This story is a sad testament to the paradigm of breast cancer. The BRCA is a gene defect in an anti-cancer mechanism and not a preordination of breast cancerís future development. There are so many environmental factors of chemicals and radiation we face in the modern world likely to induce breast cancer that those women with the BRCA gene defect are likely to face breast cancer in their future. Mammography is not reliably able to detect breast cancer at a stage early enough for the prevailing treatments to save the lives of most women. This results in the real fear this young women has faced and her desperate choice to mutilate herself by cutting-off a currently healthy part of her body. Everybody should be appalled at the prevailing paradigm of breast cancer detection and treatment. It is simply intolerable and we must move into new answers so, in the future, no woman has to make this terrible choice.
