Hello. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis around 11 years ago. I am now 35 years old and I am experiencing my worst attack I've had since diagnosed. I don't get attacks that often Ive had about 5 attacks since diagnosed. This current one has been the worst and first time I had to be hospitalized. Been sick now for 7 days with mild discomfort. Discomfort area is now on my upper abdomen area instead of the usual spot on the lower right side. This is a first and was wondering if any body else experienced discomfort and bloattnes in that area?

Hi Edgar,
I have had pain on my right side, but I think more people on the forum have complained of pain on the left side. Also I've heard upper and lower abdomen.
You say you were hospitalized so that means you've had antibiotics. I am hoping they told you to go on a low fiber diet for up to a month or until your colon has a chance to do some healing. If you are having pain now it could be something like an abscess or most likely something you are eating, or you are eating to big of meals. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.

Hello Georgia
I am still in the hospital Dr. Just switched my diet from a clear liquid to liquid. I'm afraid to even eat the different liquid diet. Yes they have me on levaquin and something else I forgot the name of it i think is fragyl I didn't have that much pain but more of a soar feeling in my abdomen. I think what triggered my attack was corn. Thanks for your response.

Hi Edgar,

I get a lot of upper abdominal pain and bloating from the flagyl. I think you will feel better once you are done with the nasty antibiotics, which many of us agree sometimes gives worse symptoms than the disease.

I am 35, and I have been in alot of pain for 1 month now. The er doctor believes I have diverticulitis. I have been to the er 3 times. And I am just now getting a ct scan. I have lost 30 pounds in a month, I am scared to eat, because of the pain. The pain is in my upper stomach area. The pain is so bad, that you just want to die. after the pain subsides my stomach growls very loud. I have not gotten a gi scope or a colonosopy.

Hi Kay,
If you have Diverticulitis, a month is a long time to go without antibiotics to stop the infection. Hopefully you will get them soon. Until then the best way to help the pain is to go on a liquid diet for a few days then gradually start on a low fiber diet for a few weeks. Good luck and please get them to hurry with the scan so you can get the antibiotics. Good luck.

Ouch Kay! Well I am glad they are going to do a CT scan. That your pain is in the upper stomach is not a usual area for Diverticulitis pain to present but we all know so many exceptions.

Please keep us posted. Best of health to you!

I was diagnosed with this dreaded condition two years ago. After many prescriptions I decided self treatment was worth a go. A few days ago I bought a bottle of 'Good 'n' Natural' Slippery Elm Bark in Holland and Barrett. These are capsules, 1-2 with each meal and cost just over eight pounds for 100. My biggest problem was chronic inflamation flare-up after using the loo, which made me feel like death and I was unable to do anything or go anywhere,I just sat and cried for most of the day. These symptoms would continue until approx.5pm and this became a regular pattern. After two days of taking the capsules,I am having none of these symptons at all. I urge all of you sufferers to please give them a try - you have nothing to lose and relief from this horrible condition is everything.

Hi Jean, What do you mean by inflammation? Where is it located? Lately I have been having horrible episodes where it feels like someone has blown a balloon up inside my stomach/intestine area. Very uncomfortable. Is the Slippery Elm still working for you? Has anyone else tried it with success?

hello people I wanted to start 2013 trying to be positive but my condition is getting me down I was admitted to hospital june 2012 with initial pain temperature etc given IV antibiotics and painkillers. next was told suspected appendicitis or cyst on ovary or pelvic inflammatory disease after 3 days was told after my CT its actually diverticulitis. went back after 2 months for sigmoidoscopy(agony)at least confirming no sign of cancer and it is Diverticular disease.i had metronidazole again in October the first recurrence. I am terrified to eat and now it is back again- is it normal to go back for antibiotics or anti-inflammatories on a regular basis?? or do I go back to hospital??. the thing is Im already on Omeprazole having had GERD for years and had the gastric band op several years ago.I cant lie down flat I cant digest things most food is regurgitated several times due to the GERD and now my colon is damaged I feel like an animal not a person any advice???
