I'm at my wits end... I was under the impression my issues were normal! My surgery was in 2005. I have 6 inches of large intestines remaining. I was re-routed to prevent having a bag. I was in adults diapers for two years-again being told this was normal. I have yet to have solid stool since, and I have not been above 99lbs since 6months post-op. I went into surgery at 157 lbs looking full term to deliver a child. I literally have 10-15 BM's a day, and I have to run a couple of times if my husband and I go out for dinner. I think I will be finding a new doctor . Yes, this was an emergency life saving procedure for which I am thankful. Surely something can be done to help my situation. It is almost 2:00 AM here, and I am awake due to visiting John.. AKA the toilet- where I have spent most of my time for 8 and a half years.
Hi Lori
If I were you, I would definitely seek the opinion of another colorectal specialist. My Dr told me I would lead a normal life within a year, and that the first 3 months are the worst. 8 and 1/2 years is a long time to deal with this. Maybe your situation is unique, and there were other issues when you had the surgery, but if you want some answers, go see another Dr. Let us know how you do.

So glad you are doing well. I am 1 month post op, and doing ok. For the last week or so, I have had normal bm's. I did have more in the weeks right after my surgery, but it has leveled off, and I usually go about twice a day now. I'm able to do more too, and don't get so tired anymore. I haven't added too much fiber to my diet yet, because it seems to cause a lot of gas. I usually try it, and if it doesn't work, I remember not to eat it again, for a while. I take probiotics every day, and 1 stool softener. Seems to be working. I also drink Aloe Vera juice. I try to stay away from too much gluten, as it seems to irritate my intestines. I think it's a slow process getting back to eating what you like. I so crave an Italian cannoli.

Lori I agree, I just had a sigmoidoscopy which shows I have lymphocytic colitis, have you had a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy since your procedure? You could have some form of inflammation like I do, please go get rechecked and be persistent. I was, they were saying it's normal healing to have all this pain, well hell no it wasn't. I have switched doctors as of last week.

Hi all. I'm new to this forum. I had emergency bowel cancer surgery and was lucky that lymph nodes ok and no spreading. About 3 months ago. My bm are softish and about 1 or 2 daily. No bag needed. The problem is that I get a sharp pulling at the top of my scar now which wasn't there before. I guess it's muscular or the scar complaining. Only certain movements which I am learning to avoid. I thought by now that everything would be back to normal? I used to be quite active but am quite limited now. Anyone else with the same complaint? Or advice? I suppose I'll just have to wait and see. I am putting on some weight and wondered if the extra bulge was pushing out the scar. I enjoy eating now. About 4 kg since the op. 78 to 82 kg or so. Lost a lot of weight after the op, the surgeon said the back up was about 4/5 litres!

Hey John, welcome! I would say the scar is still healing. Gentle exercise such as walking should keep the muscles flexible. Perhaps a little massage on that area when you are resting? If it gets worse, see doctor.
Stay healthy, God bless.

5 yrs out of three stomach surgeries. What started it was increasing diarrheal. Then totally uncontrollable. I retired. Then got deathly ill. Diverticullis. Three surges I am fine except gas and diarrhea hand pain. Is that normal?

Thanks Elizabeth. Saw Dr. today and after prodding he couldn't find any bumps etc. so will have CRP and full bloods to check for inflammation. It was a bit tender and today after a hefty cough there was a sort of tearing feeling which I hope was any adhesion freeing itself. Quite sore now so I watched NZ v India in cricket most of the day! We are doing surprisingly well. Bring on Aus! Maybe not. Thanks again.

Question.... I had my resection 11/2/2012 a bit over a year now...I had severe Diverticulitus took out right at 18- 24 inches the Dr told me. right before surgery I quit smoking and then recovery I stayed home until Jan 2, 2013 then back to work since. they started with the easy way 3 small incisions, but the colon didn't like the staples and they had to cut me so I have the straight line down the middle surgery was about 8 hrs. But I have also gained about 20 lbs in the past year or so,. maly question is...

I have recovered from the Craziness as I call it. But now I am having constipation BAD.... I take Miralax sometimes to help out not the full dosage or I would not be able to leave the house. I feel so Bloated, Full and look like I am about to go into labor again.

Does anyone else have issues of this nature? Miralax? Enema Bag? I don't want to push it, haven't tried an Enema Bag But the old saying "you are full of it" is exactly how I feel.

Thanks
John

All the blood test results normal including the CRP (I think it is) for any inflammation. Not so sore today so hopefully the 'giving way feeling' was what was needed to sort out any adhesions. Maybe back to work soon at last! Be positive everyone! And don't be afraid to ask questions!
