If you smoke, QUIT NOW. There are fates worse than death. COPD is one of them. In my youth I could walk fives miles with no problem. Today 5 steps is a strenuous workout. Don't let this happen to you!

That's awful to hear Ralph.

It's true that there are fates worse than death. A common misconception amongst smokers is the attitude " I Don't want to get old and senile anyway and don't mind dying before I'm 70".

Of course if that death is slow, painful and starts when they're 50 I'm guessing they won't be quite as enthusiastic.

From the article: "Chronic air hunger is a miserable way to live. The fact that a relative, or someone you know, lived a long life while smoking is irrelevant. You may be more susceptible to the effects of smoking. Once COPD sets in, continued smoking is tantamount to playing Russian roulette with your life."

I wish you the very best Ralph and hope things will be ok for you.

smoking is not the only cause of COPD . my wife never smoked a cigarette in her life .she is from a smoking family . and they lived in a two room house in WV . there was only a bed room and kitchen . so there were limits as to where she could get out of the second hand smoke . plus where they lived was up on top of a mountain from all of the chemical plant.s ( in charleston). in early morning you wipe the windshield of the cars with your hands and it will look like coal dust

Would it not just be better and faster if you put a plastic bag over your head and suffocate yourself in 10 minutes, rather than over 5-10 years of not breathing and dying slowly from COPD suffocation.

Many who can not quit smoking is because they just do not value their lives as much as those that love them and have asked them to quit smoking do.

Most smokers have low self esteem from their childhood trauma's and just do not think they are good enough to be loved or wanted.

They have it all wrong, if even one person has asked you to quit, you are worth more than you realize and you should value yourself above all.

That is how I just went cold turkey, because it finally click in my mind after 20 years, that if I mean that much to my loved one's then why don't I mean that much to myself.

Figure it out, then maybe you can just take control over the addiction and quit. Don't get me wrong, it is a battle everyday. I still have the urges to and may even take a drag ever now and then (which I regret because it taste so bad), but then I just remind myself that I am loved and wanted more by myself than by any one else.

Been there, and have relatives there. With all the crud in the air around Charleston, it's amazing that anyone survives past the age of five.

You say your wife never smoked a day in her life; The you say she is from a smoking family. Well I suggest to you tyhat she smoked plenty, only it was always the smoke from others. if you smoke, smoke outside and be respectful of other people. You may not be suseptable to the danger of cigarette smoke, or else it has yet to affect you. Eother way, it does affect others. Think and be considerate.
