My dad has Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. He has been on tarceva for 2.5 weeks and on the 14th day he became very lethargic and slept most of the next 48 hours (which brings us to today). I am concerned, but his doctor says extreme fatigue is normal. Maybe, but still very scary.

Dear People,
I will pray for and your loved ones to be able to cope with the uncertainty of not knowing what the cancer will do next. I have a question for you. Did you or your loved one smoke cigarettes? This is so disturbing to me. I smoke and am trying to quit. However as strange as this may sound I am afraid to quit. Recently I know two women who quit smoking and within 3 years they both were diagnosed with cancer. Am I crazy, or does it seem like healthy air (into a persons lungs) seems to speed up cancer growth?
I must be so off base. I can't even believe I wrote this.

My dad found out he has lung cancer. He is refusing treatment and isn't much of talking about his cancer. He had to empty 2 liters of fluid from his lungs but hasn't been back. Does the fluid come back again? Does everyone lose their voice when you get lung cancer? I was hoping he would get the same treatment for when he had colon cancer because he beat that. Any advice?

MY MOTHER WAS DIGNOSED WITH LUNG CANCER IN 1991 AND HAD SURGERY - REMOVED ONE LUNG. DID WONDERFUL UNTIL 2002 AND LUNG CANCER APPEARED IN THE OTHER LUNG. FROM 2002 AND 2006 THE CANCER DID NOT GROW OR SPREAD. IN FEBRUARY 2002, IT STARTED TO GROW. HAD CHEMO AND RADIATION AND IT DIDN'T HELP. SHE TOOK TARCEVA FOR 6 WEEKS AND PASSED AWAY. FROM WHAT I HEAR, IT CAN BE A MIRACLE DRUG TO 13% OF THE PEOPLE -- OTHERS IT IS DEATH. I WOULD REALLY WEIGHT THE OPTIONS BEFORE TAKING THIS DRUG. I FEEL MOTHER WOULD HAVE LIVED LONGER WITHOUT TREATMENT. IF ANYONE HAS HAD A GOOD EXPERIENCE WITH THIS DRUG, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

I have sisterr-in-law who has been recently diagnosed with lung cancer. The doctor seems to think is a stage 3b. She will have her pet scan on Wednesday 9/21. Her treatment plan will be discussed then. Can the doctors usually tell before the pet scan is done. We have been praying for her. I reached over 400 churches either by phone or voice mail to pray. I believe in miracles. However, I know that God's Will is the perfect will and we must accept it. I have also, seen God do miracles in my life and in the lives of people I know and love. I know that nothing is impossible for God.

Time magazine reports:

At the American Cancer Society's annual meeting in Manhattan last week, Statistician E. Cuyler Hammond posed a question: "Are we batting our heads against a stone wall—an insurmountable barrier?" On the basis of crude figures he reported: "We are faced with a frustrating fact. Ten short years ago, 177,000 Americans died of cancer. This year it is estimated that 243,000 Americans will die of this disease."

The Time magazine report was presented in 1955. Now look at the death toll in 2007. Growing Astoundingly!

I just called by telephone the Tarceva patient phone line and the nurse told me that Tarceva should not be taken together with Avastin because FDA did not approved such a combination. However I read that Penny has taken both, together, and is doing very well? Is that right Penny? What is yur opinion about the Tarceva comment?

I hope you both are able to bring brightness to you father's time right now. right now. I've been on the Tarceva 150 for 2 weeks and I think the cycle you describe is very much like my own.You didn't mention weight gain or loss. I've lost some 10 or 12 lbs but it's been more a pickup of water and maybe fat. And I think with that loss a loss of energy. I lay in bed each morning planning what I don't really get accomplished. I think of it a little like a bucking horse, had to get back on when it's still bucking !
