This is for men or women who spouses have had related issues. I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago in the ER with the diverticulitis. The doctor states this has been building for several years. Although this was my first attack, four days later I was back at the ER with a 5 day hospital stay for a perforated bowel. The area “walled itself off” and I was told I dodged a bullet. During that time I can only compare the pain of what it must be like to be impaled on large stick into ones rectum up through the bladder. There is still fair amount of pressure in the rectum and around my bladder. Is this normal during this “resting” period? The pain was unbearable the first 5 days after the rupture and has lessened with some intermittent pain. The surgeon states he is pleased with my progress and will be resection in the next four weeks. Now for the “male part” issue I am having. I have suffered from ED for about a year, thinking this was due to high blood pressure, diabetes or the kidney stones. Although the doctors assure me my case for all of this issues were mild and ED and could not be explained. Since I started feeling better, now the erections are coming too frequently , I‘m 44 (its like I’m a teenager---painful at night-- too often) While I am happy happy about this new development (who wouldn‘t), it is not without its curse. Being male of course, waste not, want not; when I ejaculated the pain was comparable to when the bowel perforated and I almost passed out from the pain. Could all of this be because the inflammation of the bowel is better, but the diseased portion is somewhere near the bladder/ prostrate? I should also mention that when the perforation happened I had to have a Foley cath until just before I left the hospital. Urination was immediately impossible and at times still difficult. I am not sure what to think. Does any other men have even a portion of these types of issue. All I have been told is this disease can sometimes damage the bladder and for me to watch for signs

Well, I'll give this one a shot. It sounds like you certainly dodged the bullet alright, I can certainly understand the pain. With me, it felt more like a grenade went off internally... Unbelievable pain, nothing like I've ever experienced before. I had surgery 6 months ago, took out 12 inches of sigmoid and good as new now. I never had a perforation though. As for the ED issue, the only thing I can think of, is the swelling must have been so great with your infection, that the colon could conceivably push on your bladder which in turn could put pressure on the prostate, which might explain the erection. The pain might be from the prostate being under pressure for so long, that when it contracted it hurt like hell...I dont really know, just a theory. I'm an Engineer Jim, not a Doctor...!! Check out this link for a little anatomy lesson, see the proximity of the prostate to the colon/rectum? It's possible. http://images.google.com/imgres... |

I'm female, and had no perforation. But I have had severe bladder pain with this. In fact my last two bouts of DV started with bladder pain. The very diseased part of my colon was the 2 inches attached to the rectum. My surgeon said it was so scarred that it was as hard as a pipe, not flexible as a colon normally is. I had my surgery in mid July, and had bladder pain long after the colon felt normal. 11 weeks post-surgery, my bladder still hurts when emptying, though it is a milder pain these days.

My experience was pretty much as all of you have described.
I was 56 when I had my surgery. The doc wanted to do it laproscopically so he had a urologist to insert lighted stints so he could see the tubes from my kidneys to my bladder to avoid cutting them. Anyway, the proceedure to insert the stints was suppose to be about 15 minutes ..... it took over an hour. Unfortunately the doc had to open me up anyway (zipper style). And, I got a bladder infection from all the gouging.... passed a lot of blood. I spent 9 days in the hospital and almost 6 months getting close to a normal life. And, actually, I was not normal for a year as far as overall strength. During that time, an erection was not a problem, but urnation was difficult and sort of painful at my prostrate. I continued to have pain for about a year in my bladder/prostrate area. It gradually went away. So, I attributed it to the cath! My colon is now 18 inches shorter and works fine! Diet is important as well as plenty of water! |
