The intent of the article in the 09/07 Archives of General Psychiatry is to raise a valid question about the state of bipolar diagnosis in psychiatry. It is suspected that the bipolar disorder label is overused. This could be due, in part, to financial influences.

In psychiatry, insurance company payment requires diagnosis. Therefore, everybody is diagnosed.

Almost everybody walking into a psychiatrist's office expects a chemical solution. Psychiatrists helped to create that expectation and are quietly/constantly aware of it. No prescription = no return visit. Therefore, almost everybody walks out with a prescription.

Psychiatrists know that reimbursement falls as they spend more time with patients. Less time per patient provides robustly greater income. That's how the fees are structured. However ... less time per patient means there's less time to genuinely know a person. Less time leaves only chemical solutions for superficially acquainted patients.

Atop all this, pharmaceutical corporations need to sell product to make profit. The conduit to this money flows through physicians' pens. Hard sells by pretty drug reps with free lunches and financial perks lubricate the pens. Recent studies in Minnesota and Vermont show clearly that psychiatrists who receive the most pharm industry money write for the most antipsychotic medication ... often prescribed for ill tempered, poorly behaved "bipolar" children.

I've been on Effexor from only one week but am cautiously very optimistic. Prior to this I was on citalopram but still feeling very low and sleeping poorly, feeling like I needed to be in bed 12-16 hours a day. Now I am waking naturally after only 8 hours sleep and finding it much easier to concentrate at work. I can hardly believe it is working so quickly but I feel so much better. I've had no side effects.

Hey, parents, maybe you should check the sex offender registry and make sure the child psychiatrist who's drugging your kid for bipolar isn't on it.
