Anyone ever have constipation but your stool is fairly soft?
I go 1-2 times a day, but only small amounts come out. They break up into 2-3 inch pieces and feels like i need to go more. Pain in my left lower back as well.

Yes! I have had that experience many times. The pain in the lower left back is probably trapped gas. My GI doctor told me that the only reason why colon hurts is b/c of expansion (have not researched this before though).

What I usually do when this happens is try to eat lots of dried fruit (figs and apricots have the most fiber), drink lots more water and especially right after consuming the dried fruit, and also take a magnesium before bed. Usually, if I do this, I am good to go the next day and have full and complete stools.

Keep us posted and hope this helps!

It never hurts to see your doctor about stuff like this.

Particularly when you feel all bunged up and you are still going 2-3 times a day. Perhaps it is just a feeling that you 'should' go more often rather than a bodily need?

I don't know if you will see this as your post is so old but I am having the same problem. Its soft it just doesn't want to come out except a little and i have to strain to get that out.I've had all kinds of tests and enemas and laxatives dont work. Did you get relief, and if so how?

Same symptoms as Amanda from April 2012. Had 8 inches removed from my colon two weeks ago due to severe diverticulitis. Have tried all the treatments...What next?

I'm having same issue. Well, sorta. Feels like I new to go right after I go.(few mintues later really)
I also feel these weird bumps on my anus when I push to have a BM. I know weird. Im 14. And I think it's a internal hemorroid. I'm a hypochondriac and this stuff scares me. But recently I have only been pooping marbles.(really for about a day). What's going on?! D:

A quick note to Penny. You should really visit a doctor if you only go once a month. I agree with the original answer about fiber and water, it really helps but I know that especially for me that I only get this when there's something wrong with my diet. Milk products especially and what do you know? Yesterday I had A LOT of milk products. So I think that if you have this problem on a recurring basis just look over what you eat regularly in excess and maybe stop for a few days to see if the constipation issue clears up or take it in moderate amounts. It works for me.

I am having the same problem that most of you are having. Small amount of soft stool and alot of gas. I feel like I need to go and it turns out to be a whole lotta of gas. I had this same problem one year ago, and was sent for a CT of my abdomen, which was normal. OK while I was there they gave me 2 bottles of water with some kind of chemical in the water for the ct. When I left that office before I could get back to work I had to go after 5 weeks of constipation. I was so relieved, everything went back to normal. Now one year later and I am having the same problem again. I have tried prune juice with milk magnesia, lots of water, fruit, probiotics, laxative and herbal lax tea. All of this has not worked very well. Some one told me I might have colon cancer. Have any of you been checked for cancer? If so, how did they test you?

I am having the same problem!! My doc says it's IBS which I haven't been medically diagnosed for, but for the past three or four weeks I have not had a normal bowel movement! I have lower back pain, gas, and the urge to go but only thinner soft stools come out if I'm lucky. I am still going everyday but nowhere near as much as usual and I have to strain. I have been drinking more water (2 litres a day) and have added more fibre to my diet since this started but no change. Please help I was regular before this!! Doc said I don't have hemorrhoids and no hard stool inside me after checking.

I am 18 and have struggled with this my whole life. I have been diagnosed with acid reflux disease, which I believe is made worse by my constipation. Ive had so many tests and everything comes out normal. My doctors know something is wrong but cannot figure it out. Im terribly sick of being in pain and feeling like this. I have read so many forums of people having this same issue, and no one seems to know what it is. help. Ive tried working with my diet so much over the years. I am a healthy vegetarian. I cant eat poorly because it flares up my acid reflux. No idea what to try next.

62 years old and have had problems all my life. Been on Miralax daily for a couple years with intermittent "attacks" where I have horrible stomach cramps, gas, vomitting. Diagnosed with redundant colon. My GI also said my colon is very narrow. Thus, my stool is also. It's soft and comes out in small sections 3-5 inches long. Then like today,I feel full but not much comes out. Drives me crazy. I just want to be normal but ain't gonna happen.
Thanks for all the info. Nice to know I'm not alone.

Similar problem here. Started 6 mo ago after I ate some questionable food that had been in the fridge a bit too long. I went from 1 solid bowel movement a day to 1-2 per day, soft and gassy. Tried probiotic and fiber supplements, and there's no effect. Time to see a doctor, I think, although I'm not sure a doctor can really help.

Would be great if those of you who successfully treated your problem came back and reported on what worked. Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

I found that taking movicol (miralax) every second day helps to keep me regular without over softening. I also take (the quite expensive) VSL 3 probiotic whic helps with the bloated. feeling.

(ive given up on trying to adjust my diet - tried it all for about 4years)

hope this helps!

I found that eating a fiber one bar with hot tea or coffee, drinking at a minimum 1 and 1/2 quarters of waters, doing some type of moderate physical activity for at least 20 consecutive minutes every day, cutting my pork and beef consumption to 4 ounces, stopped drinking cow's milk and doubled up on my vegetables helped my bowel movements return to normal soft and daily.
