Everybody is different, what may work 4 me may not work 4 u.I read that u shouldn't pop them, but i do, if i don't they just keep getting bigger and spreading, i use a sterilised needle,i then apply ice because viruses can't survive in extreme cold.i then apply surgical spirits this cleans the area, next i apply tea tree oil because it has excellent anti bacterial properties.I also use paw paw ointment as a lip balm everyday, this has an enzyme that inhibits the herpes virus, this reduces the amount of outbreaks i experience. The paw paw ointment also stops the scab forming & sticking out like a sore thumb.I get outbreaks when I'm stressed out, rundown,or dehydrated i find if i drink plenty of water i have a lot less infections.try lemon balm,as well as fresh garlic, there is quite a lot of natural treatments, like i said at the start of this post we're all different some of us get huge outbreaks as well as extreme swelling, some of us just get a little blister u have 2 find what works 4 u.

Good morning, and it is a good morning because since i posted my comments yesterday i have been treating my cold sore just how i described i do it with the only difference being i held a fresh slice of lemon against my lip 4 about 15 minutes ,this does sting a little, but it has definitely made a big difference.the blister is gone there is no redness and no discomfort.so if u r like me and would rather not use medication u could try the natural approach first,of course if u get the mega outbreaks like some poor buggers do then medication might b your best option.maybe a combination of natural and prescription treatment will have a faster result Im about 2 go 2 the chemist 2 buy some lemon balm tablets as well as lemon balm ointment, might even try the lemon balm tea it is said 2 have many beneficial health properties.i hope somebody gets some relief like i did this is the quickest iv'e ever gotten rid of a cold sore.Im 43yrs old and have been trying different treatments most of my life and this is the best result i have ever had.Good luck.

I responded to another comment on this board and was just looking back at some of these older posts. If you feel the early tingle symptom just before the cold sore develops, it's so much easier than going thru what some of you are describing, and just prevent it before it starts. I think there's probably a couple of really good remedies out there that can prevent it. Someone on this board said to forget Abreva, it doesn't work, but that's not true for everyone. It actually doesn't work for me either but it does for someone I know. What I use is Cold Sores Begone, that prevents it for me every time and for a few people I've recommended it to also. You can buy it online.

yea i just had it it lasted more than 3 days! today is the 5th but im sure it wouldve been way longer if i hadnt did what i did. my lip swoll up like 3 times its size i didnt even wanna leave the house i went to the doctor but all her game me was antibiotics and stuff to kil the infection but as far as the swelling he said to use a warm rag let it sit on the infected area for 5 min then use a ice pack on it. i used ice the 2nd day and it went down then it came back in the middle of the night. i know those blisters are annoying but the newest one that came was my relief. that huge amount of pus that makes up the swelling has to come out of that little blister.. maybe big one in your case but it mines it was small. and it was very very painful but it worked and right now im getting ready to go 2 work for the 1st time in a week beacuse i sweezed all that annoying pus out. take antibiotics to stop the infection because i belive the stuff inide is very contagious and can effect the rest of your mouth. for sumt reason it didnt spread on me so be very careful. anyway the heat will oipen you pores more and u might c a lil bit of pus on the top of the blister closest to the swelling. if u wipe it pus will come back. i dont wanna say exactly how but find a way to slowly manipulate that stuff out. at 1st it seemed like it was takin 4 ever then with a lot of warm water and patience and a lot of owww big clumps of pus and clear liquid came pouring out it was so nasty but it worked.

Mine are huge and always have been. Nothing makes them go quicker, and nothing makes the pain any better. The swelling goes inside my mouth, where i cant put anything on them!! The only thing i use is compeed patches as these just cover them up a bit better and stops you touching it and speading it. But its just time!!!! ITS HORRIBLE

Well today was the day from hell! Never before have I skipped work because of a cold sore but this was the worst outbreak I've ever had, covering almost of my full bottom lip, also making it triple in size. I'm a teacher and there was no way I was going to let my students see me like that!

The reasons why I'm posting are twofold. First of all, while I wouldn't wish cold sores on anyone, I can't begin to say how comforting to know that I am not alone in this as cold sores feel like such a lonely disease. Secondly, I wanted to let you all know what I did today today that has already (meaning in 9 hours) has made a DRAMATIC difference in the appearance of my cold sores. We'll see how I look tomorrow but as of now, I am finally confident enough to leave my apartment!

First of all let me say that this was an all-day endeavor. These cold sores literally took a day out of my life. The bulk of them started 3 days ago but yesterday they spread and a couple more were still forming when I woke up (awful!). Anyway I woke up an immediately applied ice to them in a plastic bag. This immediately helped the swelling. I iced again another 6 times throughout the day. I also woke up and took a 1000 mg Lysine pill (and repeated that midday and in the evening). I know you shouldn't do this, but I also applied nail polish to any emerging sores twice today and I cannot believe it but even though they are a little red still, they actually never erupted! In between icing, I also used green tea bags on lips and let them soak for about 1/2 an hour each (did this twice). Oh yeah, I also downed a ton of garlic powder diluted in water (took it as a shot) as I heard that it has antiviral properties. Lastly, I put neosporin on the scabs that have now formed and honestly, I look like a COMPLETELY different person from this morning.

