My doctor suspects I have diverticulitis as I had a an extremely painful attack two days ago. Sharp pain in my lower right stomach, on codeine for pain and spent the entire day writhing on the couch waiting for it to subside. Tonight the pain is almost gone. Blood tests showed high inflammation and low(normal) white blood count, so probably not appendicitis.

I also had similar pain about 5 months ago which cleared up after pain killers. I am seeing the doctor again tomorrow and probably will be sent for further scans to find out exactly whats wrong.

I am slightly nervous. I am 30 year old male and live in Australia. What are the chances that I will need surgery assuming this is diverticulitis? What about chances of needing a colostomy?

I have colon cancer in Dec/2007. Surgery was done in Jun/2008. It removed 8 of the transverse colon. I have Chemotherapy for 6 months after the surgery. I had regained 50% of my physical strength but the nerves on my toes have not recovered yet. I had a occasional minor pain on the right side of the abdominal area and blood in the stool most of the time. I had colonoscopy 5 times after the surgery. The doctor said I had colitis in the area where the colon was reconnected. He suggested a second surgery to remove the section that had problem. I had the 2nd surgery done just before xmas. I have blood in the stool ever since the surgery. The amount is easily visible and stain the toilet water. Im concerned that I will just end-up with colitis again. Although I have weighted the pros and cons of having the second surgery, I kind of regretted that I had the surgery for the pain and uncertainty that I had to go through. I feel that I had not done enough research.

Ryan, only about 75 percent of people who get diverticulitis ever have any complications and of the 25 percent left, less than half will need surgery -and of those who have surgery only a small number end up with a permanent colostomy.

Work out your chances from that!!!

Seriously - it all depends on how severe your attacks are -they don't seem very bad at the moment -severe attacks usually mean extreme pain, hospitalisations, abscesses, perforations, blockages etc...

So I wouldn't start panicking yet :)

Glenda, I know someone who was in perpetual pain from toothache, the dentist just wanted to drain the absess and give her antibiotics. She said it had been going on for too long and wanted the tooth pulled, and sat in the surgery until someone had to do something about it. So maybe, don't go anywhere, just sit in the place you were sent to and don't move until someone has to do something about it. Sounds like you are going to too many places, but getting nowhere.

thats exactly whats going on this one sends me to that one and so on,the only one that realy see's how sick i realy am is the new gi doc. but he came in after all the sugerys, and seems to think the pain is complications from all the surgerys.he tried to put me in hospital 2 times and the surgeon came to er and said there was no need, and told me to go to primary with the papers to see pain clinic,so i gave them to them last week and they never called so went today and now they say cant go there till i have MRI,mean while im down there crying in pain and primary tells me no refill on pain meds go to er, cant believe this i told them i was sent from er its getting really crazy. going in the am to pick up papers for MRI, and who knows how long thats going to take to get appt.i have tried to go to another primary but they say they cant get involed with what the surgeon has done,i understand that but now they all have droped me on this pain clinic that i havent even been to yet.needless to say i am a emotional wreck, and in the worse pain ever.see what tomorrow brings.my faith in the medical system i have been dealing with is gone, very lost at this time but gotta keep fighting even though i feel like giving up.thanks to all out there this is my only way to at least talk about this as my family has heard it all for many years.

When I was in the hospital, there where many Doctor's I did not know. All giving opinions, about me. None of the prognises panned out. But I got a bill from each one of them. After finally getting home, there was a half foot of bills. I was in no condition to respond, pay and talk to anyone. In fact my voice was a squeek, I'm a Tenor/Baritone.
So what I did was to redirect these providers to the hospital. This all should have been taken care from there.
I had alway's been lean, but 55 lb's less was devasting.
You are going to have too fight. Don't like saying this to you all. But do what you have too do, never give up. I didn't, and won't. Keep working on yourselves.

thats so true you have al these docs. that say this and that and none of it helps your condition, but there is always a bill that follows just for them to tell you to go to someone else,it turns in to a tail spin of emotion, i feel like im on a wild goose chase to save my life,i will keep fighting because that is human nature to survive, but some days are pretty hard.i have also lost 40lbs and look like a shell of who i once was thats the sad part, when these docs. look at me cant they see me? idk just trying to make it through another day good luck out there.

It has been 21 months since my lap surgery. I had 8 inches of my colon removed due to diverticulitis. I am for the most part pain free, but what to eat still eludes me. As some have said "welcome to your new normal". Sure it is frustrating not being sure of what foods will not turn on you and the gas and multiple trips to the bathroom on most days is an inconvience. But the no pain I LOVE !!! For the smelly gas I take a pepto with every meal. I also take a beano and lactaid pill. I do still have painless gas but the pepto for some reason gets rid of the smell. A lot of us who have had this surgery seem to become lactose intolerant for about six months thus the lactaid pill. I still do take one every time I eat dairy since I seem to be one of the few where this problem did not go away. It would be nice if there was a solution to all our new diet problems, and bowel problems. Hope the few things that have helped me can help someone else. I wish you all success on finding you magic bullett.
Thanks Linda, I too am lactose intolerant - but had learned of it prior to my surgery; now it's more severe.(I used to be able to tolerate some dairy with lactaid pills, now, not at all). I just hate popping all these pills when I eat. ie: beano, gasx etc., but I will try the Pepto with my meals to see how that works. I don't mind a little tooting here and there, but if Pepto helps control the smell, I will be forever in your gratitude, and so will my family! I sometimes find charcoal pills work with a meal. Good luck and thanks for input!

