So now the instructions are "Pat you on the head and leave it allll up to the experts." In other words, self-breast exam is now officially off the table.

I'm sorry ladies but I know too many women who were responsible patients and still found their own tumors. The truth is that sometimes they grow quite fast. Mine did. And if you have a fast-growing tumor, in spite of all of that, you might spot it first.

If you develop imflammatory breast cancer it is VERY likely that you will see the changes between exams.

Help yourself. Don't let the experts micro-manage your life to this extent. Don't stop doing breast exams. STATISTICALLY they're right -- if you look at THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of women -- they're right.

If you're the one with imflammatory breast cancer -- they're 100% wrong. It's not common but it has to be caught fast for you to survive.

But they're not going to put things that strongly in what amounts to a PR announcement, so we'll just have to be more supportive of each other.

Don't skip doing your own breast exam, and don't listen to the nonsense that they lead to "unnecessary breast biopsies." A doctor has to make that call, and he or she will not without significant suspicion. But if you find a lump and can't get your doctor to take it seriously -- find one who will. I know two people for whom that saved their lives -- that second opinion.
