Crestor made me think I was having a heart attack and caused me to spend an overnight stay and many tests. When I started Crestor, I was happy to finally get off of Zocor. Zocor caused leg and muscle pain. Crestor caused panic attacks, vision problems, memory loss and insomnia. The insomnia was horrible! I think I'll take my chances with cholesterol.

I have been taking Crestor for 10 weeks. It has caused horrendous vision problems which will require corrective surgery in a few days. I agree - I'll take my chances with cholesterol.

I have been having extreme problems with my vision and have been taking statins off and on since last october. It seems that when I start up on the statins, I start seeing black spots in front of my eyes that can shimmer at times. What are your symptoms and what diagnosis did you get for the corrective surgery? I am desperate and need information and I very much appreciate any insight you can give me.

Yes, my vision problems have persisted since 2008. However, they have improved. I no longer have double vision, after images, etc; however, I am still plagued with visual snow. I believe that my vision improvement was due to stopping statins altogether and taking massive doses of CoQ10...statins deplete the body of CoQ10. Double vision is an extremely rare side effect of statin use; however, since most docs don't understand this, it might be more common than reported. I am still taking a superabsobable coq10 that is SAFE to take in high doses of 400 mgs per day (Vitaline or Integrative therapetics brand). Anyone taking statins and experiencing vision problem should stop immediately in my opinion due to permanent damage to vision...try taking niacin to lower cholestrol instead.

Christina,
Your symptoms are consistent with toxic optic neuropathy/ optic neuritis . As you
Know statins lowers cholesterol which is needed in the brain for the production for myelin . In some people the myelin production is halted by low cholesterol from statins and you start noticing the visual symptoms. You are right stopping statins and using coq10 300-400 mg a day. It takes years for the destroyed neurons to start functining again and vision will not come back as it was before you started statins.
If you have to use statins for any reasons you have to use it with very absorbable
Coq10or ubiquinol at high doses as well as gigh doses of vitamin D and magnesium.
As far as for Mary low cholesterol in brain interfere with serotonin receptors in brain that cause depression/ anxiety/ panic attacks. If you have to use a statin use pravastatin instead of crestor since it doesnt lower your cholesterol as much as crestor.

Interesting theory about the toxic optic neuropathy. I have been to see the best optic neurologist in Seattle and have been examined by several eye doctors. All doctors say that my examination is normal, including the visual field exam, and that I do not have optic neuritis. Perhaps I stopped the statins before it caused full blown optic neuritis? However, it is still true that at the time of onset, my vitamin D levels were EXTREMELY low (I did not realize it). Since then, I have taken massive doses of vitamin D, co-enzyme 10, and a good multivitamin as well as tumeric. I also drink a vegetable juice high in folic acid and DHEA every day. My vision has improved substantially but I agree, my vision will never again be normal. There is research being conducted at the University of California on Visual Snow to determine the cause. I think I will pass your comments on to those people...interesting theory about the mylen sheathe. For those of you out there with visual snow, there is a support forum at thosewithvisualsnow.com . If anyone out there has developed visual snow as a result of taking statins, I would like to know as well as the researchers at the University of California. Please email me if you are having these symptoms. Visual snow is also associated with after images, flashes of light, and migraine like aura that persists over time. As for me, treatment with vitamin D, coq10, and vitamins improved my condition (but I still have issues). Others on the forum have not been so lucky.

Your eyes MIGHT be experiencing a toxic effect of the medicine. Unfortunately, not many doctors are aware of vision problems as a side effect to the drug. I don't know if you have tried fish oil, high fiber (soluable fiber), exercise, niacin (if you can tolerate it) and weight loss to control your cholesterol, but I was able to lower mine this way. I lost 50 lbs through a high vegetable diet with protein in a clinical trial at Metagenics with a hops product. The weight loss lowered my risk factors for heart disease significantly on all levels and improved my health beyond description. Five years after taking statins, I still suffer from significant vision problems from taking statins. My eyes might have been damaged by toxicity to that drug. It also might weaken eye muscles and cause double vision (a rare side effect, but perhaps not as rare since docs are not aware of it). I had double vision, but this has gone away when I stopped statins. My other vision problems remain 5 years later. Be careful!!!

Has anyone had hives as a result of taking Crestor 10mg. I have had 5 episodes with 3 having to be taken to hospital. Doctors have taken me off vitamins but I am now thinking it might be the Crestor.

Christina some patients who experienced double vision from statins also
Experienced visual symptoms at same time.
What happens is that muscle around your eye enlarge and weken which
Causes double vision but these enlarged muscles press on your optic
Nerve at the apex of your orbit and irritates the myelin sheath of the optic
Nerve thus causing symptoms.
When you stop taking statins the muscle go back to normal in few weeks
And the double vision returns to normal but it take years for the damaged
Nerve fibers to grow back and if they grow back.
If you had orbital MrI at the time when you had your double vision and visual
Symptoms have your MRI reviewed by another specialist looking for any
Muscle compression, irritation or pressing of the muscles on your nerve
At the apex of your orbit where the nerve exits the orbit to the brain.
If you can find this on your MRI you might have a case against the drug manufacturer
Company.
Just one thing, was your visual symtoms in one eye or both?

Unfortunately, it is in both eyes. I have visual snow in both eyes, but no longer have double vision, which did appear with statin use and disappeared with discontinuation of the drug. I did have a brain MRI but I did not have a specific MRI on the orbital area. Am wondering if the brain MRI would cover the orbital area. You are the first person who has offered any explanation of my problems. It is something that I should pursue with a doctor.

I had too an optic neuritis/ neuropathy in one eye and i was taking zocor at
That time. For 2 years. I attributed it to zocor but nobody beleived me since
I was having muscle aches and severe migraines and eye pain.
I stopped it anyway and recovered about 75 perc of vision over 2 years.
Then i was started on pravastatin and 2 years later i started having severe
Migraines with black spots in central vision that shimmers. I stopped
Immediately pravastatin and used high dose of coq10 and migraines were gone
And recovered vision in few months.
Since my LDL is very high i was placed on a low dose crestor and after 6 months
I started having static vision in same eye i stopped crestor immediately and
My static vision improved.
With all episodes i had sanxiety attacks at same time which are gone when not
Using statins.
Unfortunately my MRI did not show any optic nerve enhencement and so till
Now nobody beleives me that statins are causing my vision problems.
I did not have any diplopia but had severe muscle aches and fatigue and migraines
At times of vision problems. I am 99 perc sure its from statin use too

I took Crestor for 16 days and suffered energy loss and started passing dark urine, I immediately stopped. Take care with Crestor. I talked to the company, they say their policy is NOT to refund any money.

I started Crestor and took it approx 2 weeks. Woke up 1 morning and everything was like a haze. Got to work and asked if the office looked Hazy to anyone and of course it did not. After about 1 more week I stopped taking Crestor. It has now been about 2 weeks since I have been off of it and nothing has changed. I can not even go to a grocery store, etc. When I walk in everything is hazy and I have double vision, then I start feeling sick and have had to actually leave a store. I knew it was Crestor as I was fine until 2 weeks after starting it. I now have a eye Dr. appt in 2 days (this Sat 9/7/13) thinking I was going to be getting glasses to solve the problems but now see that is probably not the case at all as it appears I now have " Permanent" damage. I feel sick to my stomach right now just sitting here writing this and dont know what to do now.
