Thanks for telling it like it is.
Anti-depressants are slightly better than placebo, according to studies, which isn't much bang for the buck. Often people have to try out several antidepressants before they get any effect. Frequently people feel ill and get gastro-intestinal problems from their expensive pharmaceutical experiments. Many people pack on the pounds from antidepressants which makes them feel worse and less likely to socialize and be active (Which really helps with depression). Much research shows that depression is helped more by exercise, social networking, activities, and changing your thoughts like they do in cognitive style therapies. These all alter our brain chemistry and they don't have the lousey side-effects. Plus no bill is waiting for us at the end of the month.
There's an excellent article in Chapter 4 of Dr. David Burns, MD "When Panic Attacks" (Placebo Nation) pgs 47 to 63 on the ineffectiveness of expensive antidepressants which anyone about to embark on such medications would do well to read.
Also here is mention of drug free approaches in a brief article on depression from Self-helpapedia.com :

I have tried them all, or almost all. None of them worked and I finally got down far enough to try working out with a pair of 40# weights along with meditation. Then I went ahead and paid off the $400 in missed appointment charges and now I feel much better.
Even dentists call you the day before an app. But did the shrink ever call? NOPE.
Read "ZEN MIND BEGINNERS MIND" for some real and to the point info on meditation. The results will be in direct praportion to the effort tried.

I have been on so many anti depressants it is ridiculous. Some of which had devestating side effects. I fell deeper and deeper into depression, fought it as hard as i could until in the end I had stopped eating or getting out of bed.
Frankly it is a hit or miss thing with the doctors they just keep on giving you different meds hoping one will work.
No progress happened with me until I finally took myself all meds, quit therapy and honestly found God and the power of prayer.
I also forced myself to get busy.
It has been uphill ever since
Not to say that meds don't work for some I am sure they so but for others like me they weren't the answer
