Hi,
I, like many it seems has COPD. I did but donít smoke anymore,(10 years free). My Doctor indicated that tests show a 30 percent lung capacity remaining. To make a long story short the mucus (very thick) builds so quickly in my airway that I need Albuterol treatment 5 times per day and I take 25 mm of prednisone daily. Iíve been on the prednisone for almost 10 months and my question is how long can I safely take this medication?

8 years ago when i first knew i had copd they put me on a much higher leval of prednisone for a week then slowly cut it back to 20 mm which I was on for about one year. My Dr wanted to keep me on it but i didn't like what it was doing to me,making me nasty asnd short tempered so i stoped over several weeks by cutting back on it's us a little at a time.(warning,i'm not saying you should do this) My Dr and i had a falling out over it and i ended up with a new Dr. who worked with me to keep me off it.I now use Advair 500 and have been on it several years and have done much better. When i first became ill i could hardly walk but my new Dr got me into a rehab class which helped. I now use a treadmill for 30 min every day(with 02 @3 ltr)plus use five and ten pound weights 4-5 times per week for 15-20 min. I stoped smoking when i first knew i was ill and my FEV1 is 22/23%. If you have not already done so go see your eye Dr as Pred. may give you cataracts. If you get off the Pred. I belive you will do better in the long run but that's just what i think and i'm not a Dr.lol

I started out on 10 mgs. and have gone to 20 mgs daily. Yes, there are some side effects, but you have to choose between quality or quanity of life. I'm down to about 20 % lung capacity. As far as the side effects go, I take calicum plus d twice a day and lot of vitamins. For the anxiety caused from Predisone, I take 150 mgs of Buforian twice a day. Like I said, it's either quality or quanity. COPD is progessive and it's going to kill me. I've accepted this. Oh, I don't want to die, but the fact remands. In the words of Jim Morrison, "ain't nobody gettin' out of here alive" I stopped smoking 16 - 17 years ago. I was a spray painter for the better part of my life on top of that. Plus, a whole lot of weed ( I've been clean and sober since 2/19/90 ) I've had a good run and I have no regrets of my life. If I have to die, I want to be comfortable. I was on prednisone for 5 years. I started with the once a month shots for 6 months and then the tablets. I took as little as 10mg. a day to 80mg. a day.
It was at the time the only thing they found that would help.
As of April 8th, this year I finally got weaned off after my 3rd Pulmonologist started me on 2 medicines that worked for me.
All I can say about prednisone is this. I was told I might be on it for the rest of my life so to answer your question .... I guess there is no right or wrong answer. It's a matter of everyone is different.
I gained 60lbs. taking it and have now lost 40lbs.
I feel great and am not jittery or anxious feeling any more.
I finally have my life back.
I wish you nothing but the best of luck!!

Wow, I was on prednisone for 5 years and am now off, thank God and I just went to the eye Dr and he said I have the beginnings of cataracts.
I also never wore glasses and I now have tri-focals.

I can recommend a reputable pharmacy (Prednisone) professional-meds.com/item.php... I received the order and it was on time and the pills work great.
