rough it up and apply bactine spray, it will num it and explode viruses on contact, the active ingredient is the same as the 1 use medications sold at wallgreens for 20+$ and with bactine you will get hundreds of doses for 5$,

I have suffered from cold sores since i was a child. I usually get them every 3 months, like clockwork. Since i started taking 1000mg Lysine 3x daily and a B-Complex vitamin, they've become less recurrent. When I feel an outbreak coming on, I up the dosage to about every 3 hours.
I recently puchased Viroxyn. It was pretty pricey (about $40 for 3 small ampules). It was a miracle!!! You apply it at the first sign, 1 time and it stops those nasty bastards dead in it's tracks! The sore healed in about 2 days!
Imagine my surprise when I discovered the active ingredient was Benzalkonium .13%! Basically, it was Bactine!
Here's what you do:
1: mix 1 tsp Bactine & 1 tsp 90% alcohol
2: dip a couple of Q-tips in
3: massage gently, but firmly into the sore
4: relax!!! stress isn't gonna help you any!
i did this about 4x a day and the sore went from a red bump to a tiny scab within hours. Totally healed in 2.5 days! And in total it cost me about $6 instead of $40!
I'm sorry this post is so long, but I know what it's like to suffer from this embarassing ailment and felt I should share this discovery. Please try it. I hope you all have the same results I have. Good luck!

I Have a cold sore right now and I'm doing the old Ice thing. It has worked for me in the past, but I'm not sure if it is working now. I am definitely about to give the bactine alcohol thing a try. God I hate cold sores.

just hearing you people try to help each other is really great, I get them all the time real big ones. I'll try the bactine. Do you guys know anything about TRILEX?

Trilex definitely works if you catch it at the tingle or when you get your first blisters. It dries the cold sore out from the inside, you can feel it working, it feels a little weird but it works. You can find it here:

http://www.naturalwellbeing.com

I also put tea tree oil on it just to make sure it stayed dry and to keep it from forming.

just use the bactine it really works, i was sick of spending 100$ a year, the lidocaine in bactine had a great numbing affect but you can also use nasal sprays or visine, esp. if you get a sore in you eye or nose, its the same active ingred. and it works like a charm! I dont cut my bactine w/ rubbing alcohol but i suppose it couldnt hurt!

Bactine is awesome! I get unbearably painful herpes outbreaks on scrotum. I put the bactine liquid on and it not only numbs the pain but makes it heal much faster. It is the best thing I've ever used. Allowed me to stop valtrex.

I get a cold sore 1-2 times per year, the only day when came and the frustration set in. Looked like a bad one. I figured I would give Bactine a try. This is the greatest find ever! Unbelievable, my cold sore went from becoming a big ugly to almost gone within a day. Crazy

OMG!! Thank you so much! I get these nasty buggers on my nose and it is humiliating, anything that will lessen that time is God-sent.

O..m..g.. Suffered from cold sores my entire life. They used to get do swollen, it'd appear like I had a fat lip and couldn't even close my mouth. I've used Abreva but it still lasted fairly long. Nail polish remover didn't work. I used to have so much success with those little vials, but Walgreens and CVS doesn't seem to carry them anymore. I found the suggestion to use Bactine online and oh my gosh does it work. I didn't get the usual tingling, but in Tuesday morning, I felt a little hot spot on my lip. I was st work and couldn't attack it with anything right away. By the end if the day, I had a full blown cold sore appear. That night, I soaked a cotton pad with Bactine and gently massaged it into the area for awhile. Covered it in Abreva when dry. The next day, no more swollen cold sore! It was still tender, but it wasn't obvious at all. It just looked like chapped lips if anything. I couldn't believe it. Today is Thursday, and I think cold sore itself is completely gone so that tomorrow I can focus on healing the scabs (I swear by Blistex lip medex for chapped lips, and attribute it to the reason my cold sore outbreaks have become minimal... I used to get them.because of cracked lips.) So excited that it works. So much cheaper-those vials were so expensive. I hate writing these things but I had to. I hate cold sores and understand the desire to get rid of them immediately.

THANK YOU to all who wrote about this. I get cold sores a couple times a year on my lips. Painful, annoying, I would not say embarassing as it is just part of our being human to sometimes get these things. In any event, I used 50% bactine and 50% rubbing alcohol applied using q-tips as soon as possible after the first itching. Cuts a one week or more sor edown to just a couple days, and it does not break out as much. Saved me a TON of money over the $20 three vial stuff. I will say a prayer for every one of you, and really apreciate the idea!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! This is a WONDER cure! I just finished treatment (prescribed pill plus Abreva plus L-Lysine supplement) and despite all of that, it took 2 weeks to completely heal. No sooner had it finished healing then I got two (TWO!) more just to the side of the one that had healed. They started popping up late Friday night. I read this forum on Saturday morning (yesterday), ran to the drug store and purchased Bactine and 91% rubbing alcohol. I also purchased Lysine lip oinment. I have been using Q-tips to apply a combo of the alcohol and Bactine every hour on the hour followed by a coating of Abreva when that dries topped off with the Lysine ointment. Not only are they already healing, they never grew in to a nasty, unsightly sore! I know they're there but they are easily covered up with some ointment.
UNBELIEVABLE! I am SO happy!

I only tried this out of desperation (my local pharmacy was out of Abreva), but I am amazed. Why doesn't everyone know about this? Abreva has been effective at lessening the severity of my outbreaks, but Bactine seemed to completely stop the development of the sore immediately upon application.
