COPD and Chronic Pain

I was diagnosed with COPD in 2012 and I am on Advair and Proventil.
Most of the time I have mucus, but it varies in color depending on how bad it is. I am so glad I read the Copd Forum as I now understand why I have such severe neck pain - depending on how bad I am feeling, it sometimes feel like someone is trying to pull my head off my shoulders! I have osteoporosis and arthritis and until I got COPD kept the arthritis pretty much under control with 2 Aleve per day. It doesn't help the stiff neck. The mucus is a constant worry and I am pretty sick of taking antibiotics as they never completely take it away. Any suggestions?

My mother has COPD, she is 89 years old and was a smoker. I want to share her story as it may be helpful. She was diagnosed a year and a half ago but probably had it much longer.
She is on Hospice Care now and it is the best thing that's happened for her since this began. All her medications and cares are covered. This includes oxycodone and morphine, antidepressants, advair, prednisone, and others. As her tolerance for these pain relievers increases so does the dosage: all monitored by her hospice nurse.
She is visited by caring staff who bathe her and massage her ; there's even music and pet therapy. Spiritual and mental health aide too.
You don't have to be "dying" or be very elderly to qualify for hospice, COPD was her qualifier.
I hope this is helpful.

Hello,
I have been diagnosed with COPD for 2 years now and waiting on my SSI hearing. In the beginning of my disease I had alot of chest pain and colds and cough. Now I havent had a cold in 2 years and hardly have a cough. I am in constant states of pain from mild to severe each day. I have bone pain in all joints daily. My cats scans show scarring and scattered noncalcified nodular opacities on both lungs. I am weak all the time and out of breathe. Does anyone have similar symtoms? Thanks
I was diagnosed with COPD 2 years ago, and 2 years prior to that was diagnosed with Rhumytoid Arthritus. I am on O2 all night and a portable for on the go! if you go anywhere!!! I have constant pain in my rib cage, legs and hips, and all my joints. It feels like it is deep in the bones! even in my tailbone. I have trouble even getting in and out of the bath tub or doing basic things like cleaning or laundry. I spent 6 years in a store that was infested with stachybotris mold and was sick constantly with sinusitus, bronchitus, constant lung infections, strep throat that would not go away, with blisters constantly in my throat! they finally closed the store down and had a hasmat team tear out and clean the building, but the damage was done. I had my tonsils and adnoids removed and had damaged my lungs beyond repair, all while in my early 40s.

I was diagnosed with COPD in 2011. I was hospitalized 4 or 5 times in about six months. Like alot of you I started out with bronchitis, then asthma. This all started in my teens. I am now 49 and I have never smoked. I am on oxygen.
My mother took me to the doctor when I was young for bronchitis, asthma and so on and when the doctor would tell her that I had to be kept out of smoke, she would agree with him and light up going out the door.
I found you all because I googled pain and COPD. I am having pain in my upper back and chest. I didn't know that COPD could cause this but I knew this pain didn't start until after my breathing problems started getting worse.
I am uninsured and untreated other than my oxygen. I was fortunate my husband was able to buy my oxygen machine for me in 2011. I was hospitalized and the doctors in the hospital said I couldn't come home without oxygen. I always kinda laugh at that....wonder what they would have done had I not got an oxygen machine?
Thanks for letting me chime in ya'll. I don't feel so alone and stupid for complaining about this God-awful pain.

does anyone have back spasms aswell as the achin joints n lungs n rib cage and cramp is this a part of copd, cause its every day n getting worse i have a multitude of health probs and copd is just one of them. I would appreciate any comment and advice as things dont seem to be easin with any pain meds even oramorph and mst high doses.
Through trial & error & research I found that all the long acting bronchodilators cause muscle cramps. Google " Advair - muscle cramps" or "Symbicort - muscle cramps" and see how many hits you get. I cannot tolerate either of these drugs for more than 6 weeks. Then I need a break before I can restart them. All of the Dr's are skeptical and say they have never heard of such a thing or they think I should suck it up and deal with it! These cramps are unbelievably painful - like a dog trying to rip off your calf muscle - it can affect any muscle in the body.

