Dentists should be required to inform patients about facial collapse and all the other challenges they are going to be facing as a person without any teeth. I would not wish full dentures upon even my worst enemy. People who wear full dentures face enormous challenges, a shortened life, and all kinds of issues they could never have imagined. Dentists are not warning people! The people posting on this dental forum do not represent how the average full denture wearer feels!

my dentist warned me of ALL the challenges i have suffered and many that i have not.
as like most of us you are commenting from personal experience which is fine, thats what we are here for. its good and benificial to hear ALL sides of the stories so we get a balanced view.
where do you get your FACTS to say we live a shortened life just because we wear denures? because i for one cannot find any proof/statistics to back this comment up?
YES we face enormous challenges but in alot of us with a good dentist and good advice we can overcome them.
wearing dentures is in my opinion similar to a disability such as someone wearing a prothesis limb. with good advice and management and yes some life changes we can still do what people with teeth can do, we may have to do it slightly different but we can do it.
if you can save the teeth great, if you have other options take them, if like me you cant then get the dentures and with a good dentist and good advice you will live a LONG and healthy life.
i do feel people posting on this forum DO represent the average full denture wearer. otherwise surely logic says there would be more people saying things such as you do instead of the other way on. its a sad fact that we always hear more of the negative sides and bad things than good, look at the news!
i do feel very sorry for you steve and im sure there are many people who feel the same. im guessing at the very least in this case your a 'the glass is half empty' kind of guy. i also think as well as seeing a DECENT dentist you may also be better off seeing a doctor or someone as you sound like your suffering from depression resulting from your dentures/loss of teeth. i feel more than anything you need good fitting dentures, good advice on how to adapt to them and some help to see life with dentures in a different light.
when i first made the decision to have dentures and got them i suffered from a massive low self esteem/self worth etc, but having re evaluated things ive picked myself up. im now only looking at the positives and although im not an amazing beauty etc vanity and lack of pain played a big part in feeling better. i also did think 'oh my god i still cant eat an apple and a snickers and chewing gum' i adapted, i chop up an apple, i can eat a snickers, and from advice on here ive found i can eat chewing gum.
i also thought 'christ i cannot do sports or kissing incase they fall out or he can tell. good fixident (i carry a tube in bag just incase although never had to use it) and no he couldnt tell the difference in kissing except now i no longer suffer from bad breath due to bad gums and teeth.
i think the title of this thread should read, im depressed, cant find ways to deal with my life changes so i feel full dentures were the wrong choice for you.
we are hear to help and be helped, at least i am. tell us your problems/worries etc and the ones who overcame them will offer good advice on overcoming them.

Note to lori - You are simply wrong. Millions of people regret having their teeth extracted and being fitted with full dentures. They regret not taking the time and money to get their own teeth fixed. You are obviously with the pro-denture crowd so I don't care what you have to say. Full dentures are usually the wrong choice for most people.

Steve I am very offended at your comment to myself. In what way am I simply wrong? Yes you are right bit there also millions who are happy!
Everything in my post is based on my experience which is right for me! Doesn't mean its right for you.
Isn't the whole point of this forum for advice fromALL sides.
I don't think I can say dentures are right for most people, they are right for me! Just as I don't think you can say dentures are wrong for most people they are wrong for you!. As for not caring what I say because I like my dentures? I did assume as a fellow denture wearer you were an adult not a child! Stop been so personal and against others because they don't always agree with you. Take it on the chin (god I cud make that into such a corny joke) we are all supposed to be hear because we care/want to give or accept help and advice.

I've stated on other threads there is nothing wrong with wearing full dentures if it makes someone happy. If you're happy, that's great! I started this thread especially to get the attention of people who still have their own teeth and are considering their options. Many have teeth that can be fixed and don't realize how badly their lives will suffer if they have all their teeth extracted and get full dentures. Most folks don't want to age rapidly and would be far better off slowly getting their own teeth fixed. Full dentures should ALWAYS be a person's LAST RESORT.
There are some people who have no other choice, of course.

I suggest everyone who hasn't read "The Difficult Truth About Dentures" do so. It accurately describes what happens to people who have all their teeth extracted and wear full dentures.

