topamax & weight loss

I am back on Topamax AGAIN. Was on it for about 9 years at a lower dose the first several months. no weight loss. then the dreaded generic hit the market. I had to increase to 350 mg per day and it seemed that every refill I got a different shape a different color and along with that I also got many different side effects from each different one. For a couple years I dealt with it because the doctor kinda just blew me off every time I complained with my new (side effect)problem. Finally the pharmacy tech helped me research the scripts that had been filled for me, explaining that they get the generic med from different suppliers and each one uses different fillers and would/could be the cause of my illnesses and that I should ask my doctor to write for the brand mane only. After a long battle to get it approved I am on brand name and those issues are gone except the hair loss. That is a huge problem for me. Currently taking 15,000 mg of biotin and pre natal vitamin and is still a problem.

I have been suffering from migraine issues for a couple of years but hit a wall back in May and haven't worked since. Finally saw a neurologist and apparently I have the rarest form of migraine. I just started taking Topamax yesterday so I'm looking forward to any kind of relief and bonus weight loss. :) I really hope this is the answer to my prayers.

I have just started Topamax... I was on tergertol before... I had gained about 12 pounds in a month on the stuff. I have had a few seizures and they are not sure why but said they have to medicate... I was reading these posts and noticed that "yes my pop tasted like crap" ... I can afford to drop some weight but I am not sure this is the right way but don't want to go back on the tegertol....
How was weening off Tergertol, was it hard. Right now that is what I'm doing, weening off Tergertol, & starting Topamax.

I started 25mg per day 1 week ago and I've lost 8 lbs already. I agree with the post above that this may not be "healthy" weight loss, but bieng overweight isn't healthy either. If this gets me to a healthy weight, then so be it. So far so good!!
any side effects?

I started taking Topamax a week ago for migraines. the instructions are 25mg for the first week at bed time. 50mg the second week at bedtime. 25mg in morning and 50mg at bedtime the third week, and finally 50mg twice a day. the first 2 days I slept like a zombie. now I am plagued with insomnia. I have noticed my appetite and desire to eat is definitely decreasing and am experiencing slight tingling in my upper and lower extremities. Has anyone else experienced insomnia? and if so is it something that will pass or is it a long term effect? I must say it has definitely helped the migraines.

I wanted to add my voice to this thread. I started with topiramate (generic) 7 days ago for complex migraine. I am a lecturer and two days after starting 25mg at night I found myself not really knowing what I was doing in the middle of a lecture. Luckily my students were very understanding and thankfully the confusion and memory loss was only short term - I was back to normal a couple of days later. I have obviously got to titrate the dose, but am going to arrange this for weeks that I'm not teaching! So don't be put off if you get a bit muddled and flustered at the beginning.

I've just started with the appetite loss today, really do not want to eat anything, but am forcing myself to drink lots (to ward of dreaded kidney stones). I've just got to try and ensure I get some vitamins down my neck too!

Mary - do you think your breath issues might be ketosis - are you having appetite suppression issues too?

Plexus slim is great product line that incorporates a mixture of many natural ingredients, some which have been mentioned here. I use their products along with 25 mg topamax and have done very well . But its important to note: everyone is different and what works for me may not for you. I was looking into bariatric surgery but finally found something that works after spending lots of $$$$ and being very disappointed. Do research and even talk with more than 1 doctor before taking anything. We get only one body/life..... I'm 47 and doing my best to take better care of mine!:)
Sheri - which Plexus products do you take with the Topamax? I would like to still take the ProBio5 and BioCleanse, and I haven't been able to find anything about those items. I feel like since it's all natural, and since those two products aren't geared directly at weight loss like the Slim and Accelerator+, that I should be okay.

I'm on topomax, and I suggest u look for another route for weight loss like adapex. Topomax has some side effects and if u don't have severe migraines or seizures then u don't need to be on it. Ur doctor shouldn't be prescribing that medication for weight loss it has some serious side effects depending on the person taking I have memory problems, sometime difficulty in concentrating, sometimes its hard to say what I'm thinking because my speech will mess up. For some it will cause extreme mood swings. This med shouldn't be used for the wrong reasons. But I have heard that adipex helps w weight loss.

I've been on topamax for about a month now and I've only lost 4 lbs. I was taking 50mg at night but it was causing me severe insomnia which, for some reason, made me voracious. Sodas still taste okay and I am constantly thirsty, but mostly for savory liquids like beef broth or pho ga (minus noodles, meat, etc). My desire for carbs has also decreased significantly. I started taking my 50mg in the morning with my phentermine and didn't feel the need for an afternoon nap at all. Here's hoping the weightloss ramps up!

I was on topomax for about 1.5 years, and it was prescribed in addition to my pristiq and wellbutrin. I had gained 30 lbs on Prozac and zyprexa, and on my tiny little 5'0" frame, I was at 140 lbs, and more miserable than i tad ever been.
The first two weeks i literally could not eat anything, and lost about 5-6 lbs. Ok, pretty good. But then I noticed that I couldn't speak, I had HIGH social anxiety (i was the most social person to know prior til then), and couldn't do simple math problems. I couldn't think straight. I figured it would pass.
It didn't
Plus I became hungry again and was eating everything in sight.
I didn't rain back the 6 lbs, and was losing very slowly bc i was constantly eating.
If I had dieted just a little, the weight fell off.
Then I noticed an alarmingly large mass of hair come out in the shower one day.
I didn't want to believe that I had just lost all that hair.
But I did.
Eventually, i reduced dose (i was up to 100 mg twice a day!) and within two days of decreasing the dose i noticed a difference in my mental clarity.
This stuff is poison for your brain.
But it was VERY easy to keep weight at bay, too.
Right now, I'm heavy. About 120. I need to lose or else I'll never leave my house. I'm getting phentermine tomorrow, and I WILL be starting back at 25 mg of topomax along with it for weight loss only.
I won't do any more than that
