Help - I need opinions and advice. My doctor switched me from ex lax to restoralax and I have not felt so miserable for a long time.

Has anyone else been totally sick with retained fluid, severe gas to the point their back and shoulders have hurt, abdominal pain, and severe nausea?

My doc wants me to take this and I am at the end of my rope hoping my body will get used to it. I sit and cry I feel so awful. It has been about a month and I drink around 3 litres of water a day.

Thanks

That is NOT good. Does your doctor know what severe reactions you are having? It sounds to me like it's not the medicine for you. You seem to have the problems they warn about on the information sheet that comes with it. Read the information sheet that comes with RestoraLax and then talk to your pharmacist and your doctor.

For me it has been a magic bullet with no side effects at all - I've had severe constipation from having to take high doses of narcotic pain meds and RestoraLax has ended that completely - no pain, no bloating, no gas, no more constipation - just easy comfortable regular bowel movements for the first time in over 4 years.

For me it usually works within 8 to 12 hours. As it says at
http://chealth.canoe.ca/drug_info_details.asp...
It may take 2 to 4 days for this medication to work.(I think that means initially)
I also have found that I only need to take it about 4 days out of 7 and I usually take it at about 10pm mixed with fruit juice. It is however tasteless and odourless.

thank you for your reply. I ended up quitting it and now take Milk of Magnesia and have started a drug called resolor. Not impressed with the resolor but we have to try.

I am also fighting constipation from narcotic pain meds.

They say the stuff is tasteless and odorless but I find it had a taste as I was nauseous and threw it up often after taking it. It took a few tries to get it down.

Just FYI there is a movement to have a full FDA review of the drug. It has been petitioned so they have to do it.

It sounds like you are allergic to the stuff ... if you're referring still to Restoralax ... it is a magic bullet for me .. it works in total comfort.

if you're referring to the Resolor again it sounds like you may be allergic to it. any time your body rejects something that quickly and definitively it sounds to me like an allergy or at least a severe adverse reaction.. and of course anyone can be allergic to anything .. which is why there are so many drugs for the same problem .... my body has gone nuts since brain tumour surgery and there is now a list of 38 drugs that I can no longer take .. 4 of them cause potentially fatal anaphylaxis .. there's nothing 'wrong' with the drugs they are just not right for me.

I had lifelong constipation. It went away when I went overseas for 9 months and I guess had a change of diet. Now it is back again after years but not bad as before. Here are a few things u can do besides diet: Take a spoon of freshly ground flax seed and 1 spoon of Physillium Husk daily. Physillium Husk can be taken with cold milk (no, never warm as it will clump up the husk). this helped my constipation a lot. when you go to the toilet keep a foot stool under you feet. The knees need to be higher than the hips as per the natural squatting position, to put pressure where it is needed. This makes a HUGE difference. I can seldom go without having the footstool under my feet. My high school teacher had told us this and I never forgot it, thank God.

Restoralax (the canadian version of Miralax) is incredibly dangerous. It wasn't until my child developed horrible neurological symtoms that I started to research the side effects of this medicine. There is THOUSANDS of cases of people who developed Twitches, tics, depression, horrible pain, and sensory issues from this medication. Some people giving this medicine to there children for years at a time....and its now being questioned if this isn't a cause for MANY cases of Autism. PLEASE research this medicine. and the neurological damage it has caused thousands and thousands of children. And if your child takes it? and you noticed behavioural changes, twitches, sensitivity to sounds inability to concentrate...please please visit this group http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/miralax/in... and read the stories of thousands of families who had children on this medicine. I feel horrible...absolutely horrible that I didn't know this sooner because this medicine (Restoralax) made my son incredibly sick and on the verge of a territies diagnose. You can get better after going off this medicine but it takes weeks or months ( Im sure depending on how long you have been on it )
Please spread the word. The FDA is investigating but it takes a long while for them to publish findings.

I know it is only a short term solution but doctors have prescribed it forever. My sister has had kids on it for some time.

I honestly believe the poster whose child was so badly affected is right, it is a terribly dangerous drug. After going off it I was better but continue to retain fluid. It makes me angry as I have only one kidney and did this drug damage it???