There are bullies on this forum who try to smear or run anybody off of it who does not support the interests of the denture industry. They do not care about us. I urge anyone who still has their own teeth and is considering getting full dentures to spend several weeks/months researching the disadvantages of wearing full dentures. Vary your search words. I prefer Yahoo over Google for doing online searches. Also read The Difficult Truth About Dentures link I posted in the previous post.

I am not anger Steve, but I know a azzwipe when I see one posting on Topix. I am smart enough to smell BS coming from someone like you.

Here is a google Search from the term you like to use to scare people. " Facial Collapse " Show a study or Information from one Dentist not selling implants.

Steve, with any forum there needs to be opinions on both sides. You have a negative view of dentures because of your personal situation but I suggest you open you mind to those of us that have a positive view that denture are not only a good thing but offer positive gains back to our lives.

I have full dentures and truly celebrate the anniversary date of when my teeth were removed and the denture went in. I can smile now, never worry about pain associated from my teeth and truly eat everything I ever tried with natural teeth.

Please accept the positive side to your negative position. Allow each of us to determine our fate with a true insight as to benefits versus the negative you present.

If anyone asks, I fully embrace my decision to become edentulous and sue dentures. Anyone who has bad teeth can review as you state but they should note that someone like myself is pleased with the results!.....Nomoreteeth

Hello:) Hey I'm REALLY happy you are happy! I accept there can be a positive side to wearing full dentures - always have!!!!! I hope you continue to be happy, too! I STRONGLY agree with you that forums need to have opinions on BOTH sides. The truth is most people do not find out the truth about dentures until after their teeth have been extracted. Once all the teeth have been extracted, they are gone forever. I've known many people who chose full dentures because they thought it was cheaper than getting their own teeth fixed. Some just had a few cavities that needed fixing. They saw advertisements from Affordable Dentures. They went and unnecessarily got ALL their teeth extracted and were fitted with full dentures. They were happy at first, but after a year or so, most of them have told me they made a terrible mistake and would give anything to have their own teeth back. I tried to warn them beforehand but they would not listen to me. They had it in their heads that getting "super white" full dentures would give them a brand new life. Again, I'm glad you are happy. Take care:)

You just can't imagine what life is like having to wear regular full dentures. After having all their teeth extracted, many folks feel like they are missing a body part. Many people sleep with their full dentures so nobody will see them without their teeth. They only take them out to clean them. This is not a good idea because of the added pressure on the bone - also because your gums need to rest and shouldn't be covered 24 hours a day. Full dentures are not "permanent" like real teeth. You will have to make frequent appointments with a dentist for the rest of your life to have your dentures adjusted and relined as you lose more and more bone. You will also need to get a new denture every 5 to 7 years for the rest of your life because your face changes drastically when you have all your teeth extracted. Most of my friends who wear full dentures regret not spending the money to get their own teeth fixed right.

What a stupid, stupid post this is!!! Try having 20+ toothaches on teeth that you already spent thousands on that make you cry and try to tear them out by hand hearing the roots crack and feeling less pain than the ache.... unsalvageable. Dentures, and their inherent problems are a GIFT from above. As an accountant and social security recipient, Long live dentures, relinings, and goodbye to rotten and friggin ugly natural teeth that life evolved for me as a test of endurance.

I've stated on other threads, there are some folks who have no other option but to have all their teeth extracted & be fitted with full dentures. If you truly had all unsalvageable teeth, then you had no options - you had no "choice." Many people, however, who choose full dentures DO have a choice. They have a few bad teeth that ache, and out of desperation, go to discount denture clinics when they are in pain. They've seen cheap denture ads from discount denture clinics. These people also think their good teeth aren't shaped "perfect enough" and ask the dentist(s) to extract ALL their teeth - including their good teeth. They do not realize what a horrible mistake they are making. They realize later - after it's too late.

wow, you are dumb...most people go to dental schools or low cost dental clinics if they can't afford a few fillings and crowns, etc. There places who will do fillings for $30 or $40. Most people get dentures because the crowns are not holding, or their gums and teeth are beyond repair. In the 50s and 60s a sizable part of the population had dentures and had successful and long and happy lives. You are trying to scare people along with all the implant clinics and vampire dentsts out there. you are a total jerk...people already feel bad about not taking care of their teeth and being afraid to see dentists before it was too late...they want to move on with their lives, so let them, you piece of dog crap
