Cataract surgery

I had cataract surgery on my left eye twelve days ago. The doctor inserted a Restor multi-focal lens. Since then, both my reading and distance vision in the repaired eye have been poor. Although my eye tests out at 20/25 for both reading and distance, I can't read book text or road signs while driving, and images are blurry with double vision in the operational eye. Also there is an occluded black crescent area in my left peripheral vision that the doctors attribute to the shadow of the edge of the new lens. The doctors who have examined me since the surgery, don't see any of this as being a serious problem, although they will not give me any estimates about how long these symptoms are likely to persist. I am very concerned, however, since I am scheduled for surgery on the other eye on January 8, and I am afraid that after the surgery I may not be able to either read or drive.

The primary reason for the surgery was not because of the extent of the cataract vision impairment as much as it was a response to the fact that I am extremely far-siighted. For many years I used monovision prescriptions with extreme success. Before the surgery my contact lens prescription was +8.5-right and +9.0-left. With that prescription, I was fully functional except for highway night driving (I could drive on highways and local streets during the day with no difficulty, and had no difficulty with reading or other tasks).

I really wonder why I have consented to surgery if my vision afterwards may be much worse than before and might make me unable to drive, read or work. I really need feedback on this because there is little time left for a decision if it turns out that I should cancel the surgery.

With one of the new reStors and a competent surgeon, you should not be having this problem. The lens can be re-situated in the capsule if it is not centered properly, for example, and it can also be removed and replaced with a monofocal, but before asking for these things, check out the often very detailed discussions--plus access to surgeons who will answer your questions--here:
