It is a sad state of affairs when the rich are no longer willing to help the poor. Shame on the Susan G. Komen Fund.

Critics point out that Komen's new rules were created after the hiring of its new senior vice president for public policy Karen Handel, who stated during her unsuccessful 2010 Georgia gubernatorial campaign that "I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood" and who pledged to eliminate funding for breast and cervical cancer screenings provided by Planned Parenthood.[55][56] Komen founder Nancy Brinker is a longtime GOP donor with strong Republican ties and served as ambassador to Hungary under George W. Bush, and the decision came shortly after Komen unveiled a new partnership with the policy-making arm of George W. Bushís presidential library.[57]

"In addition to pulling funds from Planned Parenthood for The Susan G. Komen Foundation also decided to stop funding embryonic stem cell research centers making it fully transparent the organization has evolved from non-political non-profit to a partisan advocacy organization.
That means the loss of $3.75 million to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine,$4.5 million to the University of Kansas Medical Center,$1 million to the U.S. National Cancer Institute,$1 million to the Society for Womenís Health Research, and $600,000 to Yale University. Thatís a loss of nearly $12 million dollars in research money to eradicate breast cancer this year alone."

WASHINGTON -- In a stunning break with First Amendment policy, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice. Initial reports from sources suggested that an ABC News camera was also prevented from taping the hearing; ABC has since denied that they sent a crew to the hearing.

Josh Fox, director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Gasland" was taken into custody by Capitol Hill police this morning, along with his crew, after Republicans objected to their presence, according to Democratic sources present at the hearing. The meeting of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment had been taking place in room 2318 of the Rayburn building.

HuffPost has obtained exclusive video of the arrest of Josh Fox. Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.), the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, can be heard at the end of the clip asking Republican Chairman Andy Harris (R-Md.) to halt the arrest and permit Fox to film the public hearing. Harris denies Miller's request as Fox is escorted out of the hearing in handcuffs.

On January 31, 2012, the Susan G. Komen organization cut its funding to Planned Parenthood, citing as its reason new rules governing the foundation that bar the support of organizations under congressional investigation, in this case an inquiry by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.)[49](Planned Parenthood is regularly audited to ensure compliance with the Hyde Amendment: these audits have never turned up any evidence of wrongdoing.)[50] According to Jeffrey Goldberg, multiple persons with inside knowledge of the decision-making process have told him that this rule was adopted only to create an excuse to cut off Planned Parenthood from the Komen Foundation.[51] The move drew sharp criticism from women's health advocacy groups, which said that the Susan G. Komen organization was putting politics ahead of women's health.[52][53] On February 1, 2012, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) both criticized and revoked their support for Komen in speeches in Congress.[54]

Critics point out that Komen's new rules were created after the hiring of its new senior vice president for public policy Karen Handel, who stated during her unsuccessful 2010 Georgia gubernatorial campaign that "I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood"

The primary campaign was particularly heated, and Handel's past membership in the gay rights group Log Cabin Republicans became an issue.[17] When Deal used her membership against her, Handel denied that she had ever been a member of the group, which was an important and influential constituency when she was a Commissioner. An investigation by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirmed that she was on the Log Cabin Republican's membership roles in 2003 and 2004, and that she had signed a questionnaire affirming her support for domestic partnership benefits.[18] Politifact rated her denial a "Pants on Fire" lie.[17] When asked by Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA-TV about her stance on gay rights, she said that she was against marriage and adoption for gays, and that gay people are not legitimate parents.[19]

[edit] Republican runoff electionThe Georgia Newspaper Partnership commissioned a poll which was published on August 7, 2010, which indicated that Handel led Nathan Deal 47% to 42% in the primary runoff campaign.[20] Handel lost the runoff election to Deal 50% to 49%--with about 2,500 votes separating them. Handel rejected a recount and conceded to Deal the next day.

[edit] Susan G. Komen for the CureIn April 2011, Ms. Handel was appointed senior vice president of public policy at breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure ("Komen"). In this position she is responsible for leading the organizationís federal and state advocacy efforts, including management of Advocacy Alliance.[21]

At the end of January 2012, Komen stated it will cut ties with the women's health organization Planned Parenthood.[22] The organization attributed the decision to a newly adopted policy not to fund organizations under investigation by a government agency. The House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee in September 2011 initiated an investigation into Planned Parenthoodís usage of federal funds which are precluded from financing the organizaton's abortion services.[23]

Media reports postulated that Handel, who had advocated defunding Planned Parenthood in her gubernatorial campaign, and pressure from anti-abortion groups played major roles in this move.[24] On February 2, 2012, Jeffrey Goldberg reported in The Atlantic that "three sources with direct knowledge of the Komen decision-making process told me that the rule was adopted in order to create an excuse to cut-off Planned Parenthood." Goldberg further reports that his sources indicated "The decision to create a rule that would cut funding to Planned Parenthood, according to these sources, was driven by the organization's new senior vice-president for public policy, Karen Handel, a former gubernatorial candidate from Georgia who is staunchly anti-abortion and who has said that since she is 'pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.'"[25]
