The VA has shown that they have no control, no training and no treatment for PTSD. Go to a therapist, tell them your story, relive the horrors, and then they tell you to live in the 'real world' and there is no threat to reliving the horrors of war. Gang bangers, murders, no jobs, urban plight, and poor training at the VA. PTSD is a severe reality and it brought on by many factors and training in this field needs to improve to understand what happens in war and how to 'adjust' to the real world and hope the horrors don't come back, BUT it is not that easy! It is all psychological science that the VA has no clue about.'Taking one day at a time' is not the key here. Surviving what is locked up in the brain when you have seen the horrors of war, and to live in the real world is tough enough with divorce, mistrust, govt corruption, budget cuts and politics.
Give them men and women something to believe in once again and to be proud of what we once used to stand for would be a start. We once had a flag that meant something and NOW it only means it drapes the coffins of the dead.

LIES! LIES! LIES! This is the same crap that my generation heard when they went to the VA for help. They VA is not about taking care of veterans, it is about taking care of itself. Each VA Medical Center is its own little kingdom with the Director at the helm. These Directors surround themselves with YES people whose only function in life is to protect the Director's behind. Sadly, the VA system is "last chance" healthcare for too many veterans who become Guiena Pigs for the affiliated Medical Schools that are joined with every VA Medical Center. A friend went to a VA Medical Center that had a "teaching University" attached. There were complications from his surgery and he wanted to talk with the Surgeon. The VA Staff contacted the Physician of record who was a foreign born doctor with a limited grasp of the English language. It was later determined that the surgery was completed by a resident and the "physician of record" was not even on duty that day. Fortunely, my friend recovered completely but he spent over a year in theraphy for something that he was initially told should have been resolved in less than 60 days.

Tired of being poorly treated by the VA? DEMAND that your VA healthcare card be usable at any healthcare provider of YOUR Choice. That's inside or OUTSIDE the VA Medical Center Care system. The VA Healthcare system will either improve or fade away from lack of use by our veterans who deserve teh BEST CARE AVAILABLE, not the last chance medicine they are forced to endure now.

I've been on Effexor from only one week but am cautiously very optimistic. Prior to this I was on citalopram but still feeling very low and sleeping poorly, feeling like I needed to be in bed 12-16 hours a day. Now I am waking naturally after only 8 hours sleep and finding it much easier to concentrate at work. I can hardly believe it is working so quickly but I feel so much better. I've had no side effects.
