Hi Guys, I am 32 and I was a heavy drinker between the age of 16-26 due to the drinking culture that I belonged to. I drink alcohol very occasionally these days although every time I have a moderate amount of alcohol I get a clod soar. Don't understand why and it is a real pain as I enjoy a few beers with my friends every now and again. I am concerned that it may be a liver problem. Does anyone else have this problem or ever heard of this. Any comments appreciated.

I think it happens to me too. A few beers is fine but anything more and I occasionally get one after. I think it's basically because your immune system is weakened by all the alcohol in the body. I would say either cut down or be ready with the preventative remedies such as Lysine tablets etc. No idea if it's got anything to do with your/our liver!

Thanks for you reply, what gets me is that i have two young children so often have sleepless nights and get run down although no out breaks. I didn't have any alcohol for about 6 months and had no out breaks, I then went out on a Saturday night and had about 5 pints of larger and got a cold soar a couple of days after. In fact every time I drink moderate amounts this happens. I have heard something about producing acid and certain foods/drinks cause this. Is this the case with alcohol? If so, is there an alcoholic drinks that I could drink that may not cause these o/b's. It's not that I need to drink it's just that when I go out with friends I enjoy having a few drinks.

alcohol produces yeast, wich is one of the causes of cold sore's. cold sores are embarrassing and no one wants them on their face. The American Institue of Advanced Medicine will get rid of your problem and will stop them from reoccurring. They have a 25 year esperience with skin problems. All medications are FDA approved with a 95% success rate and no known side effects. check them out at www.theaiam.com

Hi Rusty,
I wouldn't worry about your cold sores being caused by your liver. There is little chance of that. It's most likely because of a combination of things. Most of these things, you can learn about here:
http://www.discolorationofskin.com/ColdSore

1. Your body's immune system is weaker after drinking alcohol. Leaving you more susceptible to your Herpes simplex virus to act up.

2. Yeast from beer may trigger cold sores in some people.

3. After drinking, your vitamins are depleted. Specifically Vitamin B. Most cold sores are a result of your body being deficient of Vitamin B. It's an easy enough fix by taking a Vitamin B supplement if you are going to have a few beers. I wouldn't drink too much though, just 1 or two beers and see how it works for you. Then you can adjust your dosage of the vitamin.

Hi Rusty

I agree with Hannah22. The problem with you cold sore outbreak is an internal issue, no necessary you liver but you immune system. Try these tips to get started with boosting your immune system:( Try not to take any of the tips personal. Im just trying to help...

Try not to smoke.

Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat.

Exercise regularly.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Control your blood pressure.

If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

Get adequate sleep.

Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.

Get regular medical screening tests for people in your age group and risk category.

I hope these tips help you!

Nathaniel

Hey,

I get the exact same thing, I've noticed that taking a multi vitamin / vitamin b after I have a few drinks works wonders.

Nathan's tips are all the typical "healthy lifestyle" stuff we all know about and kinda do a bit when it's convenient. Much easier to hit up a vitamin tablet every few days and forget about it. Mine also reduce with antihistamine so I think there may be a mild yeast allergy when it's beer I'm drinking so check that out too.

Good luck, I frigging hate thee things.

I just had a pretty big party and drank a TON of alcohol last night. Sure enough I have the tingle of a cold sore that I have to deal with. I think if I have any more than 3 beers I get the tingle. I'm taking Lysine, putting Abreva on it, icing it, drinking tons of water, putting tea tree oil on it, and swishing my mouth out with Hydrogen Peroxide/water. Hopefully I can stop it before it gets any bigger! I also noticed that I drank a lot of coffee today and smoked a lot last night. Coffee + Beer + cigarettes = cold sore. I guess it's time for a life style change!

Beer is made from wheat, and therefore has a high argenine content; by sticking to food/ drink with higher lysine than argenine, you can lessen the frequency of cold sore occurrence. Whiskey is often made from corn, which is also high argenine. Although I love both, I've resigned to sticking mostly to potato vodkas (potatoes are higher lysine) or wine. Google lysine argenine ratios-- it definitely makes a difference.

I think it has something to do with your immune system being compromised when drinking. This happens to me too and many times it's accompanied by hives!

Those are some great tips. For more advice on getting rid of cold sores once you already have them, check out our video. We think you'll find some useful information in there. At the very least, you'll get a laugh.

I also agree with Hannah,

Yes, I definitely had a connection between drinking and cold sore outbreaks. Haven't had a cold sore in about 10 months. Give www.viradux-coldsore.com a try.

Might not work for you but at only $15 its worth a shot. Then you can drink 8-)

I just had a glass of red each night for four nights.
Hello cold-sore.
I very rarely drink these days. And it really does seem, even in tiny amounts like this...= cold-sore.
I look back at the pattern over the years and that is it.
This is the first time I noticed the link though.