Stop taking restoralax immediately. My doctor said the same thing. I stopped 7 days ago. The stuff gave me memory problems, motor skills distinction crippling pai, vomiting 50 times day, back pain, shoulder pain, I havent been able to do my own groceries even. I got more side effects, but I'm having trouble holding up my arms. I've been restoralax for 7 years, trust me when I say it will get worse if you continue.

i have tried it twice and it had the opposite effect it constipated the heck out of me, plus caused huge water retention (which it does anyway as it holds water in the bowel so they say). PEG 3350 I basically antifreeze, it's the same stuff that will kill a dog, and why they think it's safe for humans I'll never know. but they state it is "safe for human consumption" if it kills a dog wouldn't you think it would harm humans in some capacity at least neurologically? PEG means polyethelene glycol

Low molecular weight polyethylene glycol is used for automotive anti-freeze.
Most commonly used ones are ethylene glycol or propylene glycol

Hi Raymond. My six year old daughter has been on this for 4 and half years and she has various side effects. From severe night sweats ; that I need to change her any where from 2-5 per night for the last 4.5 years, developed adult underarm odour starting at 2 and a half and the scent is so much stronger now at six. She has episodes of crying inconsolably and talks often about being sad. She has a really low immune system where she is sick almost every 6-8 weeks. Can you or anyone share their child's side effects.
Thank you
Monica

I don't like the idea of taking this every day for one week. I think that when I get constipated then I'll take it and see what happens. I only want something that going to give me relief, or a good stool or two,so maybe this is not the right medicine for me? Any thoughts please?

Hi Folks, try natural things - at morning before breakfast drink a cup of warm water and eat 1 table spoon of organic honey. Wait 30 min., then have breakfast prefferably quick oats , add ground -flax seeds- a spoon, add dry cranberries , goji berry, finish the recipe by yourself ( healthy stuff only).
Love yourself ! Don't take Restoralax !

Sorry, Dani, but you're a bit of a quack. Organic honey is no healthier that good old refined sugar. Telling people that that's what they need to do is irresponsible.(Are you anti-vaccine too?)

As for Restoralax? If you read the discussion above, you'll see that it's been helpful to some and bad for others. I really don't think it's up to you to dispense your "medical advice" to people who have come here to discuss a specific health remedy.

This my doctor's second time putting me on "Restoralax".
The first time I was hit instantly with excruciating pain in my left mid abdomen (never felt that in my life ). This pain was dropping me to the floor in my office. I went to the hospital where an xray showed a blockage and was told to take restoralax. I tried their "odorless" and "flavorless" poison, but I can taste and smell it, not to mention the oily feel. It got things moving after 4 days, but actually caused painful gas and bloating if I wasn't drinking a gallon of water daily.
As soon as I stopped taking it and started using my diet, natural products like pure honey, physilium husks, hemp oil, probiotics, etc etc...my life got much better.
Well like your typical human, once I felt great I went back to my previous lifestyle and now have my previous problems. Once again I went to see my doctor and her advice was to take "Restoralax" and to except the fact that I will have to take it for the rest of my life.
I can't believe whay has happened to our medical care system. If you're not on a medication, the first thing the doctor does is prescribe something, and if you're already on something they just change it to something else. That is, if you actually see a real doctor when one visits the hospital. How can a "health care professional" not know how dangerous most(if not all) the drugs that they push on us are so dangerous for our health?
To make matters worse, a person like myself cruises the internet looking for input from others who have been in a similar situation. What a great idea! Then they get people like Ginger who just can't mind their business. Instead of adding something positive to an information sharing
forum topic, they expose their nativity and ignorance by putting in their two cents worth. Really? Someone sharing the reality that wholesome foods could actually help us and for me, it did.

Sorry Ginger, but I think you and I both know who the quack is here. I don't think it's YOUR place to decide which opinion is acceptable on a public forum, and I am sure that others out there appreciate input that they hadn't considered previously. If you ever choose to take it upon yourself to learn about positive healing from alternate sources, you'll understand. If not, good luck with your faith in our medical system. Either way, let me leave you with this bit of advice....believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see