I have had 2 sigmoid resections due to diverticulitis. Less than a year after the last resection, I began experiencing pain on the left side, lower back, and pain when having sex. The pain reminds me of having a diverticulitis attack. The doctors have performed two ct scans and a colonoscopy and find nothing. Has anyone else experienced these problems and what if any treatment did you receive?

I have the same issues... I am on Tramadol for the pain and Valium for the anxiety. I also have pain during sex. My doc says it is scar tissue and nerve damage. It's been 10 months since I had a foot of my sigmoid colon removed. My colon was attached to my abdominal wall and an old hysterectomy scar. "They" say it should get better with "time". I've been to a a GI doc, nothing worked there, my colon surgeon has pretty much washed his hands of me, but my primary care doc is who I see now and she does alot of research for me. All I can say to everyone is that we are here for eachother and to hang in there. This forum has been a God send to me I would have been able to get through this last 10 months if it wasn't for all of you!!!!

i wish there was something i could tell you that would help, i too have been suffering since 2005, it has been almost the same for me, but have you been told anything at all ? did you find out if you have diverticulitis,or any other bowel problems.it took me almost 5 yrs to find out i had diver,i keeped going to the same hospital, and they keep telling me nothing was wrong.when i was down to 98lbs in 2009 i went to a different hospital and they found that i was in fact very ill, i was septic the holes from the diverticulitis was making the waist leak into my body, they did surgery the next morning 6ft,of my colon was removed, not saying this is your case but, from me having to wait so long i became very ill, with in 6months it was back and again they made me wait saying nothing was wrong,in may of 2009 i had my 2nd resection,another3 or 4 feet they never told me how much but said i only had about 6inches of my colon left, the pain never left since 05 i was in pain always 12weeks after this i had hernia repair after telling them for 12 weeks that i was in terrible pain daily, only to end up with another hernia repair 12 weeks later, this has been going on like a cycle,i have terrible pain for so long and many er visit than they find something all the sudden, im not trying to scare you but what im saying is go some where else if you can,i have no choice i have to be in state program no insurance, but if you have to go to different hospitals till you get some kind of answer because it sounds like diverticulitis, deffenitly some kind of bowel trouble. so plz from someone who has been through and still going through pure hell dont wait,it can be very dangerous. if you cant get help one place go somewhere else.im still suffering i think do to all the waiting they have put me through, good luck and let me know how you are doing.

its me glenda agin i have also never heard of that medicine you say he gave and would be very careful befor you use it do your research, this doctor does not seem to be in your best interest, my first gi i was with for 4yrs and kept telling me nothing was wrong,i had all the same things going on pain mostly in the left side always hurting like someone had stabd me with hot knife, lower abbs, hurt so bad sometime i could not even stand up low grade fever, weight loss, the pain is sometimes so bad you feel like your going to die, we have all been through it but sounds like you have not yet been diagnosed ,and need to find some help, at least most of us know what we are dealing with it must be scary for you not knowing, good luck and stay in touch with us it dose help.

i too have had 2 resections and 2 hernia repairs the last 3 have been in a 7 month time span, every since my first resectoin in 09 i have had terrible pain when ever i have sex witch puts a real damper on not only my love life buy my whole relation ship in general i have been with my husband for 26yrs so i guess thats the only thing that has kept us together,it has been very hard to make him understand how painful it is ,you really cant explain it unless you have been there.i always take a hot bath before and after just to help with the pain a little but because of the pain your really not interested in it all that much, witch is hard on your spouse.because i have never really got any straight answers on any of this but do feel your pain, for the longest time i thought i was having femal problems because it was so painful, but they seem to not see anything wrong in that department either, but maybe someone else out there can shed some light on this if they know anything that could help, i think we both would be greatful.

going for my MRI in the am, they say i have to get one before i can go to pain clinic, thats fine with me but in the mean time they never refilled my meds none of them no pain meds no protonix, no bentyl, nothing they wont even let me see my primary at the clinic so i have been in full blown pain since i got back from ER on the tenth, this is very troubling i dont understand how they can just not keep up with whats going on after there the ones who operated on me 3 times in 7 months, they say go to ER but ER sent me here i tell them and they just say go back to er and er says go to clinic ,its like a sick joke i ask for the supervisers number of the clinic and the lady at the front desk refused to give it to me i cant believe how badly we are treated by some of these docs. and staff.now all i can do is hope the MRI shows something that is the reason for all this pain,be back after mri, wish me luck.
