Colonscopy Prep Questions

Larry,

I have found that colonoscopies vary from dr to dr as far as the sedation goes. I was fully awake during one and watched the whole thing on the video screen with a play by play by the doctor. Really no pain though. Another, I was sort of in la la land but certainly awake--no TV this time and the third time just prior to my surgery in Janauary, I was out to the world. Interestingly though, this one is where I had the most trouble and it was only after the procedure and I could not do the obligatory gas passage. Even after getting up and walking around for a good half of an hour it would not pass. In one of the funnier moments of all this the dr decided to initiate a release by using some kind of funnel device. Just as he was about to do it, to his great surprise and shock, I was able to release. His face and subsequent comment was priceless--"it must have been the fear of me inserting this that caused that". Really folks there is nothing to fear in having the colonoscopy. Keep your sense of humor about it. If you can deal with the prep, you are just about all the way home!

Flushible wet wipes sure help! I have had several procedures this is my first prep with Miramax. It's a little slower to start than the others have been in the past.

Well I came upon this thread as I was searching to see when I might start to run to the bathroom. I am at the moment drinking my second bottle of apple juice which with the miralax has no taste at all. Not sure on ages of anyone in this thread but I hate having to have this procedure at only 34. Family history of colon cancer as well as bleeding ulcers and stomach cancer. They are doing both procedures tomorrow afternoon so here's to hoping for a good turn out.

I'm sitting on the pot right now99 after the 4 Dulcolax tabs at 3 pm and started the Miralax Gatorade cocktails at 5. 8 oz every 20 minutes. Started to work at 6 pm. Crazy running to the kitchen, back to the bathroom. I think there's nothing left in there but gatorade.
This prep is so much better than the last time 10 years ago. But when will it STOP????!!!
I'd like to get some sleep for my 730 am 'scope!

Bob,

About four hours after you start drinking the Gatorade.

Sorry, Bob. I meant to say about four hours AFTER the prep starts working. Mine started working at about 7 pm and was done at around 11 pm...both times, give or take 1/2 hour or so.

Hope all goes well for you today and that you will receive good news.

Hello everyone,
They put me on a three day liquid diet with magnesium citrate and ducolax. Seemed pretty strange to me to be on a three day liquid diet when the norm is a day. Nurse said each doctor is different. I'm on my second day of liquids and laxatives not fun. I only take one pill of the ducolax in the morning and drink a 10 fl oz bottle of the magnesium citrate mixed with about 12 fl oz of Gatorade.

Ed , I had to do the same 3 day prep as well. I had a severe stricture and the doctor said it was safer for me to do it like that than all in one go because it may have caused another perforation with the pressure..

I am doing my 4 Dulcolax/Miralax prep tomorrow for my scope on Tuesday. I am supposed to drink 64 oz. clear liquid with 238 g Miralx but I only bought 119 g and 32 oz Gatorade - hope that is enough to work! I have crohn's disease & have had all but about 1 1/2 foot of intestine removede (several bowel resections) so I can't imagine that I need all that prep. The prep caused me stress but not the test. I have never used this prep before so we will see.

"Enjoying" my prep as I wait to call it a night. Took 4 Dulcolax at 3 p.m. And started Gatorade with Miralax at 5 pm. One 8 ounce glass every 15 minutes. Test was scheduled a week out. The nurse and several friends recommended light meals, soup, etc. for the week until the day before and the just liquids today. I don't know why I dreaded this part so and put off the test for years because of my fear. Surrounded by my Kindle and iPad. I have had a worse time jus with a stomach bug. No cramps at all. Also, having an endoscopy tomorrow. Wonder if they'll meet in the middle?

I took three Ducolox at 4:00 and followed in two hours by the Miralax mixed with 64 oz of Grape flavored Gatorade. It tasted just fine to me. No grit or anything unpleasant. I am supposed to drink the other bottle of Gatorade before bedtime and I'm going like crazy all ready. I think I'm going to be up all night long.

Strange... I only had to drink one 64-oz bottle of Gatorade mixed with Miralax and no second bottle of Gatorade. I was able to go to sleep by 11:30 pm that night.

Good luck to you, Sharon!

Oh I'm sorry Deb, I did mean that I only had two 32 oz bottles of Gatorade. I drank the first bottle at six pm and am suppose to drink the other at midnight. So that is a total of 64 oz. I don't know why my doc insists on splitting up the prep. I have had a colonoscopy before but wasn't drinking anything that late at night. I'm not real happy about that.

Colonoscopy tomorrow at 2:00pm. Took first 2 dulcolax at 10am this morning. Next 2 at 3pm. At 6pm tonight 32oz of powerade with half bottle of miralax every 15 minutes for an hour. It's been 10 hrs since the prep began and no BM except for normal BM this morning before I started the prep. I've been drinking water, white grape juice and organic chicken broth all day. Urinating a lot and feel really full but no BM. This is troubling me. Have the Final part of the prep at 8:00am tomorrow...drinking last 32oz with miralax again. Any advice? Help! I feel like I'm going to explode. I'm a tiny woman at 110 lbs and figured I'd have had a BM by now.

I am FINALLY having the results of all this stuff I drank at 6:00 AM this morning! I am doing the "same day prep", due to a mid-day colonoscopy, which started with a 5:00 AM wakeup to take 4 Dulcolax tablets. After about an hour's more sleep, up again to mix up 64 oz. Orange Gatoraid with a whole bottle of the Miralax (I used the store-brand from Walgreens, though). Proceeded to drink each of my glasses every 10-15 minutes, finished in about an hour and 15 minutes. After going back to bed and sleeping on-and-off/getting up to urinate for another 3 hours or so, I got up wondering what the "hold-up" was, and came on here to see what ya'll had to say about this whole thing. While reading about everyone's experiences, things FINALLY started to "progress"!! YAAYY!! I need to leave for this procedure in about an hour and a half, so I hope this doesn't take too long!
