Considering how severe various forms of depression can be, this cannot but be a positive development, so that cognitive therapy is given only to those who need it, and others are given the therapy that is appropriate to them. At the same time, we need to consider closely what social and cultural factors lead some into depression in the first place, so that we ourselves can do something about them. Being kind and considerate generally and being attentive to those difficult people who react sharply to being ignored or slighted may contribute to a climate in which fewer individuals succumb to depression. Kindness doesn't cost anything and goes a long way.
