I "think" I am mentally prepared for tomorrow but am having moments of panic. My concerns are: staples in the colon, getting sick from the pain meds, what is normal or common and what is not, get lap but not mentally ready for open if it comes to that, just feeling at a loss right now. Too many things to go wrong and I have no control over any of it.

Hi Riley. I'm sure there are a lot of veterans on here that can offer better advice but I thought I would post because I know what youre feeling as my surgery is only a week away. I dont know if you are a person of faith, but I find praying and trusting God on a good outcome helps me more than anything. Also playing uplifting music or watching funny movies gets my.mind off of the what ifs. Place healthy pictures of yourself around and pictures of places you would like to go as soon as you heal. The staple issue doesnt sound right but I had staples for my c-section and it healed beautifully. Our bodies are amazing in their healing properties!

I just got home from my colon resection today, 10 inches removed due to recurrent diverticulitis. Mine was open and everything seemed to go as planned. I am also very panicky and feared everything you mention. First of all, I wasn't sick at all from the pain meds, the pain was very manageable with the pain pump, I didn't even have to use it very much. I have a large incision but no worse than with my hysterectomy. They sent me home with prescription for pain meds that I didn't even stop to get filled. Don't think I will need it. I was on clear liquids from the day after surgery (Feb 6) till yesterday (Feb 9). If you are like me, you won't be hungry anyway. After things start moving, you will be allowed to have regular food. Hope this helps you. The anticipation is worse than the actual surgery. Hope all goes well for you.

Riley on the staples they leave in you this is a small snippet about then

As the staples are made of medicated thread, you can have peace of mind that they arenít going to cause you any harm. With regards to discomfort, this cannot be helped unless you seek medical attention. However, it is best to keep in mind that the dissolvable staples have been created to prevent future complications

I hope all goes well for you and God Bless
and Teddy Bear Hugs to you

Larry

P.S. I had the staples on my right side colon resection and they are not bothering me
