Taper off Effexor XR to minimize withdrawal symptoms

Mar 20, 2009 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Los Angeles Times

I have been on Effexor XR for the last seven years for depression. I decided to wean myself off it, since it wasn't a good mix with another drug.

My doctor has repeatedly warned me about abruptly going off effexor. After reading your experience, I know why. Sorry you had to go through that. I'm just about to wean off of it myself because of the price. I pay out of pocket and even though it's just gone generic, the XR hasn't gone generic and it costs a fortune.

You folks in the US get robbed for medication :( but at least your Doctor gave you the right advice .. consider a gradual taper and adjuct with something with a longer half life. I did the effexor cold turkey .. 10 days of hell followed by 3 months of misery!

Must Rank #1 for withdrawal closely followed by Paroxetine!

Good Luck

What these Pharmacueticals do with our health, it is unbelieveable. I am refraining from any types of medications. I have gotten so sick with side effects, and my heart condition on top of it. Now I have a friend, whose doctor failed , to perscripe the medicine for her and get the authorization to the insurance company in. I can not believe, what this poor women has gone through this week. She had to take off of work today. Cause, she could not concentrate. She is in tears. For my opinion, I want her off that stuff completley. I want her to live the rest of her life, in better health , than this bul nonse. Honestly, 3.5 million Americans, are known to be on any type of Anti Depressions. Honestly, we need to get them off. The Pharmaseutical companies, getting rich on us. But we are getting sicker by the minute. I hope we can get my friend back on it soon. I hate to see her suffer. Has any one of you, ever come completely off that stuff? For me Prozac and cymbalta were a killer. I took them and throw them into my Dr. face. I told him , eat them your self!

I've been tapering off for months. First from 112.5mg to 75mg then to 37.5mg (all extended release). Then switched to tablets (non extended release) 37.5. Then half of that. Then I resorted to cutting up doses into smaller and smaller pieces until I couldn't really cut them anymore. Finally I thought it was time to let go of that last amount (less than 1/8 of a tablet).

NOW the withdrawals are on strong! What the hell? I thought tapering would lessen the symptoms. I had tried quitting cold turkey before, that lasted ONE day!

Please Please tell me I am going to get through this. I am so tired of cutting up pills like a junkie!

multi vitamins, omega 3, vitamin b...what else is there to take the edge off this misery?

What are you symptoms now? If anxiety is an issue cut out the b vitamins maybe the muli too for awhile. If they are not anxiety related try going back to the dose you last felt stable and stay there a good while before you try again 4-6 wks to start. the lower doses are more difficult as the effects the high doses had on your liver changes how the body metabolized the drug now that you are at low doses the liver is metabolizing the drug differently or this is a commmon idea. What we do know for sure is tapering on lower doses are more problematic so do not suffer needlessly go back up. Take a break. When you feel better take a bit less. Some people file the pills with a nail file some crush and weigh some get liquid from a compounding pharmacy.

I have not seen any good reports about going every other day not yet. Switching to a new drug usually not so great either and usually done when a person has an adverse reactiont to the current drug or tolerance is reached on the current drug. Once the serotonin system is sent out of whach by antidepressants the only thing that consistanly brings it back on line is time. Your body knows what balance it is seeking and will find it in time. There are of course other substances that will cause a fluctuation in serotonin but that is putting you back to square one with having the system out of balance yet again. There is no easy way I know of wish there was.
A slow taper without skipping days is the ony thing I have seen that lessens the agony.

I've been defeated.
I went back to the full dose of Elevil.
I couldn't do it.
I curse these drugs.
If I could go back in time I'd never have taken any of them. I didn't really need them, now I do ??

I check pp all the time I have freinds there we seen each other thru some very bad times. I foolishly did not get other addresses from them as I was blindsided by the boot. I spend time there reading Darcys posts when a bad wave hits it helps me.
As for how I got banned you can read all about it at hm will get you the thread.

why I am not on pp here:
http://www.topix.com/forum/drug/effexor/TAA34...

ps
I find pp is good for the early withdrawal especialy as there is a lot to learn. Complaints came up as issues people further into withdrawal had were not always welcomed and there we had talked of starting a different site to address protracted withdrawal issues. May happen some day.

If you want to know their take on why I was kicked off ask them.
I agree it is a good site with a lot of information about antidepressants. Years of accumulated information.
It is searchable if there is anything specific you want to know.
