. I lift weights at the gym on a daily basis and so far have not experienced any recurrences. I too wondered if compressing the abdomen during weight lifting as you strain might irritate the colon. I don't have a definitive answer but, I have lightened up on my weights instead opting for more reps and perhaps less strain. I feel good, and have had some slight irritation of the colon from time to time, but nothing which hurts. My irritation doesn't seem to be related to weight lifting, and seems to coincide more with diet, mainly eating too much in terms of volume which probably irritates my colon more than anything. Watch out for Thanksgiving and Christmas, eat small portions...by the way, yoga seems to help with the colon as it massages the internal organs gently. Mike in NJ

Hi Basketball,everyone is different -some people experience pain after lifting thigs: some don't.

There are no hard and fast rules. I would tend to think that if it hurts, then you shouldn't be doing it -if you don't get any pain, then I'm sure it's fine.
