I noticed that soon after I drank a glass of orange juice I got an itch.
I suspected that the acid in the juice goes to my blood and actually irritates my hemroids.

My proctologist actually confirmed this even without me mentioning it! So I just wanted to share that knowledge with all of you.

If you have problems with hemorrhoids do not drink orange juice! It makes it worse!

Also don't take high doses of vitamin C when you have a flare up. Vitamin C is an ascorbic acid that will irritate your hemroids too.

Not many people know this and some even suggested high doses of Vitamin C as a treatment for hemorrhoids.

I say stay away of Vitamin C and large amounts of citrus fruits!

Here's what really helped me:

1) Do not use toilet paper. Use medicated wipes instead.

2) Drink plenty of water and take some fiber supplement.

3) Take shower after each bowel movement

4) Take Calmovil (calmovil.com )- it has bioflavanoids - the good stuff from citrus fruits without the irritating acids.

5) Don't be afraid to go to proctologist!

LOL...I think its time to get a new doctor!! orange juice causing anal itching!! what will they think of next!! Unless your slicing oranges and rubbing your butt with them...doubt very much it will go from your stomach and that quickly into your "blood" and cause an itchy ass!!

I also suffered ,after drinking several glasses of orange juice over the course of several days. Something in the orange juice, perhaps an allergic reaction. When i stopped drinking the juice, my symptoms stopped.

Donna,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the proctologist. Both my wife and I stay away from citrus because of the negative effect it has on our Hemorrhoids. I suspect that not many protogists are aware of this. My mother-in-law has had terrible Hemerrhoids for years and she has eaten grapefruit every day for years. She told my wife this morning, "I must have my grapefruit" I think it has something to do with the fact that grapefruit helps burn calories.
I would only add to your recommendations that toilet paper with a dab of hand lotion works best for me.

Glad to see someone confirming what I had begun to suspect. I had gone a good while without any flare ups. Now I think it's because I drink coffee for breakfast in the winter instead of orange juice. But recently I had orange juice again for the first time in months, and within the day I began to have itching, then burning, then a full fledged flare up. About the time that healed up I had some punch at a wedding with pineapple juice in it, and I started all over again. At least now that I know this is the problem, I know what to avoid. Any suggestion on wipes? I'm allergic to witch hazel, which most of them contain.

Lots of people have acidic type reactions to too much OJ, etc. e.g. many get sores on the sides of their tongues with too much OJ.

try apple juice.

There are 2 main causes for hemorrhoids

1 - Eating too much processed food
2 - Sedentary lifestyle

I would recommend you to try natural treatment that is attacking the root of the problem.

You can read on hemorrhoids treatments here:

If you have been diagnosed with prolapsed hemorrhoids, you might want to try the HemAway seat http://www.hemaway.com .

You just place the seat on your toilet when the hemorrhoid is protruding, sit on it, and your hemorrhoid will retract into the body for instant relief from pain and discomfort.

It gives you some quick relief in a few minutes without any side affects. Good luck!

Oh, common, that's just bullshit. The spicy foods cause hemorrhoids to itch. You can read it here - http://hemroidshemorrhoidscure.com/category/h... But not orange juice! It's harmless so there must be some other cause for this!

I have bleeding (to the point of suirting a spray of blood in the toilet when straining) but not painful hemorroids. For years I noticed that certain types of foods, especially dark green salads were correlated with bleeding. At some point I was taking vitamin C pills and also had the bleeding going at the same time. I thought there ust be a connection, so I experimented. I found that there is perfect temporal (time) corellation between taking vitamin C supplements and bleeding hemorroids. When I take them, I have bleeding, when I stop them the bleeding stops. So this is is not BS, but may be a cause and effect thing.

I'm currently having a bout of hemorrhoids that has been HORRIFIC. Major pain and bleeding for weeks. I've researched everything and finally came up with a plan that is working. I really want to share this as nothing that the doctor told me or gave to me worked.
1. I switched to a high fiber diet (oatmeal, tons of fruit and veggies, chicken, fish, NO PROCESSED FOOD, salads with olive oil based dressing, and at LEAST 10 glasses of water per day.
2. It's imperative to get the stool soft enough so it doesn't irritate the hemorrhoid. I took stool softeners (Colace) and Benefiber 3 times per day. The directions on Colace are 1-3 tablets, but I took 2 tablets 3 times per day. The Benefiber I took as directed.
3. I started taking Horse Chestnut 2 times per day. This is for bleeding hemorrhoids and to aid in circulation of the lower extremities.
4. After EVERY bowel movement I took either a warm bath or a sitz bath.
5. Never use toilet paper! Use either alcohol free wipes or cotton balls soaked in Witch Hazel (wonderful astringent that helps with bleeding).
6. Forget about Preparation H!!! There is a suppository called Calmol-4 that is FABULOUS. It's cocoa butter and zinc. Very hard to find, but if you call your local Walgreens pharmacist, they will order it and have it the very next day.
Trust me when I tell you that I tried virtually everything out there. The above is what is finally giving me relief. It took about 2 weeks, but I can't tell you how much better I feel :) Good Luck!

I am going through a horrific cold and consequently I have been popping 1 mg of vitamin C per day plus drinking orange juice and eating oranges. I had heard vitamin C was very good for colds. I have had my hemorrhoid flare up in a very bad way for the first time in years and also the sides of my tongue are sore. This is good enough evidence for me to stop all vitamin C until the hemorrhoid stops flaring.

Hemorrhoids itch also when they heal so that also could be the answer.
