I have recently been diagnosed with Crohn's. Will I be able to purchase individual insurance in the future? Am interested in hearing other's experiences.

Have you called the insurance company? Give it a try. I have not called them because I assume they will only take me on as a customer if I fill their pockets w/ my hard earned earnings. Which I do not currently have enough of to cover my existing bills. I cannot say for sure what they will do, as I have not asked them what they will do....
Try watching Michael Moore's Movie- Sicko. Then ask yourself... Do I really want spend money on health insurance? Or do I want spend that money to move to France?
Did you know that if you are broke you can almost always pay your medical bills off in payments of about $25 per month? I am $5k in medical debt but only pay $100 per month between all of my providers. No Interest. Just call your provider, ask for the billing department and cry yourself a river, they will build you a bridge to get back to your life.
You can also call the drug companies themselves and apply for patient assistance programs. FREE prescriptions if you are within their undisclosed preset, income range and can't afford the drugs you need.

I have answered my own question. As a test I applied to BlueCross and was declined because I indicated Crohn's on the application. I was referred to the state's high risk pool and talked to them. Coverage is guaranteed by law abut cost about twice what a regular policy would cost.

I haven't found individual insurance to cover the Crohn's. BC offers temp insurance that at least covers my non-Crohn's for a decent price. My doctors discount when they know it's not covered and the hospital takes 50% off their fee as soon as I say no insurance. And the drug company just mailed me $1500 worth of my prescription because I do quality. The only place that will not discount a penny is Quest Diagnostics.

I was denied individual insurance, so I went with the state's high risk pool (Illinois). The cost is $595 a month with a $5,000 deductible just for me. I've been looking for other alternatives as of yet no luck.

Everyone be very careful when you apply for health insurance!!!! Most all of the ones who tell you you are approved its a scam this is called a discount card...I do know that assurant carries people with crohns but with stiplations such as a rider for 6 months to a year stating no claims will be payed it is an 80 20 plan and you v=have a co payment and as well until you have the coverage over 6 months most of the stipulations such as limited doctors visits per year are waived.. I have had crohns for 7 months and I feel I;am getting better...Meds have really weighedd down on me such as the prendsone If you take this please wing your self of this it is deadly talk to your doctor!!!! Stay away from immuran it is very lethal...If you haven't started remicade try to start it as soon as you can.. If you do not have insurance they do have pap pateince asst program Your local hospital will give you the infusions...It is easier to have a doctor who has been treating you to help you with this as well as giving you the prescription... I found that flagyl is the best medication to stay on as far as an antifungal medication... Note: Remicade is injected through an Iv for 2 hours, 500 mg's 250 per hour..No complications with mine and the next one for me will be 6...It does keep you from being hospitalized.. If possible try to prevent from having the surgeory colonoscopy a bag thats placed on the outside. This will 100% prevent you from from carrying any insurance....

I would be interested to hear which company will insurance Crohn's. My husband suffers from it and is self-employed now and our COBRA coverage runs out in January.

Im about to marry the man of my dreams. He has Crohns diease I just recently contacted my insurance carrier thinking that once we're married they would offer him coverage even if they wouldnt cover anything dealing wit crohns something jus for if he gets a cold , but I was wrong (denied)and not only that he cant get life insurance coverage also its becoming a pain and I dont know what to do we dont have kids yet but when we do i want peace of mind knowin that we have the coverages he needs. To top it off its difficult for him to keep a steady job no one wants the person that need to be off for treatments, and disability is a BUST.

My brother is having a very hard time with his chrons, he is constantly in pain and we are worried that the chrons is going to get the best of him. I'm trying to look up ways for him to manage his chrons as well as an insurance company to help him get on a regular medicine routine. if you have any problems i found a site that states that you can recieve psychiatric counseling if you need it (my brother does). Let me know if you have any adivce to pass to my brother, please.

I have found insurance companies that will write a policy, but the catch is the rider of two years or longer that will not cover your pre-existing illness. Had state insurance. Lost that when my children turned 18. Turned down by disability three times. Need an operation for a fistula problem, but can't afford to. Constantly sick and in pain! Haven't given up. Still searching.

Is this a discount card, as above your comment from Rod, or is this a valid insurance company?

I'm glad you've found something that works for you! I hope it continues to work and the worst of your worries involve the pain from being stuck with the needle for the infusion!

And while it's good that you've pointed out that Centocor is helping folks with Crohn's get a treatment that's helpful for some; it's not a treatment for everyone with Crohn's.

Why? A small percentage of people have severe life threatening allergic reactions to it to first time they get it. As well if you've been treated with Remicade, then went off for a year or more you've likely developed anti-bodies to it. These anti-bodies can cause the same life threatening response that some have their first time.

As well, before they understood this about Remicade I was given a one off treatment of it... So Remicade is not an option for me, and probably isn't for anyone else treated in a one off capacity just after its general release...

As always when trying to find the right way to treat Crohn's involve your GI doctor. If you're having problems affording the medication, talk to the pharmaceutical companies out there! Many have programs available to help people get the medications they need without breaking the bank!
