I am a medical anthropologist, breast cancer researcher, and director of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease. I also the co-author of the book Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras.
Wearing tight bras for long periods of time daily is the leading cause of breast cancer. We believe it has to do with the impairment of lymphatic drainage from the breasts, leading to fluid accumulation, cysts (filled with the backed-up lymph fluid), pain, tissue toxification, and ultimately cancer. A Harvard study in 1991 showed that bra-free women had about half the incidence of breast cancer than women who wear bras. That means we could cut the incidence in half, saving over 100,000 US women alone from getting this terrible disease simply by changing clothing habits and ending the constriction of the breasts by bras.
However, the Komen Foundation is calling the bra/cancer link a myth without having any evidence or studies to refute this link. In fact, they are committed to not researching the bra, and encourage women to wear them.
The ACS is doing the same thing as the Komen Fdtn, ignoring this existing research, and calling the link a myth. This is a crime and cover-up.
Realize that the prevention of this disease and its treatment are in conflict. The cancer treatment industry wants drug and surgical answers they can charge for, not free lifestyle changes that eliminate the cause of this epidemic. And they have partnered with the bra industry, which now funds cancer research. So long as there is no further research, they hope to avoid the class action lawsuits that will come from damaged women, much like what the tobacco industry experienced. No research, no lawsuits, they hope.
So instead of being honest, the Komen Fdtn is ignoring the most important and impactful thing women do to their breasts, namely binding them and pushing them into a fashionable shape with constrictive bras. Actually, they are not just ignoring it. They are saying it is false, a myth, not worthy of research or consideration, and makes no sense.
Komen should be calling for more research into the bra/cancer link, not dismissing it out of hand with no supporting evidence, and with research already suggesting that we can end this epidemic if we end the habit of women constricting their breasts for long hours each day.
BTW, corsets were also killing women for centuries by constricting and compressing the body and impairing circulation. The bra is a breast corset. Also keep in mind that it took 30 years for cigarettes to be admitted as a cause of lung cancer after the initial research discovery, while medical "experts" of the day denied the link and actually sold cigarettes. History repeats itself, this time with the bra.(The ACS tells women "wear your pink bra" and sells mastectomy bras on their website.)
Bottom line: We live in a culture where women are brainwashed by the fashion industry to feel they need artificially shaped breasts and this is leading to disease, while the cancer treatment industry looks the other way and profits from the damage caused.
