I have been complaining about lack of quality of life since my left modified radical mastectomy of 1984. I was 37 years old, single/divorced, no children, and competing in the employment market and in the romance department. I have been moderately to severely depressed since then. Although fortunate to have lived this long, it has affected every single aspect of my life, from self-image to employability! Many friends with just a lumpectomy, have died within 5-10 years from surgery date. How do you spell relief?

Isis, I think you spell relief by visiting a psychologist. There an awful lot of good men out there who really don't care about a lumpectomy, and if they do care that says something importantly negative about that man.

A diagnosis of cancer might bother an employer if he or she knew, but you don't have to disclose it. Do you think it's possible that it's just the experience of having cancer, especially under your circumstances, that triggered the depression? It's very, very common.

Whether you have a lumpectomy or mastectomy doesn't affect whether the cancer spreads or not. If you got it in time, you got it in time either way. It sounds as if you did, and you still have a long life in front of you. Get yourself to a psychologist who understands (your surgeon or oncologist can probably refer you). There are very specific things you can do with a psychologist's help to get you past this awful burden that life placed on you so very unfairly. It isn't the lumpectomy, Isis. It's the C word.
