I think I see a little white spot/bump on my lower lip just now and googled.. found this site and started readin. i have an orientation for college in less than a week and I dont want some people's first impression of me as a cold sore girl!! well i cant get my hand on any kind of medicine now.. but i have nail polish remover and i hope. please. go away just as a little bump and don't come back!!! I'm also going to start eating a lot and a lot of yogurt!!
My lips have been VERY dry for the past few days (my lips are generally dry and it's a pain to find something that works.. and if I do find something that works.. it only works for a few weeks) sigh!

Put nail polish remover on it with a q-tip. I did this on and off for 2 hours the day it first appeared and by the next day it was still there but much flatter and not red.

Instead of Tylenol or aspirin, you'd be better off taking Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) or Naproxen (Aleve, because the other two medications do not have antiinflammatory actions.

i suffer from cold sores and i found a great cream that really works. its called carmex ointment. all you have to do is apply it as often as you like and it will really help. it worked for me in just a few days. its only $5 or $6 and its worth every cent in my opinion. hope it helps others as well as it helped me

I have been dealing with cold sores for a long time now... the only thing I do to keep them in check is to soak the area with listerine (it's likely to be the alcohol that does the work)... it works best if you catch it before the actual sore develops but it also helps them heal much faster.

This burns like hell but it works really well.

I just take a tissue and soak it with listerene and then press hard into the sore area for 30 seconds or so.

It's weird that only one other person suggested using alcohol. It works so well.

I have been getting cold sores for the last 4 years everytime I get stressed out or when the season goes from Summer to Fall.
I have tried everything to get rid of them but nothing really worked... until this time.
On Monday I noticed the hated bumps. So I figured nothing works for me lets get creative. I mixed some 99% Alcohol with Peroxide with Nail Polish Remover with 2 crushed Tylenol Tablets and finally with 500g of L-Lysine. I also took 2000g of L-Lysine.
Funny enough by Monday night the blisters were scabs.
On Tuesday I then treated the scabs with an Aloe Vera cream that I mixed some L-Lysine with and applied that generously to the sore. By Tuesday night the sore was now just a figure of the past.
Needless to say I was shocked that my "mixture" worked and really happy (my coldsores usually take 13 days to heal).

I got cold sore ..... again and I don't know what to do. When it started to develop I tried everything - took Lysine, put some ice on it, then tea bag, alcohol.... tried pretty much everything I could find on the web in last couple of years, even Valtrex, spent money on Abreva and still got it fully developed! Please help! I don't want to spend anymore money on something that doesn't work

ive been getting cold sores since i was 11 and everything i try only seems to work the first few times, then i have to find something else to fix them. By now i have an entire makeup bag full of things designed to treat, dry, and soothe the blisters and i just go through the works when i get one, so heres what i use:
nail polish remover - works best if the blister is popped already, it dries it out but it works just as well as rubbing alcohol, etc.
Purell Hand sanitizer - again i think this is just the alcohol but the sanitizing aspect helps as well
burts bees herbal blemish stick - has tea tree oil in it along with various other drying agents
Virasoothe- this is from new zealand and it apparently has helped thousands of people almost completely stop their coldsores (www.nzessentials.com ), it didnt stop mine completely but ive only been using it for about a month (ive had about 5 coldsores back to back) and it seems to be making them (the sores) act very strangely (they started showing up places i only had them the VERY FIRST time i had an outbreak, but they were very small, then the cream would make them go away in 3 days or so, im hoping its just eradicating all the nerve cells that have the virus)
Zovirax- helps to dry out the sores and speeds up the whole process
L-lysine - 3000-4000mg every day when i have a sore
Advil/Tylenol- alternate for pain/swelling
Tea Bags - help bring down swelling, soothe

in any case, thats mainly my thing. I do try and keep them dry unless i have the virasoothe or zovirax on them, and i rub both of those in very vigorously. good luck
ive read some things baout getting laser treatments to help stop reoccurences, im nearly at that point!

I didnt have the right stuff around when it happened but had bought some Ocean Potion Burn relief Ice for my kids sunburn. It has Aloe Vera / Lidocaine / Tea Tree Extract.. It felt good and it appeared to help after it was full blown..

Why on Earth would you pop the thing and let it spread over your skin? Don't touch it, dont break it, cover it with toothpaste if you take a shower. Keep it as dry as possible. Dont "pop" anything until its too late.. then keep it covered with nail polish remover and aloe and campho phenique(sp). If its not on the lip get the small round bandaids to keep it covered at night and if you go out: it helps for your feeling about how it looks and keeps you from touching it in your sleep.

I get cold sores about twice a year - and I have one right now !!! I have learned to live with them. I have tried abreva, zovirax, denivir, tea bags, l-lysine paste, nothing seems to work for me. But keeping the area moist does help the healing. It is a part of my life. UGH !!!!

Well I have never experienced cold sores before but I just went through a big move and I am now under a lot of stress. Late last week the corner of my lip started itching, I did not know what it was. A cold sore soon formed, so i put chapstick on it (burts bee wax)

I just started to feel another one forming on my upper lip and I am flying home to see my girlfriend on less than a week! Is it possible to clear it up by then.

How dies this sound for a plan of action:

L-Lysine (1000mg) 3x a day
Echinacea (125mg) 3x a day
Vit-C (1000mg) 3 x a day
Apply Rubbing alcohol with Q-tip 5x a day
Apply Abreva 5x a day
No peanuts/milk etc

Anything else i can do to help. I started icing it today...how often should i keep icing it? Thanks!

Ok, so every month I can almost predict to the second when I am going to get a cold sore. Lysine 4000 mg a day, vitamin c and zine have all been incorporated into my diet. I eat tons of yogurt, consume red wine in moderation and exercise. I don't smoke, I eat an organic healthy diet and STILL get cold sores. One week before my cycle it's inevitable. I have tried Valtrex, used ear wax, nail polish remover, ether, you name it-it's been done. Just wanted to let anyone know if you are in the same boat-Viroxyn is a miracle. It is now available in generic brand thru Walgreens and has been the only thing to keep the sore from getting enormous, painful and taking weeks to heal. My cold sores are now minimal, barely visible and heal within 3 days, leaving little sign except chapped lips. An alternative is Wet Ones hand sanitizing antibacterial wipes. They contain less of the benzo chloride by volume, but work in a pinch.....Hope this helps a little.......

in my kindergarten picture i have a cold sore. i'm now 44. my cold sores get bigger on camphophaneque (sp). i've tried every remenedy under the sun and the only thing i've found that works is 2,000 mg of l-lysine at the first sign and 2,000 mg every four hours until the cold sore is gone or until it fails to appear and the pain disappears. i think everyone is different . . . what works for you might not work for me.

I have a cold sore at the bottom of my mouth. It isn't visible so I'm not very self-conscious about it. I put nail polish remover followed by abreva and it seemed to stop the itching. I will repeat this tonight and see what happens. I hope its gone by tomorrow

OKAY. cold sores are terrible. they make me self conscious and feel ugly. generally i thought abreva worked but this time it didnt in the least. i've read up, and toothpaste (NOT the gel) should dry it out overnight. and i always applied hydrogen peroxide on it and it dried out. i hope i have helped... someone really needs to find a cure!
