Yes! Exactly, Debbie! I am not opposed to genetics normally, and this is the first time I've ever had a problem. Hopefully it works for others, but not me:(
Your Walgreens pharmacist sounds absurd, Mike. Just call your doctor and they should have to write a prescription for medically necessary name brand, and the pharmacy will need to call your insurance for the early approval
In addition to everyone letting their doctor/pharmacist know there is a problem - spread the word to anyone you know that may take Effexor XR. Sometimes, you are given the generic and not told - you go home and are sick for a week, and it never even occurs you to check whether your Effexor XR is the same.

If enough people complain and get the word out, maybe they will be forced to pull this generic. The nastiness of this drug could send some people over the edge, if it is not releasing right. It has only been in the US market less than a month - how many people are going to have been hurt by this in 6 months or a year?! I personally am finding many new complaints every day at this point, and I suspect that these complaints will continue to grow exponentially!

Absolutely. There is clearly something not right with the generic form - either the capsule itself, the medication, or both! I hope people complain loud and early so they get the medication they need, and this gets pulled if there's a problem.

(apologies on "genetic" instead of "generic" earlier)

HI, I was switched to the generic effexor xr about 10 days ago. I have become very weep.joints and muscles are increasingly hurting, and about the 4th or 5th day I noticed my upper chest was hurting a bit. Today (saturday) I have the shakes for no apparent reason. My system is sensitive to changes and I also have food allergies and I'm sharing that this is not working for me. I haven't felt this anxietied or intense in YEARS. I do like the name brand Effeor XR and have been taking the 75 mg. in the summer and 150 in the winter. Going to have to call the doc on call and get the name brand.

I complained to my pharmacy. My p doc said she was sorry that I ended up with this drug. I guess she wasn't aware that she didn't reguest brand. Problem is I took it for about 5 days, now I am on the brand and it seems as the name brand Effexor xr is not working??? Does that make sense?

Yes, unfortunately, that does make sense. I cannot explain it, but know that once I tried to go off of Effexor XR (by cutting dosage in half, per dr recommendation)- I had horrible withdrawal, and had to go back up to my prior dosage - it never worked the same. One of the weird quirky things about Effexor XR.

I was taking 75 mg of Effexor XR and recently switched to the generic to save money. I have been taking it now for about 2.5 weeks and I do feel different! Mild headaches...and I never get headaches and just feel a little lethargic. I definitely want to switch back...paying a few hundred more a year is worth it to feel good!

When I first started taking Effexor XR years ago I took it at bedtime and had terrible nightmares. The nightmares went away and I had no more problems after I started taking it in the morning. Three weeks ago I switched to the generic and have gone back to feeling sad and useless. It's hard to sleep because of hallucinations.
It costs the same as the original Effexor, which doesn't right.

I started taking the generic Effexor on July 16th-I have had problems since then. Depression seems to be increasing, anger issues, anxiety heightened. Very tired most of the time.....Glad to have found this site. I was beginning to think it was just me-I have taken Effexor XR close to 15 years, and it has always worked beautifully. I plan on talking to my doctor tomorrow-to see about switching back to the regular Effexor XR. Thank you all for putting this information out there.

I've taken Effexor XR since 2003 with no problems until about 2 weeks ago when I was switched to the generic. I just called my doctor to get them to call the pharmacy and refill it with the brand name capsules again.
I too experienced headaches and fatigue within days of starting the generic. Now I am experiencing increasing anxiety and depression symptoms, and physical shaking.

WOW SO happy I found this page!!! I have been searching and searching about this!! I started the generic Effexor XR about 2 weeks ago. During this time I also had a throat infection, I have been going through some stressful times.(Didnt know if that was causing it) so I was REALLY worried about this med kicking out on me. I have been on name brand for about 8 years and I really don't need it crapping out on me right now. Well I was thinking I had myself so worried that this medication wasnÂ’t working right. But I know I have been feeling anxiety.

