I just started Topamax to stop the weight gain from Seroquel. I have only been on Seroquel for three weeks but in those three weeks I gained 14lb only around my stomic. currently it has been five days since I started Topamax and I'v lost all 14lb... YAY!!! I looked 4 months prago. Yes there are some side effects so far but I'm a tiny girl and that much weight gain... well was just to mush to handle. Thank You Topamax

I like many others have been afraid of the side effects. My neurologist prescribed this to me because of debilitating migraines, and me being obese said it would help with weight loss too. I was thinking yeah right. Right after the first dose I was looking in the fridge for something to eat before going to work and EVERYTHING repulsed me! I couldn't figure out why until I was like "the pills!"....It really does make you think food is the last thing you need..

I have been on Topamax for around 6 months for migraines, with the hopes of weight loss for my upcoming September wedding. I increased very slowly, starting at 25mg for a month or two at night then 50mg for another few months now just increased to 100 this week. I have lost 10 lbs. I do exercise because I am a dance teacher. I don't know if it because of my slow increase but I don't really notice much of a difference in my appetite other than the loss of it at night, and I don't know why I am just not losing it as quickly as everyone else. I am reading everyone's comments and it seems like some of you are just shedding weight in a few weeks! If anyone knows why or how I can speed this process along before the wedding I WOULD LOVE the advice. Other than some slight concentration issues here and there I have had no other side effects. Thanks <3

I was perscribed Topamax last Monday and have yet to take it because I am scared of all the side effects. Are any of them permanent? Or do they subside after the first couple of days....weeks? I was given 1 25mg at bedtime.

When I was on 25 mg at bedtime I had absolutely no side effects. That is a very small dosage. From what I have read and researched most people with such dramatic side effects were taking a very high dosage. I think it depends on your body. Every person reacts differently. Good thing is on such a small dose you can stop it quickly if it does start to bother you, unlike a heavier dose that you have to get off gradually.

Hope It helps a little.

does anyone know if you can drink occassionally while being prescribed topomax? I'm an occasional drinker, a couple beers or a couple glasses of wine once in awhilem maybe on the weekends or something, I take topamax now for meniers disease (inner ear imbalance disorder) that causes headaches. but I am always afraid to drink when taking any kind of meds. any advice would be great! the pharmacist said space the meds out at least 4-6 hours before or after the pill but i wanted to hear if anyone has ever actually tried it and if it is safe

I love my topamax...I feel like it saved my life! I started taking it 3 yrs ago for severe migraines, I take 150mg. Within the first 3 weeks I started dropping pounds like crazy! I lost 40 pounds in 5 months. My mom died last year from cancer, I got really down and the doc put me on effexor..ugghh!I gained 40 pounds in 3 months. I just came off of it and am eager to see what happens. As far as hair loss, thats a big issue for me. That side effect never went away! I have thick hair so my hairdresser thinks its a blessing!

I have been taking topamax for a year and a half initially and first for alcohol but so apprietiate the extra 20lb it helps me keep off. I still have an appitite and feel overall balaced. It takes away the mental obsession for alcohol and helps me cope. In the last two years I have had the same knee replaced twice so carrying any extra weight is not good. In the last several months the medication has changed form and I now am not getting the same benefits. I have spoken with the pharmasist and they claim they dont know why. This medication has been vital to my recovery, self esteem and physical health. I need to find out what has changed in this medication.

I'm 15 yrs old and my doctor put me on Topax just about 3-4 weeks ago for migranes and I have noticed my appetite decreasing, I'm not hungry til about 1-2pm and then I have no more hunger for the day, I have to force myself to eat dinner at about 5-6pm. Soda tastes flat. I haven't weighed myself, so I don't know if I'm loosing weight or not. I'm heavier, so its a plus that the side effect is weight loss. I'm a lot more tired and not as active as I was. Another thing I noticed since taking this was rapid mood swings (extended from being a teenager)

I"m about to go on Topomax as soon as I get off the drug that put almost 55lbs on me!! SEROQUEL!
Stay away from that drug if you can at all help it! I hope it helps me get back to my normal weight as this weight gain has caused more than just emotional pain.

I have been taking tapomax (for mirgaines) for 45 days now. started with 25mg for 7 day (taken at bed) now at 50 mg/day (taken at bed) my starting weight weight was 127 and I now weigh 123. I am 5 foot 5 inches tall. I am still getting migraines, but they are no where near as bad as they were before I started on topomax. I have also noticed loss of appitite, numbness/tingling in fingers and toes, loss for words... one day I couldn't for the life of me remember how to spell "guy" lol... I am hoping get dr approval to up the dosage to 100 mg/day to see how that will go.

I have been taking Topamax for migranes for 15 months now. The memory problems have gone away and the metallic taste has gone. I still get the hot tingling sensations in my extremities but the weight loss is a problem. The weight loss stopped after the 1st 8 months. Then I had a traumatic stress event in my life. Now I cannot stop loosing weight. I went from a size 12 to a 2 and I am still shrinking! I am not dieting nor am I exercising. I have an apt with my Dr who has been out on maternity leave for 3 months next week. I am hoping to get off this stuff and reverse this! I should be a size 8! I caution you all, I had read posts like this and thought that it couldn't happen to me. Please use caution using this medication.

Does anyone know at what point the initial weight loss slows down? I've been on this for about a week and lost about 8 pounds.

I am happy that I have finally found a drug that has so far prevented the migraines, but I am down to 15% body fat and am worried that my neurologist will take me off the drug if I lose too much weight.