I appreciate the collective input.

I was diagnosed with COPD/mild emphyszema and mild asthma. I take 1 to 2 400 mg. Valerian Root (Wal-mart--about $4 for 100 count--they smell and taste horrible but it only lasts a second and well worth the relief for me). When I'm not taking the Valerian, I drink 1 to 2 glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon (also Wal-mart--about $2.97 a 750 ml bottle). When I drink it the pain seems to subside--not because I'm drunk, but because there seems to be some anti-inflammatory properties. Hope this helps everyone. I am male--and I do not work for Wal-mart.

I am sorry you have this disease.I,ve had this for 15 years and severalhospital stays. I was given hours to live. When I got out after 18 days in icu and a week of regular care my dr. had me go to a respitory theraphist and we worked out an exercise and food regime suited to where my body was at that time.lots of fruit and vegtables and tons of water.my first time on treadmill was 3 minutes and i was exhausted. After 2 months I was on it for 30 -40 minutes plus using bike. I am in the later stages of his but nhave so far retired 4 drs. after 13 years several more hospital stays I am still here and god willing will be here for years to come. I know that it,s scary but you can keep your disease on hold for a long time new treatments are on the way,go to www.copd.com there is so much good info there. god bless everyone with this diseaseand all the people who help us.

For goodness sakes get off of that ibuprofen and switch to something less harsh(like naproxen, consult your doc)- u need a substitute medication for long-term use for similar effect, without the danger of damaging your kidneys. Consult good websites for best information such as webmd , mayoclinic , and a few others. Use their name in the webtitle search bar and your question or issue. Here is a site that I notice listed some of them but please talk to your doc an do your due diligence http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/health-websit...

I am 46 years old diagnosed with severe asthma at birth. back then they did not have the machines to tell you if your child quit breathing so when I slept my mom would lay her hand on my chest all night. when i was 24 I was diagnosed with c.o.p.d. it has slowly gotten worse. I am now on oxygen 4 liters at rest and activity 24/7. I have had 6 flareups in the last 6 months and was hospitalized 3 times. I have an extremely hard dry cough for the last two years and a burning sensation across my upper back. In the last 6 months the body aches have gotten so bad that all I do is cry even with taking my anti depression pills. My joints hurt and I am stiff when I walk. there are times that I even lose my balance after standing up. I take advair 50/500 spiriva and daliresp to help with the flare ups. I am a former smoker of 30 year, about 2 packs a day. I was just tested for the alpha 1 antirypsin but have mot gotten the results back yet. I do not think i have it. I have a sleep study coming up because I have not been able to sleep in a laying down position in 9 years, I sleep in a recliner. I could not go to a dr. for years because of no insurance and unable to work. Now that I have insurance I have a new Dr. i am hoping he will give me something for the pain. Ibprophen just does not cut it. I did take a muscle relaxer that I had from another problem last year for a few days and it helped with some of the pain but not all. I lost my husband to lung cancer 11 months ago and to tell the truth if I am going to die from this I wish it would hurry up, then I can be with my husband again.

4years ago I was rushed to the ER. Echoing heart beat in my chest, abdominal pulsation, high blood pressure, passing out, vaso vagal response, sudden headache, and a slew of other things.

Your muscle cramps explained. Believe it or not, you are not hyper inflating, but you chest cavity has reduced pressure. The ribs protruding are fixed ribs while the others collapse in. Over time the muscles with stored energy for exhalation become smaller with atrophy from the decreased volume. Then as you take the respritory medicine it starts to expand more rapidly than it collapsed. All those muscles are being stretched past there normal point. All of these muscles have shared anchor points with other muscles throughout the body.

What I have found is most doctors wont do anything till you quite smoking. Once you quite, they are more willing to help. Till then they want you to suffer so you will quite.