I did talk with my dr,(saw her when I just started getting sick with that throat infection) and I said I would give it a few days and see. Well I am off the antibiotics and I could feel more anxiety. SO I guess It's time to call the dr and the the "real" stuff!

I am having problems with the new Effexor XR generic from Teva and so is a friend of mine. Both of us used the brand name drug for years without any problems. The first week on the generic was fine for me, then I started getting more and more tired and run down during the day. In the second week I started waking up at 3am every night, my brain totally awake even though my body was still tired and I couldn't get back to sleep. I get up and work in my home office for a few hours until I get sleepy again. By mid day I'm a zombie looking for a coffee fix to stay awake and I am looking for chocolate during the day as well. My friend who got switched to the generic last week is yawning all day long and feels tired as well. It was only when we compared notes yesterday that both of us realized that the new generic might be causing our new symptoms. Thank you for this forum to share experiences and info. Calling my doc today to switch back to brand name Effexor XR. Hopefully the insurance company will cooperate!

Walgreens switched me on July 14th to the generic Effexor. It is causing me constant sweats and not working correctly. I am taking it for menopausal hot flashes. The generic is NOT working and I am working with my doc to get my insurance provider to cover. The generic IS NOT THE SAME!

Good to know it's just not my imagination. The generic effexor is messing me up also. I am feeling like I do when I miss my effexor...nauseated, a strange dizziness that someone described as "brain shivers" and some heightened anxiety.

I will contact my Dr. and have the brand name written up for me.

I would advise you to do so. The heightened anxiety is what I experienced and it was not pleasant.

My husband picked my medicine up yesterday and i just noticed that it was cheaper so i looked and the name of my prescription had Venlafaxine on it. Ewww, i was so mad. I have had a couple of bad experiences with generics in the past, I didn't even open the bag yet and i'm taking it back today. They didn't tell my husband they had changed my medicine or anything. They should at least call or let us know when we pick our prescription up thha they have a generic form and ASK if we would like to try it before they automatically assume we want it. After reading you guys comments, it made me so mad. The FDA or these pharmacies don't care about us at all and thats a fact.

I started the generic form of Effexor a couple of weeks ago and have increasingly felt worse every day. Terrible headache, what I call "brain zaps" - like electrical explosions inside my head, muscle aches. Haven't had these problems with regular Effexor. I talked to the pharmacist and I think he thought I was nuts. Have to have my doctor rewrite prescription to say "no generic".

Have you found any more information about this? I have been on Effexor XR for 10 years and July 1st I switched to the generic. In the past 3 weeks I have progressively gotten more moody, anxious, depressed, irritated etc. I finally told my husband that I think I may need to go back to psychiatrist. I havent felt like this since before Ive been on the effexor. I had attributed this to a few stressful inicidents in the past month, that maybe all of it was just getting to me. Then my husband asked how long I had been taking the gernic effexor, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought oh my god the timing is exactly when I started getting more and more stressed. I am going to call my Dr. first thing on Monday to get it switched, I just wonder how much my insurance company is going to fight it. If you have found any information please email me at [email protected] please put in eubject line EFFEXOR.

dizziness intermittently, and I seem to be more prone to anxiety in stressful situations than before. One day, I was so dizzy that I had to spend most of the day in bed, so later that day I took two of the brand-name Effexor XR (I took my normal dose of 225mg of the generic that morning) and my symptoms disappeared about 2 hours later. These are the same symptoms I had when I was trying to taper off the medication a few years ago. There is something wrong with this medication--it's either not strong enough, a formulation problem, or something wrong with the time release of the medication! I am on a mission to research this issue more on the internet. I am curious how long it will take for the symptoms to disappear?

I have been taking the generic from Effexor XR for two weeks and I have started feeling extremely depressed, tired all the time and I did not feel this way before taking the generic form of this drug. I had no choice but to buy the generic brand as my insurance would no longer pay for the brand name and I cannot pay $1500.00 for the prescription.
