The advantages and disadvantages of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have been debated nearly as long as the treatment has been in use, especially the relationship between HRT and risk of cancer development. It is hoped that recently published studies will shed more light on this complex issue. Several large population studies suggest that there may be a small but increased risk of developing breast cancer in HRT users, especially in estrogen and progesterone users. This risk appears most pronounced after 5 years of HRT use. Endometrial cancer, which has long been associated with unopposed estrogen use, can be successfully prevented with the addition of progestins to the HRT regimen, provided it is given for at least 10 days each month. Estrogen replacement therapy has also been shown to significantly reduce the risk for colon cancer but not rectal cancers. Finally, a large prospective study has linked HRT with an increase in ovarian cancer mortality.

Birth control pills prevent pregnancy through several mechanisms, mainly by stopping ovulation. If no egg is released, there is nothing to be fertilized by sperm, and the woman cannot get pregnant. Most birth control pills contain synthetic forms of two female hormones: estrogen and progestin. These synthetic hormones stabilize a woman's natural hormone levels, and prevent estrogen from peaking mid-cycle. Without the estrogen bump, the pituitary gland does not release other hormones that normally cause the ovaries to release mature eggs.
Specifically, synthetic estrogen in the pill works to:
Stop the pituitary gland from producing follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in order to prevent ovulation.
Support the uterine lining (endometrium) to prevent breakthrough bleeding mid-cycle.
Meanwhile, synthetic progestin works to:
Stop the pituitary gland from producing LH in order to prevent egg release.
Make the uterine lining inhospitable to a fertilized egg.
Partially limit the sperm's ability to fertilize the egg.
Thicken the cervical mucus to hinder sperm movement (although this effect may not be key to preventing pregnancy).

There have been numerous studies to show both the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Improved quality of life is usually the main benefit given for HRT but also includes the decreased risk of certain diseases, including certain cancers. On the other hand, some of the negative highlights found in some studies seem to include the increased risk for certain cancers. There is also debate over whether bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is healthier than HRT with many less side effects. Bioidentical hormones are made to simulate our hormones so they are the exact same as the ones found in our bodies (chemical structure wise). Hormone replacement therapy is administered to those women whose estrogen and progesterone levels have dropped significantly due to menopause. Both these hormones are essential for the body and they have different roles. The hormone replacement therapy aims to reduce the effects of lack of estrogen and progesterone in the body.

I am a big believer in bioidentical hormone replacement only. Dr. Scott Shapiro with Dr. Scott's Weight Loss and Wellness is GREAT to consult with. www.doctorscotts.com