As you can see, I tried a lot of home remedies today and like I say, I don't know yet if they'll stand the test of time, but all I know is that Im about to pack for a beach weekend that as of this morning, was thinking about skipping!

Now lets all pray for a cure!

Hey guys,
I've been having cold sores since I was very young. Now I'm 27, and it seems that in the last few years, my sores have been getting larger, and occurring more frequently. I notice that anytime I'm depressed/stressed out or about to get my period, they are more likely to appear. The stress thing is the biggest cause.
I've had one for the past two days now, and it began to swell last night. I've been on a mission to get rid of this thing. So I started picking at it, squeezing out the clear liquid, and applying hydrogen peroxide to kill the bacteria. It hurts, but that's a small price to pay for the embarrassment of being seen with it. I've been icing it throughout the day for 10+ minutes to get the swelling down. I'm taking lysine, I got tea tree oil ready to apply, I got a mix of carmex/vaseline to keep scabs from forming... I even did a scolding hot water + salt mixture! that one hurt...
From what I've read, you're supposed to stay away from chocolate, grains, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, and peas.. and essentially anything that is acidic. A high-alkaline diet is recommended (here's a great site that lists lots of alkaline-rich foods: http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm )
I'm not a big fan of prescription stuff either, because I think that takes us away from really embracing the natural remedies that are all around us.
Hope this helps.
I'll try to remember to come back and give an update on my condition.

Yes my lip does the same thing. It swells to be rediculously huge. I'm not sure why.

My lip gets so swollen that I have to use straw to eat. Iknow how painful and embarrassing it can be.Only good thing is it doesn't last more than 3-4 days. I never know what causes it and when it is going to happen. Good luck.

well I've been getting coldsores since I was about 3&i hate them so much; they make me feel rough and embarrassed to go out with this on my lip... And there's only two things I think work; 1st rub ice on it for 2 minutes without getting an ice burn and then dab milk onto it being careful not to spread it anywhere else.. I hope this works for you it does for me:)

Having cold sores is the worst. It sounds like you've tried a lot of remedies already, but if you get one again check out our video for some useful tips on how to get rid of them as quickly as possible. Some of the tips are a little more… let's just say, creative.

Im in highschool and i get them quite often. No i didnt get them from kissing anyone, i drank my dad's soda when he wasnt looking when i was in elementary school. I have it now... Soooo embarrassing. Looks like i got punched in the mouth :( The swelling is horrible! Gahh! Im confused about whether to just leave it alone or not. Too many people saying and giving different advice. Ugh. Especially because people hear herpes and think of the other kind -_- so annoying. Any advice?

I have valtrex now as an ointment and pills and it still takes my cs at least a week to 10 days to go away. I have had them for over 20 years now and they seem to be getting worse and more often..... I really wish there was a cure for herpes!! They are so tiring..... I have shared the virus with 2 of my 4 children and pray that my 1 year old doesn't get them. It is so hard on a kid cause you have to really be careful not to pop it or touch it and then go to the restroom and accidentally wipe wrong cause it can turn into genital herpes. That is my worse fear about it.

I take Lysine also but it doesn't make mine go away any quicker really, but i use to take it everyday and i didn't have as many outbreaks. I just pray for a cure!!!!!!!!

I have been getting cold sores ever since I can remember. It lead to me missing a lot of high school since I was so embarrassed since people usually make comments about you having an std. My outbreaks usually occur when the weather conditions are harsh because I almost never get them during spring or summer. And since I live in Wisco, we were in the negatives this week and I woke up this morning with a cold sore already forming. I had 2 g left of Valtrex from my previous prescription so I took those but that didn't seem to do anything this time. Seeing as it is 12 hours later and my lip has tripled in size with at least 3 blisters forming. It is now Wednesday and I need this completely gone by Monday because I have a speech to give. The time in between is very painful and I haven't found any home or store bought remedies that help. There's needs to be a cure for these suckers!!!

i have one too...and of course its swollen...mik jagger status...and thats why i am on this site trying to find a way to get this bad boy to go down...i use hydrogen peroxide on my lip that tends to help dry it us..with a q-tip of course. also i found at cvs they now have cold sore patch's...kinda pricey $13-something for 6 patch's. they only thing is you cant use them when you have swelling on when its healing..they are see threw and for me i love to cover them up with lipstick as much as i can so i am looking forward to seeing if these patches work..they are made by abreva and they non medicated ..they are like a see threw band-aid
